Book Synopsis An Introduction to Transnational Criminal Law by : Neil Boister
Download or read book An Introduction to Transnational Criminal Law written by Neil Boister and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National borders are permeable to all types of illicit action and contraband goods, whether it is trafficking humans, body parts, digital information, drugs, weapons, or money. Whilst criminals exist in a borderless world where territorial boundaries allow them to manipulate different markets in illicit goods, the authorities who pursue them can remain constrained inside their own jurisdictions. In a new edition of his ground-breaking work, Boister examines how states must cooperate to tackle some of the greatest security threats in this century so far, analyses to what extent vested interests have determined the course of global policy and law enforcement, and illustrates how responding to transnational crime itself becomes a form of international relations which reorders global political power and becomes, at least in part, an end in itself. Arguing that transnational criminal law is currently geared towards suppressing criminal activity, but is not as committed to ensuring justice, Boister suggests that it might be more strongly influenced by individual moral panics and a desire for criminal retribution than an interest in ensuring a proportional response to offences, protection of human rights, and the preservation of the rule of law.

Book Synopsis The Long Arm of Moore's Law by : Cyrus C. M. Mody
Download or read book The Long Arm of Moore's Law written by Cyrus C. M. Mody and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-12-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How, beginning in the mid 1960s, the US semiconductor industry helped shape changes in American science, including a new orientation to the short-term and the commercial. Since the mid 1960s, American science has undergone significant changes in the way it is organized, funded, and practiced. These changes include the decline of basic research by corporations; a new orientation toward the short-term and the commercial, with pressure on universities and government labs to participate in the market; and the promotion of interdisciplinarity. In this book, Cyrus Mody argues that the changes in American science that began in the 1960s co-evolved with and were shaped by the needs of the “civilianized” US semiconductor industry. In 1965, Gordon Moore declared that the most profitable number of circuit components that can be crammed on a single silicon chip doubles every year. Mody views “Moore's Law” less as prediction than as self-fulfilling prophecy, pointing to the enormous investments of capital, people, and institutions the semiconductor industry required—the “long arm” of Moore's Law that helped shape all of science. Mody offers a series of case studies in microelectronics that illustrate the reach of Moore's Law. He describes the pressures on Stanford University's electrical engineers during the Vietnam era, IBM's exploration of alternatives to semiconductor technology, the emergence of consortia to integrate research across disciplines and universities, and the interwoven development of the the molecular electronics community and associated academic institutions as the vision of a molecular computer informed the restructuring of research programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth and up-to-date review of bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a broadly heterogenous disease with a variety of etiologies and disease phenotypes and endotypes. To comprehensively and adequately address bronchiectasis, all these aspects need to be considered, which is not always the case in the current literature. Throughout this book, expert authors discuss the epidemiology, etiology, clinical management and clinical trials to give the reader greater context and tools to care for their patients. Chapters include coverage of environmental and infectious causes of bronchiectasis, radiographic phenotyping, diagnosing, and monitoring of bronchiectatic diseases, and host directed therapy. This is an ideal guide for pulmonologists and trainees caring for patients with bronchiectasis.
