It was a pivotal occasion: spectral techniques for wave measurement were beginning to be used, wave-wave interactions hadjust been discovered, and simple models for the growth of waves by wind were being developed. The meeting laid the foundation for much work that was to follow, but one could hardly have imagined the extent to which new techniques of measurement, particularly by remote sensing, new methods of calculation and computation, and new theoretical and laboratory results would, in the following twenty years, build on this base. When Gaspar Valenzuela of the V. S. Naval Research Laboratory perceived that the time was right for a second such meeting, it was natural that Sir George Deacon would be invited to serve as honorary chairman for the meeting, and the entire waves community was delighted at his acceptance. The present volume contains reviewed and edited papers given at this second meeting, held this time in Miami, Florida, May 13-20, 1981, with the generous support of the Office of Naval Research, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Many of the most interesting problems are tied to the loss of stability which is realized in preferential positioning and shaping of the interface, so that interfacial stability is a major player in this drama. Typically, solutions of equations governing the dynamics of two fluids are not uniquely determined by the boundary data and different configurations of flow are compatible with the same data. This is one reason why stability studies are important; we need to know which of the possible solutions are stable to predict what might be observed. When we started our studies in the early 1980's, it was not at all evident that stability theory could actu ally work in the hostile environment of pervasive nonuniqueness. We were pleasantly surprised, even astounded, by the extent to which it does work. There are many simple solutions, called basic flows, which are never stable, but we may always compute growth rates and determine the wavelength and frequency of the unstable mode which grows the fastest. This proce dure appears to work well even in deeply nonlinear regimes where linear theory is not strictly valid, just as Lord Rayleigh showed long ago in his calculation of the size of drops resulting from capillary-induced pinch-off of an inviscid jet.

Two-layer models can capture the main density-dependent effects because they can support, unlike homogeneous fluid models, the observed large amplitude internal wave motion at the interface between layers. The authors have derived new model equations using multiscale asymptotics in combination with the method they have developed for vertically averaging velocity and vorticity fields across fluid layers within the original Euler equations. The authors have found new exact conservation laws for layer-mean vorticity that have exact counterparts in the models. With this approach, they have derived a class of equations that retain the full nonlinearity of the original Euler equations while preserving the simplicity of known weakly nonlinear models, thus providing the theoretical foundation for experimental results so far unexplained.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to study a problem modelling steady water-waves generated by an obstacle in an N-layer fluid. As in the classical one-layer Neumann-Kelvin problem, our model is a linearized version of the steady-free surface multi-layer Euler equations around a rest state, where we end-up with an elliptic problem involving interface conditions. We start by considering the Neuman-Kelvin problem treating a single-layer flow over an obstacle lying on the physical domain's bottom. We investigate the problem both by the variational and Fourier method. We distinguish between the subcritical and supercritical cases, meaning when the flow prescribed velocity upstream at infinity is less or larger than the wave velocity. Numerical simulations illustrate the subcritical and supercritical cases. The wave resistance is also computed, and waveless obstacles are obtained in the subcritical case. Chapter 2 generalizes our result from the single-layer case by considering the velocity at upstream infinity as varying, more precisely as a simple step function. As we explain later on, the interest of this case is that it represents the first step into the treatment, at least numerically, of the nonlinear problem. This context allows the flow to present certain zones where it is supercritical and others where it is subcritical. We call this case a transcritical flow. As in the single-layer, the treatment of the supercritical regime is immediate, as the variational solution is smoother than just ”finite energy” and is hence the unique solution to the initial problem. However, the case of a transcritical flow needs handling with more care, and we consider here only one of the two possible transcritical situations. The variational solution obtained in the transcritical case will not be a solution to the initial problem since it fails to satisfy the harmonicity condition. The regularization procedure needs to be carried out to correct the variational solution and obtain the original problem's solution. In Chapter 3, we study a stratified layer case by considering a two-layer flow with rigid lid approximation at the free surface. We treat the problem both by the variational and Fourier transform method. Using the variational method, we can prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution. The Fourier method allows us to explicitly determine the variational and the wake part of the solution. We also prove that in the presence of a rigid lid, when the upper layer's density is zero, the interface between the layers behaves precisely as the free surface for the one-layer case and this result will also be recovered in a more general setting in the next section. Numerical simulations complete these results. Finally in Chapter 4, we concentrate on developing a qualitative theory for multi-layered fluids. We first establish a general theory that could apply to various stationary linear models when the Fourier method is used. Thus, studying different possible cases related to the existence and multiplicity of real roots for the dispersion relation gives a general treatment for the problem. We then apply this theory to the N-layer case with rigid lid and obtain the exact solution for each layer. We also consider the three-layer case with rigid lid, when the density of the upper layer is zero, and we compare the solution at the interfaces with the two-layer case with the free surface. Numerical simulations for the two-layer case with free surface illustrate the fluid dynamics for each layer, for the cases when the dispersion relation presents no roots, only one real root or two distinct real roots. For the cases when the dispersion relation presents one or two real roots, and thus the solution is oscillating downstream, we can also construct wakeless obstacles.

The fluid is density-stratified and the thicknesses of the top and bottom layers are both assumed to be shallow relative to the length of a typical surface wave and interfacial wave, respectively. A set of Boussinesq-type equations are derived for potential flow in this system. The equations are then analyzed for the dynamics of the nonlinear resonant interactions between a monochromatic surface wave and two oblique interfacial waves. The analysis uses a second order perturbation approach. Consequently, a set of coupled transient evolution equations of wave amplitudes is derived. Moreover, the effect of weak viscosity of the lower layer is incorporated in the problem and the influences of important parameters on surface and interfacial wave evolution (namely the directional angle of interfacial waves, density ratio of the layers, thickness of the fluid layers, surface wave frequency, surface wave amplitude, and lower layer viscosity) are investigated. The results of the parametric study are discussed and are generally in qualitative agreement with previous studies. In shallow water, a triad formed of surface waves (or interfacial waves) can be considered in near-resonant interaction. In contrast to the previous studies which limited the study to a triad (one surface wave and two interfacial waves or one interfacial and two surface waves), the problem is generalized by considering the nonlinear interactions between a triad of surface waves and three oblique pairs of interfacial waves. In this system, each surface wave is in near-resonance interaction with other surface waves and in exact resonance with a pair of oblique interfacial waves. Similarly, each interfacial wave is in near-resonance interaction with other interfacial waves which are propagating in the same direction. Inclusion of all the interactions considerably changes the pattern of evolution of waves and highlights the necessity of accounting for several wave harmonics. Effects of density ratio, depth ratio, and surface wave frequency on the evolution of waves are discussed. Finally, a formulation is derived for spatial evolution of one surface wave spectrum in nonlinear interaction with two oblique interfacial wave spectra. The two-layer Boussinesq-type equations are treated in frequency domain to study the nonlinear interactions of time-harmonic waves. Based on weakly two-dimensional propagation of each wave train, a parabolic approximation is applied to derive the formulation.

The first deals with symmetry breaking in a liquid layer flowing down an inclined plane. The second problem concerns the equilibrium and symmetry breaking of interfacial polygonal patterns generated by a system of vortices arranged on a circular ring. The first problem dates back to Nusselt (1916) who obtained the solution for the basic flow. Since then, thin layers of liquid falling down inclined plane continues to be the subject of extensive studies for both their practical applications and theoretical value. In this thesis, the problem is approached analytically. Three new mathematical models are proposed. The first two involve three and four equations respectively. These produce linear stability results that agree fairly with past experimental outcomes and results obtained with similar models. For a deeper and qualitative analysis a lower dimension model that retains the physics is needed. Hence, a two-equation model (involving only two fundamental flow parameters namely the film thickness and flow rate) is derived. The new model taking account of the shear stress at the free surface is shown to be superior to the existing two-equation model of Usha and Uma in Phys Fluid (2004). The influence of electrical and magnetic fields on the stability of falling film of an electrically conductor fluid is also investigated. In comparison with the model of Korsunsky ( Eur.J.F.M.1999 ) for higher Reynolds numbers. The proposed model takes account of the inertia terms, which are of second order with respect to a small parameter namely the long wave parameter. As shown through the chapter four of the part one, the proposed two-equation model improves significantly Korsunsky's model. The second problem dates back to Kelvin (1867) who hypothesized atoms to be point vortices arranged in circular ring forming symmetrical polygonal patterns. Although, the atomic vortex model is long abandoned, the problem of system of point vortices has become of great interest in superfluidity and by analogy in plasma physics. Moreover, polygonal patterns, which are the signature of the presence of vortices, equally distributed in) rings were also observed in several engineering problems and geophysical flows in nature. In fluid dynamics, polygonal patterns become clearly visible in swirling flows where the vortex core is hollow. The empty core can eventually support polygonal shapes (up to hexagonal). The first experimental report on the phenomenon was by Vatistas in 1990. In this thesis the phenomenon is revisited using image-processing technique that allows a deeper and more precise investigation. The dynamics of the patterns is investigated and for the first time the transition from one pattern to another is explored in detail. The stability condition for a system of point vortices on circular ring derived first by J.J Thomson (1897) and generalized later by Havelock (1931) for N point vortices including the influence of circular boundaries surrounding the equilibrium is confirmed. Frequency locking between the pattern and the disk frequencies which are suspected in the previous experiments is established and quantified. Moreover, the transition from the elliptical to the hexagonal pattern is found that it follows a "devil's staircase" scenario. Due to the similarity between the problem under the scope and other fields of physics, the present experimental results are anticipated to go beyond the field of fluid mechanics.
