Book excerpt: With one of her quick changes of mood she rose, patted her hair smooth, caught up a wrap oddly inharmonious with the gown and slippers, looped her train over her arm, took her violin, and ran lightly down-stairs. The parlor, the dining room, the kitchen were deserted and the lights turned low. She braced herself mentally, and, flushing at the unaccustomed act, rapped timidly upon the door which opened into the office--which by that time she knew was really a saloon. Hawley himself opened the door, and in his eyes bulged at sight of her.

Book excerpt: In his square-sterned canoe, Alaskan author Dan O'Neill set off from Dawson, Yukon Territory, onetime site of the Klondike gold rush, to trace the majestic Yukon River. His journey downriver to Circle City, Alaska, is an expedition into the history of the river and its land, and a record of the inimitable and little known inhabitants of the region. With the distinct perspective of an insider, A Land Gone Lonesome gives us an intelligent, rhapsodic-and ultimately, probably the last-portrait of the Yukon and its authentic inhabitants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his square-sterned canoe, Alaskan author Dan O'Neill set off down the majestic Yukon River, beginning at Dawson, Yukon Territory, site of the Klondike gold rush. The journey he makes to Circle City, Alaska, is more than a voyage into northern wilderness, it is an expedition into the history of the river and a record of the inimitable inhabitants of the region, historic and contemporary. A literary kin of John Muir's Travels in Alaska and John McPhee's Coming into the Country, A Land Gone Lonesome is the book on Alaska for the new century. Though he treks through a beautiful and hostile wilderness, the heart of O'Neill's story is his exploration of the lives of a few tough souls clinging to the old ways-even as government policies are extinguishing their way of life. More than just colorful anachronisms, these wilderness dwellers-both men and women-are a living archive of North American pioneer values. As O'Neill encounters these natives, he finds himself drawn into the bare-knuckle melodrama of frontier life-and further back still into the very origins of the Yukon river world. With the rare perspective of an insider, O'Neill here gives us an intelligent, lyrical-and ultimately, probably the last-portrait of the river people along the upper Yukon.

Book excerpt: Lonesome Land by B. M. Bower Valeria had come to Montana to marry a cowboy named Manley, expecting a future full of companionship and invigorating freedom, lodges with large fireplaces and bearskin rugs, manageable cattle and elegant horses and dazzling sunrises. If Val had known what she really was waiting for, she just wouldn't have gotten off the train. Oh, the country was impressive, but it could be cruel in the winter and lonely for a woman stranded on a ranch miles from the nearest neighbor. Val is thrown into circumstances that test her character, strength and sanity. Married to an alcoholic, she is forced to revise her back-East notions of men and women, duty and the West itself. She goes from romanticization to "blind and unreasonable terror of the desert land" to decisive action.

Book excerpt: When does a boy become a man? When does he cross that invisible line where marbles and tops and playlike don’t matter anymore? Is it when he begins to imagine what it would be like to wake up next to the girl that lives inside his soul? Is it when he buries his best friend wearin’ a coat still stained with that friend’s blood? Is it when he knows in his heart of hearts he could kill a man and not even think twice about it? These are the questions that rage in young Crawford Cashion’s mind as he rides to his destiny in the turbulent years of the Range Wars in southwest Texas. Though the country has turned a page with a new century, the Old West still lingers on, and so does the prairie. People may change. Attitudes and philosophies come and go, but the prairie—the HIGH LONESOME—will always stay the same—unforgiving of weakness, immutable and severe.

Book excerpt: In northern Montana there lies a great, lonely stretch of prairie land, gashed deep where flows the Missouri. Indeed, there are many such-big, impassive, impressive in their very loneliness, in summer given over to the winds and the meadow larks and to the shadows fleeing always over the hilltops. Wild range cattle feed there and grow sleek and fat for the fall shipping of beef. At night the coyotes yap quaveringly and prowl abroad after the long-eared jack rabbits, which bounce away at their hunger-driven approach. In winter it is not good to be there; even the beasts shrink then from the bleak, level reaches, and shun the still bleaker heights. But men will live anywhere if by so doing there is money to be gained, and so a town snuggled up against the northern rim of the bench land, where the bleakness was softened a bit by the sheltering hills, and a willow-fringed creek with wild rosebushes and chokecherries made a vivid green background for the meager huddle of little, unpainted buildings.
