Book Synopsis The Solitary Sphere in the Age of Virgil by : Aaron J. Kachuck
Download or read book The Solitary Sphere in the Age of Virgil written by Aaron J. Kachuck and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Solitary Sphere in the Age of Virgil uses an enriched tripartite model of Roman culture-touching not only the public and the private, but also the solitary-in order to present a radical re-interpretation of Latin literature and of the historical causes of this third sphere's relative invisibility in scholarship. By connecting Cosmos and Imperium to the Individual, the solitary sphere was not so much a way of avoiding politics, as a political education in itself. As re-imagined by literature in this age literature, this sphere was an essential space for the formation of the new Roman citizen of the Augustan revolution, and was behind many of the notable features of the literary revolution of Virgil's age: the expansion of the possibilities of the book of poetry, the birth of the literary cursus, new coordinations of cosmology and politics within strictly organized schemes, the attraction of first-person genres, and the subjective style. Through close readings of Cicero's late works and the oeuvres of Virgil, Horace, and Propertius and the works of other authors in the age of Virgil, The Solitary Sphere thus presents a revelatory reassessment of the classicism of classical Roman literature, and contributes to the study of pre-modern culture more generally, especially for traditions that have taken antiquity as too fixed a point in their own literary, religious, and cultural histories.
Download or read book Pelican Watch written by Rose Senehi and published by Ingalls Publishing Group. This book was released on 2007 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicky Sullivan nurses injured animals...but now she's going to heal herself. She flees to a South Carolina barrier island and discovers a kindred spirit in Mac Moultrie, a salty retired fisherman. They ease into a leisure routine of shrimping in the marshlands--unaware of a murder committed to snatch old slave lands from a young black woman. From the moment Nicky lays eyes on Trippett Alston, she's smitten. This Southern gentleman, however, is more interested in fighting off the condominium development threatening his beloved island and its turtle nesting grounds than in the forlorn Yankee artist. Pelican Watch is a tender love story told against a backdrop of murder and suspense, laced with the flavor of South Carolina's lush low country and the unforgettable people who work to preserve it.

Download or read book Sidetracks written by Bei Dao and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical masterpiece by the renowned poet with a “Whitman-like rhetorical immensity coupled with a passionately eccentric sensibility” (Carol Muske Dukes, Los Angeles Times) Sidetracks, Bei Dao’s first new collection in almost fifteen years, is also the poet’s first long poem and his magnum opus—the artistic culmination of a lifetime devoted to the renewal and reinvention of language. “As a poet, I am always lost,” Bei Dao once said. Opening with a prologue of heavenly questions and followed by thirty-four cantos, Sidetracks travels forward and backward along the divergent paths of the poet’s wandering life—from his time as a Young Pioneer in Beijing, through the years of exile living in six countries, back to the rural construction site where he worked during the Cultural Revolution, to the “sunshine tablecloth” in his kitchen in Davis, California, and his emotional visit home after a thirteen-year separation (“the mother tongue has deepened my foreignness”). All the various currents of our times rush into his lifelines, reconfigured through the “vortex of experience” and the poet’s encounters with friends and strangers, artists and ghosts, as he moves from place to place, unable to return home. As the poet Michael Palmer has noted, “Bei Dao’s work, in its rapid transitions, abrupt juxtapositions, and frequent recurrence to open syntax evokes the un-speakability of the exile’s condition. It is a poetry of explosive convergences, of submersions and unfixed boundaries, ‘amid languages.’”
