Book excerpt: One tough rancher-girl plus one hot cowboy adds up to trouble. Kiersten Day hates all things Texan – including and especially one CJ Howell. The cattle rancher gone real estate mogul has set his sights on her tiny Colorado ranch, trying every dirty trick in the book to make her sell. When his manager stoops to threatening her, Kiersten prepares for the fight of her life. Enter Cleve: tall, handsome good-guy, who she falls flat on her Texas-hating face for. The problem? Cleve is Howell’s son, and doesn’t believe his father is behind all the sinister things happening to her. How could he be the offspring of the monster she’s been battling? Cleve never imagined love could be so complicated. Of all the girls he could fall for, it had to be one bent on hating men. Kiersten is the only person who’s ever stood up to his father’s Texan guerrilla business tactics—and won! She’s possibly pregnant, oblivious to her best friend mooning over her, determined to keep the family ranch despite increasing threats, and the prettiest little thing he’s laid eyes on. It just couldn’t be easy, could it? Content warning: a hot cowboy, an overprotective grandpa, a meddling BFF with his own love-life troubles, a woman set to win the battle no matter the cost, and frequent use of cowboy four-letter “French” words.

Book excerpt: Lone Star Muslims offers an engaging and insightful look at contemporary Muslim American life in Texas. It illuminates the dynamics of the Pakistani Muslim community in Houston, a city with one of the largest Muslim populations in the south and southwestern United States. Drawing on interviews and participant observation at radio stations, festivals, and ethnic businesses, the volume explores everyday Muslim lives at the intersection of race, class, profession, gender, sexuality, and religious sectarian affiliation to demonstrate the complexity of the South Asian experience. Importantly, the volume incorporates narratives of gay Muslim American men of Pakistani descent, countering the presumed heteronormativity evident in most of the social science scholarship on Muslim Americans and revealing deeply felt affiliations to Islam through ritual and practice. It also includes narratives of members of the highly skilled Shia Ismaili Muslim labor force employed in corporate America, of Pakistani ethnic entrepreneurs, the working class and the working poor employed in Pakistani ethnic businesses, of community activists, and of radio program hosts. Decentering dominant framings that flatten understandings of transnational Islam and Muslim Americans, such as “terrorist” on the one hand, and “model minority” on the other, Lone Star Muslims offers a glimpse into a variety of lived experiences. It shows how specificities of class, Islamic sectarian affiliation, citizenship status, gender, and sexuality shape transnational identities and mediate racism, marginalities, and abjection.

Spirit of the Border is a historical novel. It is based on events occurring in the Ohio River Valley in the late eighteenth century. It features the exploits of Lewis Wetzel, a historical personage who had dedicated his life to the destruction of Native Americans and to the protection of nascent white settlements in that region. Riders of the Purple Sage is a Western Classic. Considered by many critics to have played a significant role in shaping the formula of the popular Western genre, the novel has been called "the most popular western novel of all time." The Rainbow Trail, also known as The Desert Crucible, is a sequel to Riders of the Purple Sage. The novel takes place ten years after events of Riders of the Purple Sage. The Lone Star Ranger is a Western novel that takes place in Texas, the Lone Star State, and several main characters are Texas Rangers, a famous band of highly capable law enforcement officers. It follows the life of Buck Duane, a man who becomes an outlaw and then redeems himself in the eyes of the law. The Border Legion tells the story of a cold hearted man named Jack Kells who falls in love with Miss Joan Randle, a girl his legion has taken captive near the Idaho border. Zane Grey (1872-1939) was an American author best known for his popular adventure novels and stories that were a basis for the Western genre in literature and the arts. With his veracity and emotional intensity, he connected with millions of readers worldwide, during peacetime and war, and inspired many Western writers who followed him. Book excerpt: Howard Seely's books about Texas ranch life read as well today as they did when first published in the 19th century. Though not a Texan, Seely spent a lot of time there and captures the language and culture of the place with remarkable fidelity. The New York Times wrote of him: “Mr. Seely is not native to Texas, at least not to a Texas ranch. He is college-bred [Yale] and through his writings runs constant evidence of his Eastern culture. But he has deep sympathy with ranch life, and this sympathy the reader feels to be something more than the sympathy that is natural to a studious observer of manners and customs. Beneath the outer aspects of men as trained to the saddle and armed with ‘shooting irons,’ he sees the human nature that dominates and inspires every incident of daily life.” Seely's fiction was popular in its day and is now available for a new audience in ebook format. Book excerpt: In-the-know columnist Maggie Riley had a mission in mind: to write a scathing expos about a scam artist at an overpriced retreat. Seducing a woman out of house and home was a crime! But fate, and a pair of ill-fitting shoes, landed her against the hard chest of lawman Ben Hunter, who had his own ulterior motives. In such a confined space, their previous agendas were long forgotten as they flashed hot, sultry gazes at each other. Maggie couldn't resist Ben's brooding eyes--not to mention how he filled a pair of jeans. Keeping their hands to themselves was pure torture! Would stubborn pride stand in the way of their blossoming love...and a lifetime of wicked fun?

Book excerpt: Art Since the ’80s, a new series from Reaktion Books, seeks to offer compelling surveys of popular themes in contemporary art. In the first book in the series, Gill Perry reveals how the house and the idea of home have inspired a range of imaginative and playful works by artists across the globe. Exploring how artists have engaged with this theme in different contexts—from mobile homes and beach houses to haunted houses and broken homes—Playing at Home shows that our relationship with houses involves complex responses in which gender, race, class, and status overlap, and that through these relationships we turn a house into a home. Perry looks at the works of numerous artists, including Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, Michael Landy, Mike Kelley, and Peter Garfield, as well as the work of artists who travel across continents and see home as a shifting notion, such as Do-Ho-Suh and Song Dong. She also engages with the work of philosophers and cultural theorists from Walter Benjamin and Gaston Bachelard to Johan Huizinga and Henri Lefebvre, who inform our understanding of living and dwelling. Ultimately, she argues that irony, parody, and play are equally important in our interpretations of these works on the home. With over one hundred images, Playing at Home covers a wide range of art and media in a fascinating look at why there’s no place like home.
