Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating biography of veteran Marine Corps officer Colonel John W. Thomason, dedicated soldier and talented artist. “On a spring morning in 1917, in fact the very day the United States declared war on Germany, a twenty-four-year-old Texan strode into the recruiting office of the Marine Corps branch of the Texas Naval Militia at Houston, and let it be known somewhat emphatically to authority there present that he desired to enlist. They assigned him to Company A, 1st Texas Battalion of Marines, and the same day they packed him off on the first train through town bound for New Orleans. “Within a month’s time he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and for the ensuing twenty-seven years he was to devote his life to that branch of the naval service. During those years he served within the continental limits of the United States, in France and Germany, aboard ship and ashore in the Caribbean, in Cuba, in certain of the Central American Republics, in the Orient, and briefly in the South Pacific. “This newly-commissioned young officer, John William Thomason, Jr., of Huntsville, Texas, brought with him into the Marine Corps a variety of skills and talents. Throughout his service career he was to continue to employ his unusual abilities and to develop them and to contribute materially not only to the betterment of his Corps but also to his fellow comrades. He was unique in a service where uniqueness is not unknown but rather wherein individuality is encouraged for the common good. His record in combat as well as in the administrative field was outstanding in a military organization long known to demand perfection as a matter of course. And at his death in 1944, it would appear he left the artistic, the literary, and the military worlds far wealthier than he had found them.”

Book excerpt: Every year in the Texas Legislature, the first bill brought up for consideration is one to secede from the Union. It has always been ceremonial. However, on March 1, 2022, Texas State Senator John Lucas IV, changes all of that with these words: "When the President, Supreme Court and Congress took office they took one oath - that oath was not to devalue our currency by taking us off of the gold standard. It was not to invade our privacy by allowing the NSA to read our emails. It was not to go to war with nations that were not a threat to us. That oath was to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. They have broken that oath. Therefore today, we, the sovereign people of the state of Texas, declare ourselves a free and independent nation." The story begins almost 30 years ago at the federal government's siege in Waco, TX against David Koresh and his Branch Davidians. Dylan Thomas and Carson Bradley are among three Navy Seals covertly called in to neutralize the situation. It goes tragically wrong as one of the Seals dies and Carson barely survives with severe burns throughout his body and a burning resentment towards the federal government. Fast forwarding to today, Carson and Dylan devise a plan to ignite the fight for Texas' independence. They go to John Lucas, IV, a complex Texas State Senator, rancher, and family man who has always opposed abortion. Even more so since his once wayward, sister, Sarah had one while in college. He agrees to push the bill and guide its successful passage. It culminates with a standoff in Houston, TX to close the nation's largest Planned Parenthood facility. The President sends in the Marines to halt the closure and the battle lines are drawn! What starts out as a battle over abortion explodes into a fight for Independence!
Download or read book Lone Star Valor written by Joe Owen and published by Gettysburg Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of soldiers who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg for both the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia settled in Texas after the Civil War. Throughout the days, weeks, and years after the battle, these soldiers captured their stories in diary entries, letters, interviews, and newspaper articles. From the first crossing of the Potomac River to the intense fighting on July 1, July 2, and ultimately at Pickett’s Charge on July 3, these Texans of the Blue and the Gray played a key role in the Gettysburg Campaign. This collection of soldiers' accounts written during, and after, the war provides a unique perspective from Texans in the ranks over the course of those historic days in the summer of 1863. Also included are the stories of civilians who bore witness to the tremendous battle and who settled in Texas after the Civil War. Articles are transcribed as they were originally published; personal reminiscences are transcribed directly from letters and diaries. Collected for the first time in a single volume, this is essential reference for historians of the Lone Star State and Civil War researchers.

Book excerpt: "Alan Weisman has come as close as anyone to unraveling one of the big mysteries of the television age: who is the real Dan Rather? Weisman has devoted much time, energy, and talent to that question, and this book is a fascinating read." --Robert Pierpoint, former CBS News correspondent "There is no career in modern television journalism that is more fascinating, complicated, controversial, or accomplished than that of Dan Rather, and there is no one who has focused the attention of colleagues, TV writers, competitors, and, of course, critics to a similar degree over the last twenty-five years. Alan Weisman's lively account of this remarkable life explains why the quest to understand Rather has remained so vital and important." --Verne Gay, television critic, Newsday "This book is an attempt to take a few steps back from Memogate and examine the whole picture -- the scope and breadth of Dan Rather's life, career, and times. If he mattered enough to be watched by untold millions of people for fifty years on television, then his story matters enough to be told as fully as possible." --From Lone Star: The Extraordinary Life and Times of Dan Rather
