Book excerpt: This is a new edition of John Leonard's popular London's Parish Churches, first published in 1997. With over 200 new colour photographs by the author, it provides both an historical account of churches in the capital from Anglo-Saxon beginnings to the dawn of the twenty-first century and also an invaluable guide to over 120 of the finest parish churches. London contains a high proportion of the greatest post-Reformation churches in the country and all the surviving medieval and Wren churches in the City of London are here with plans of many by Wren and Hawksmoor. The book concludes with a generous selection of the best modern churches. John Leonard, a Londoner by birth, is a retired consultant physician from Manchester who has written widely about parish churches.

Book Synopsis The Temple Church in London by : Robin Griffith-Jones
Download or read book The Temple Church in London written by Robin Griffith-Jones and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as the main church of the Knights Templar in England, at their New Temple in London, the Temple Church is historically and architecturally one of the most important medieval buildings in England. Its round nave, modelled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is extraordinarily ambitious, combining lavish Romanesque sculpture with some of the earliest Gothic architectural features in any English building of its period. It holds one of the most famous series of medieval effigies in the country. The luminous thirteenth-century choir, intended for the burial of Henry III, is of exceptional beauty. Major developments in the post-medieval period include the reordering of the church in the 1680s by Sir Christopher Wren, and a substantial restoration programme in the early 1840s. Despite its extraordinary importance, however, it has until now attracted little scholarly or critical attention, a gap which is remedied by this volume. It considers the New Temple as a whole in the middle ages, and all aspects of the church itself from its foundation in the twelfth century to its war-time damage in the twentieth. Richly illustrated with numerous black and white and colour plates, it makes full use of the exceptional range and quality of the antiquarian material available for study, including drawings, photographs, and plaster casts. Contributors: Robin Griffith-Jones, Virginia Jansen, Philip Lankester, Helen Nicholson, David Park, Rosemary Sweet, William Whyte, Christopher Wilson.

Download or read book Catholic Churches of London written by Denis Evinson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive survey of London's Catholic churches, Dr Evinson's inventory lists all 140 churches in the cities of London, Westminster and the inner surrounding boroughs. In each case the entries include the foundation of the mission, the building history of the church, the role of the clergy and lay patrons, an architectural description and an account of the church's permanent furnishings. A substantial introduction treats the subject in chronological terms, embracing the period of Catholic emancipation followed by the Gothic, Classical, Byzantine and Romanesque revivals. Post-1945 developments in structure and planning are also explored, followed by a survey of furnishings and artists. This book should appeal to Catholic Londoners and parish priests, as well as art historians and tourists.
