Book excerpt: While shopping in a Virginia suburb, First Lady Kathleen Maguire is accosted by a man she knew years ago in Belfast. Taken to a remote location, she is invited to participate in secret peace talks designed to help bring peace to Northern Ireland. Over the objections of the Director of the FBI and others, President Kellan Maguire agrees to allow his wife to proceed to Derry to participate in the talks. The group is to include the prime ministers of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, but an assassination attempt on the former disrupts the proceedings. Back in the United States, the president's motives are questioned, and he soon faces impeachment charges for allowing his wife to participate in the secret mission. Once again Kathleen Maguire becomes the focal point of controversy, and it is her testimony before Congress that will determine the results of the investigation.
Book Synopsis Letters of John Buddle to Lord Londonderry by : John Buddle
Download or read book Letters of John Buddle to Lord Londonderry written by John Buddle and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2013 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters between a colliery manager and his employer provide valuable evidence for the growth and development of the coal trade in north-east England. John Buddle (1773-1843), the most eminent coal viewer and mining engineer and manager of his day, worked for a number of different coal owners in North-East England. In particular, for over twenty years he acted as colliery manager for Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry. In this capacity Buddle wrote to his employer more than 2,000 letters, of which this book provides a selection. They give not only a detailed, and at times almost a day-to-day account of the coal trade of the Tyne and Wear at a time when the industry was expanding rapidly, but also a discussion of Lord Londonderry's always difficult financial affairs, of his local political activities, and the general condition of the region in a period of change. Buddle emerges from these letters as a self-confident professional man with far-reaching ideas tempered by prudence, ready to speak his mind and by no means always agreeing with his aristocratic employer, though ultimately always bowing to his decisions; Londonderry is revealed as ambitious, willful, and incapable of living within his means. The letters reveal the sometimes troubled relationship between the twovery different men, one that came close to breaking-point in 1841, though the breach was repaired before Buddle's death in 1843; more widely, they paint a vivid picture of north-east England in the early nineteenth century, of its politics, its economy, and its social situation at a time of lively development. Anne Orde is a retired Senior Lecturer in History, University of Durham.
Book Synopsis The Marquess of Londonderry by : N.C. Fleming
Download or read book The Marquess of Londonderry written by N.C. Fleming and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the seventh Marquess of Londonderry has long been a divisive figure in British aristocratic history. Was he an anti-Semitic Nazi sympathizer, as some have argued, or a visionary who should be remembered in glory for his role in the creation of RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes during World War II? In the paperback edition of Lord Londonderry, N.C Fleming answers this question and more. This updated edition draws extensively from private Londonderry family papers and state papers, as well as existing secondary literature, to provide an illuminating biography of Londonderry. This book has been updated with additional primary source research to reveal details about Londonderry House, Londonderry's travels and his radical right-wing beliefs as well as his infamous anti-Semitism. Lord Londonderry examines his disastrous diplomatic visits during the war, which seriously damaged his credibility at home, alongside his achievements in the Royal Air force to provide a comprehensive biography of the Marquess. Fleming also studies the tumultuous period of aristocratic decline set against a backdrop of growing calls for social equality, to show how this Conservative MP held onto his power in the changing social climate of post-war Britain. Here, Fleming has revised and updated his biography of Lord Londonderry to remove the shadow that Londonderry's association with Nazi Germany has cast over his career. In doing so, he provides an analysis of private family papers while also providing an extensive case study into the historiography of aristocracy.

Book Synopsis Charles Bronson by : Michael R. Pitts
Download or read book Charles Bronson written by Michael R. Pitts and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work covers Bronson's entire output in film and on television, and includes many film stills and photographs. Alphabetical entries list film or episode, complete cast and credits, and year of release. Accompanying each entry's plot synopsis and discussion is a survey of the critical responses to the work. The great Charles Laughton once said Bronson "has the strongest face in the business, and he is also one of its best actors." Pretty high praise for an actor who, though loved by fans worldwide, has been consistently underestimated by critics. Bronson's career has spanned five decades, from such television appearances in The Fugitive, Rawhide, Bonanza and Have Gun, Will Travel as well as the telemovie A Family of Cops (1995) and its two sequels. He will long be remembered for his role as urban vigilante Paul Kersey in the Death Wish films. Bronson is one of the most enigmatic, and also most recognizable, of all film stars.
Book Synopsis "I Am Not Master of Events" by : Larry Neal
Download or read book "I Am Not Master of Events" written by Larry Neal and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the greatest financial fiascos of all time took place at the same time and were instigated by two acquaintances: the Mississippi Bubble, on which John Law at first made a vast fortune and gained sway over French finances; and the South Sea Bubble, launched by Law and Thomas Pitt, Jr., Lord Londonderry, his main partner in England. This book tells the story of these two financial schemes from the letters and accounts of two leading personalities. Larry Neal, a distinguished economic historian, highlights the rationality of each person and also finds that the primitive exchanges of the day, though informal and completely unregulated, actually performed reasonably well.

Book Synopsis War and Diplomacy in the Napoleonic Era by : Reider Payne
Download or read book War and Diplomacy in the Napoleonic Era written by Reider Payne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives and careers of Sir Charles Stewart and his brother Lord Castlereagh take in a grand stage, from Britain and Ireland to the kingdoms and empires of western and central Europe. Throughout his life Stewart played a key role in shaping Europe: his is a Regency drama beyond anything imagined by Jane Austen: warfare, diplomacy, affairs, royal scandal, a romantic and brilliant marriage, and a brother's suicide. Stewart was at the heart of some of history's greatest events which took him from the bloodiest actions of the Napoleonic Wars to the palaces of Europe's ruling dynasties. For an all too brief period, Stewart blazed across the battlefields and chancelleries of Europe, enjoying a meteoric rise to the highest positions and influence, in a career indelibly linked to his brother's and one which is virtually unique. Stewart even found time to enjoy his share of scandal, from affairs and parties in Vienna to running a spy network which aimed to charge a Princess of Wales with adultery. Reider Payne's book is international in its scope and ambitions: with Stewart's military and diplomatic theatre of operations including Portugal, Spain, Prussia, Saxony, France, Austria and the Austrian territories in Italy. Stewart sat at the heart of the intrigues and social circles of Regency England, and his life story offers an unrivalled viewpoint into the competing claims and demands of Europe's courts.
