Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Marriage Licences, 1521-1869 I need scarcely point out to genealogists, lawyers, and students, both historical and biographical, the extreme value of such records as these, yielding, as they do, a fund of absolutely original information. But I may perhaps remind them that Marriage Licences have an interest peculiar to themselves, not only from their mention, most important though it is, of the social status of the contracting parties, but also from the fact that while baptisms and burials can be traced from Parish Registers with com parative ease, Marriages, on the contrary, from the nature of the case, have Often to be sought for far afield. Thus it is that such a collection as this is simply indispensable to working Genealogists and to all real students, supplying them, as it does, readily and promptly, with the evidences of many a missing marriage, and the names of many a wife unknown - information which, even with much time and labour, they could other wise, as they know too well, scarcely, if ever, have obtained. Book Synopsis The Arms of the Family by : John T. Shawcross
Download or read book The Arms of the Family written by John T. Shawcross and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John T. Shawcross's groundbreaking new study of John Milton is an essential work of scholarship for those who seek a greater understanding of Milton, his family, and his social and political world. Shawcross uses extensive new archival research to scrutinize several misunderstood elements of Milton's life, including his first marriage and his relationship with his brother, brother-in-law and nephews. Shawcross examines Milton's numerous royalist connections, complicating the conventional view of Milton as eminent Puritan and raising questions about the role his connections played in his relatively mild punishment after the Restoration. Unique in its methodology, The Arms of the Family is required reading not only for students of Milton but also for students of biography in general. Entire chapters dedicated to Milton's brother Christopher, his brother-in-law Thomas Agar, and his nephews Edward and John Phillips, illuminate the domestic forces that helped shape Milton's point of view. The final chapters reconsider Milton's political and sociological ideology in the light of these domestic forces and in the religious context of his three major poetic works: Paradise Lost, Paradise Regain'd, and Samson Agonistes. The Arms of the Family is a seminal work by a preeminent Miltonist, marking a major advance in Milton studies and serving as a model for those engaged in family history, social history, and the early modern period.

Book Synopsis Women and Epistolary Agency in Early Modern Culture, 1450–1690 by : James Daybell
Download or read book Women and Epistolary Agency in Early Modern Culture, 1450–1690 written by James Daybell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Epistolary Agency in Early Modern Culture, 1450–1690 is the first collection to examine the gendered nature of women’s letter-writing in England and Ireland from the late-fifteenth century through to the Restoration. The essays collected here represent an important body of new work by a group of international scholars who together look to reorient the study of women’s letters in the contexts of early modern culture. The volume builds upon recent approaches to the letter, both rhetorical and material, that have the power to transform the ways in which we understand, study and situate early modern women’s letter-writing, challenging misconceptions of women’s letters as intrinsically private, domestic and apolitical. The essays in the volume embrace a range of interdisciplinary approaches: historical, literary, palaeographic, linguistic, material and gender-based. Contributors deal with a variety of issues related to early modern women’s correspondence in England and Ireland. These include women’s rhetorical and persuasive skills and the importance of gendered epistolary strategies; gender and the materiality of the letter as a physical form; female agency, education, knowledge and power; epistolary networks and communication technologies. In this volume, the study of women’s letters is not confined to writings by women; contributors here examine not only the collaborative nature of some letter-writing but also explore how men addressed women in their correspondence as well as some rich examples of how women were constructed in and through the letters of men. As a whole, the book stands as a valuable reassessment of the complex gendered nature of early modern women’s correspondence.
Book Synopsis Painting for a Living in Tudor and Early Stuart England by : Robert Tittler
Download or read book Painting for a Living in Tudor and Early Stuart England written by Robert Tittler and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare examination of the political, social, and economic contexts in which painters in Tudor and Early Stuart England lived and workedWhile famous artists such as Holbein, Rubens, or Van Dyck are all known for their creative periods in England or their employment at the English court, they still had to make ends meet, as did the less well-known practitioners of their craft. This book, by one of the leading historians of Tudor and Stuart England, sheds light on the daily concerns, practices, and activities of many of these painters. Drawing on a biographical database comprising nearly 3000 painters and craftsmen - strangers and native English, Londoners and provincial townsmen, men and sometimes women, celebrity artists and 'mere painters' - this book offers an account of what it meant to paint for a living in early modern England. It considers the origins of these painters as well as their geographical location, the varieties of their expertise, and the personnel and spatial arrangements of their workshops. Engagingly written, the book captures a sense of mobility and exchange between England and the continent through the considerable influence of stranger-painters, undermining traditional notions about the insular character of this phase in the history of English art. By showing how painters responded to the greater political, religious, and economic upheavals of the time, the study refracts the history of England itself through the lens of this particular occupation.Engagingly written, the book captures a sense of mobility and exchange between England and the continent through the considerable influence of stranger-painters, undermining traditional notions about the insular character of this phase in the history of English art.
