Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Before the Fire of 1666: With an Historical Account of the Parish, the Ward, and the Church of St. Giles Without Cripplegate, Brought Down to the Present Time In the reign of edward I. (1274 to 1307) the city was divided into twenty-four wards, each to be governed by an alderman and common council elected by the freemen. The monasteries founded in London during this reign were the nuns of St. Clare, called the Minories the monastery of Black Friars in 1276; the Crouched Friars in 1289, and St. J ames's Hospital for lepers. Westminster Abbey was finished in the year 1285, and the famous coronation chair of the ancient Scottish kings, still preserved there, brought to England in 1296. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London City Churches: Their Use, Their Preservation and Their Extended Use In rebuilding the City churches after the great fire, Sir Christopher Wren had a unique opportunity which he turned to marvellous account. Living when Gothic architecture had practically died out, he accepted the classic orders, but from them evolved more or less a style of his own, ion don in ancient times was most richly supplied withsuitable for the requirements of the time and climate. He was master of proportion and a most admirable constructor; one of his axioms was that architecture should possess the attribute of the eternal. Being, however, compelled to practise strict economy, wherever charred walls or only the foundations of a medieval church remained in solid condition he worked them into his designs, his ground plan being often identical or almost identical with that of the previous building. In Wren's towers, which are so varied and original, again and again medieval masonry is incorporated. The outsides of his churches are now perhaps as a rule more telling than his interiors, chiefly because the effect of the latter has too often been injured by tasteless restoration. His few attempts at Gothic, although quite wrong in detail, never fail to Show evidence of his genius. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Before the Flood One loves to trace the stream upward to its fountain. Christianity was first preached in Paradise. Adam and Eve were the first believers. Abel was the first Christian martyr. They lived and loved, and prayed and praised, in the grey and misty dawn. They looked forward and upward to the rising of the Sun of righteousness, and rejoiced in the increasing light. In their faith and hope, the "woman's seed" was all and in all. By faith Enoch and Noah walked with God. These ancient saints did not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceeded from the mouth of God. The Church I ever regard, not as an ecclesiastical hierarchy - Episcopate or Presbyterate - however useful these features may be in their place, but as the company of faithful Christians, the congregation of all believers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London in the Time of the Stuarts The second difficulty is, that while the century contains an immense mass of material in the shape of plays, poems, fiction, pamphlets, sermons, travels, sketches, biographies, trials, reports, proclamations, ordinances, speeches, and every other conceivable document for the restoration of the century, the period was sharply divided into two by the Civil Wars and the Protectorate, the latter being'at best a stop-gap, while events were following each other and the mind of the nation was developing. It was, in fact, a revolutionary change which took place. The change was deepened by the Great Fire of 1666, after which a new London arose, not so picturesque, perhaps, as the former London, but reflecting the ideas of the time in its churches, which, from Mass houses became preaching rooms; and in its houses, which offered substantial comfort, more light, Ioftier rooms, standing in wider and better ordered streets, agreeing with the increase of wealth and the improvement in the general conditions of life. The first half of the century is, in fact, a continuation of the Elizabethan period with decay in literature and development in religion; the second half belongs to the eighteenth century, where we find a development of the last forty years of the seventeenth. I have endeavoured to meet this difficulty by making such a selection from the things belonging to the daily life as have not been dwelt upon in the study of the sixteenth century with those points which, while they were developed or dropped in the eighteenth, have not been in that volume considered at length.
