Download or read book Lon Chaney Speaks written by Pat Dorian and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning graphic debut: the life of the legendary silent-film actor Lon Chaney (the original Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame), as imagined by an artist whose work recalls the style and skill of early-era New Yorker cartoonists. From the artist: "'No one will ever love me!' I believe it was this near-universal fear that makes Lon Chaney's characters continue to resonate with us today. On their surface, most of them are distinctly unlikeable: they are monsters, outcasts, criminals. But through his unique magic, Chaney makes them empathetic. He pioneered the craft of makeup artist long before that term ever existed, and he used his expertise to hide himself from public view--what if nobody loved him?" PART OF THE PANTHEON GRAPHIC LIBRARY

Book Synopsis Lon Chaney's Shadow - John Jeske and the Chaney Mystique by : Suzanne Gargiulo
Download or read book Lon Chaney's Shadow - John Jeske and the Chaney Mystique written by Suzanne Gargiulo and published by . This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lon Chaney's Shadow: John Jeske and the Chaney Mystique reveals an unexplored and controversial side of the great silent film actor Lon Chaney's life by taking a close look at his relationship with friend, chauffeur, and make-up assistant, John Jeske. Books previously published of Chaney's life and career document his phenomenal talent in the art of motion picture make-up and acting, but the reader comes away without a full understanding of who Chaney was as a man. This book focuses on the human level of the relationship between Lon, his son Creighton (Lon, Jr.), second wife Hazel, and their "faithful servant," so the pieces of the emotional and psychological dynamics at work in this complex story can finally be appreciated for the significant impact they had on Chaney's career. The John Jeske story is at its core a fascinating glimpse into a world which has until now been off limits to all but the most dedicated of researchers. The majority of evidence to link the two men has been purposely suppressed or destroyed--a great deal of it was destroyed by Chaney himself and his wife Hazel to keep alive the myth that Chaney did not need help of any kind. The story of Jeske's life and work with Lon Chaney is therefore fragmented at best, but I believe, through painstaking research, I have recovered enough to finally reveal the truth. This book fills the gap left behind by every other Lon Chaney biography and is an essential addition to the libraries of Chaney fans and film historians worldwide.

Book excerpt: Melvin Burkhart the Anatomical Wonder; Zip the Pinhead; Chang and Eng, the original Siamese twins; Johnny Eck, the King of the Freaks; Koo Koo the Birdgirl; and 45 more fascinating sideshow freaks both famous and obscure are immortalized in Drew Friedman's delightful portraits. Before the politically correct impulses of the 1970s squelched the grand American tradition of the sideshow -- people born with abnormalities and others, like Jolly Jere the Fat Man, who created their oddity -- exhibited themselves to the shock and thrill of millions in sideshows nationwide. As a youth in the late 60s and early 70s, Drew Friedman often visited Coney Island with his family, and he and his brothers always insisted on seeing the Freak Show. Drew Friedman's Sideshow Freaks presents 50 of his favorite historic human oddities -- famous and obscure -- in mesmerizing full-color portraits. As in Warts and All, Old Jewish Comedians, and More Old Jewish Comedians, Drew Friedman once again meticulously, brilliantly, and affectionately brings to life people in the show business, this time focusing on America's oddest performers.

Download or read book Straight Shooting written by Robert Stack and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straight Shooting is a wry, amusing, affectionate look at Hollywood over the years – the public drama and private feuds, the tyrannical reigns of the big studio bosses, the larger-than-life exploits of the big male stars – and what it was like to be part of that world. Stack is renowned for his Emmy Award-winning performance in TV’s “The Untouchables” and for films like “The High and the Mighty” and “Written on the Wind”. Less well known are the other roles this hard-working actor excelled in over the years: son, husband, father, friend to some of Hollywood’s most admired stars, and a consummate sportsman especially skilled in skeet shooting -- National Skeet Shooting Champion at seventeen and a member of the Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame. Stack was the son of a dazzling California socialite and an advertising giant (the man responsible for slogans like “The beer that made Milwaukee famous"). Among their friends, the elder Stacks numbered many well-known Hollywood personalities – lovingly described by the actor as he remembers them from his adolescent years. Each step in Stack’s career brought him in contact with fascinating people who became legends -- story after story rolls by, each more memorable than the last, told with unceasing admiration for the personal style these stars projected and the often profound effect many of them had upon Stack’s life. “The Untouchables” years are depicted with wonderful candor as Stack recalls many fine co-stars and hilarious behind-the-scenes episodes. In addition there are cameo appearances by luminaries Ernst Lubitsch, Betty Grable, W.C. Fields, the Ritz Brothers, Joe Pasternak, “Archie Bunker”, and Lauren Bacall, to make this a rich, engrossing reading experience. Straight Shooting is filled with good feeling, friendship, and a sense of a job well done – as was Stack’s own career and life. Through it all, Robert Stack emerges on target, a straight-shooter in every sense of the word.
