Any such formalization must allow the designer to explicitly reason about the capabilities and limitations of different representations and techniques. This thesis presents a logical axiomatization of shape-based object recognition in 2D scenes with occlusion and errors in edge detection, in a domain known as CardWorld. In particular, we introduce a family of eight theories which axiomatize the image and scene domain, polygonal shapes, depiction of shapes, reasoning about surface interiors, the depiction of surfaces as planar regions, the obscuring of surfaces in a scene, and the relationship between occlusion and depiction. We then introduce shape and depiction assumptions which allow us to restrict our attention to finite models of the CardWorld theories, and consequently specify propositional theories which are logically equivalent to the CardWorld theories. In the final part of the thesis, we consider the computational complexity of finding models of these propositional theories. We show that in general, these tasks are NP-hard, but by examining restricted classes of images, we can identify tractable subclasses of the problems.

E-business applications can retrieve and catalog products according to their logos. Governmental agencies can easily inspect goods using smart mobile devices that use logo recognition techniques. However, because logos are two-dimensional shapes of varying complexity, the recognition process can be challenging. Although promising results have been found for clean logos, they have not been as robust for noisy logos. Logo Recognition: Theory and Practice is the first book to focus on logo recognition, especially under noisy conditions. Beginning with an introduction to fundamental concepts and methods in pattern and shape recognition, it surveys advances in logo recognition. The authors also propose a new logo recognition system that can be used under adverse conditions such as broken lines, added noise, and occlusion. The proposed system introduces a novel polygonal approximation, a robust indexing scheme, and a new line segment Hausdorff distance (LHD) matching method that can handle more distortion and transformation types than previous techniques. In the first stage, raw logos are transformed into normalized line segment maps. In the second stage, effective line pattern features are used to index the database to generate a moderate number of likely models. In the third stage, an improved LHD measure screens and generates the best matches. A comprehensive overview of logo recognition, the book also presents successful applications of the technology and suggests directions for future research.

Hence, the motivations behind the construction of recognition systems, which have the ability to function in the real world, is unquestionable and would serve industrial (e.g. quality control), military (e.g. automatie target recognition) and community needs (e.g. aiding the visually impaired). It repre sents the culmination of research topics that I have either covered personally or in conjunction with my PhD students. Research on digital image processing by computers was initiated about 30 years ago, and since then a wide variety of image processing algorithms have been devised. Using such image processing algorithms and advanced hardware technologies, many practical ma chines with visual recognition capability have been implemented and are used in various fields: optical character readers and design chart readers in offices, position-sensing and inspection systems in factories, computer tomography and medical X-ray and microscope examination systems in hospitals, and so on. Although these machines are useful for specific tasks, their capabilities are limited. That is, they can analyze only simple images which are recorded under very carefully adjusted photographic conditions: objects to be recognized are isolated against a uniform background and under well-controlled artificial lighting. In the late 1970s, many image understanding systems were de veloped to study the automatic interpretation of complex natural scenes. They introduced artificial intelligence techniques to represent the knowl edge about scenes and to realize flexible control structures. The first author developed an automatic aerial photograph interpretation system based on the blackboard model (Naga1980). Although these systems could analyze fairly complex scenes, their capabilities were still limited; the types of recognizable objects were limited and various recognition vii viii Preface errors occurred due to noise and the imperfection of segmentation algorithms.

Users supply the object recognition system with models of known object classes in the form of production rules. The system describes each instance of an object found within an image scene as a collection of facts. The modeled rules act upon these facts in a Prolog environment to obtain an interpretation of the original image scene. Since users supply the object models and the Prolog environment supplies the interference mechanism for interpretation, the primary task of the object recognition system is the description process. For each object instance identified within the image scene, declarative statements are formulated which represent observer components, features or attributes of that object. The description of an object instance is restricted to its geometric components which are derived from a skeleton or stick-figure representation of a 2-D silhouette portrayal of an object found in the original image scene. Therefore, object classifications can be modeled in a general way so that the size and orientation of the object is independent of that model.
