Its publication was first announced in 1947 under the title Critica del 'Conosci te stesso' (Critique of 'Know Thyself') and in 1948 as the 'second edition' of Critica dei princpi logici (Critique of Logical Principles), a study of Kant and Hegel first published in the early 1940s, before Delia Volpe became a Marxist. As late as January 1951 an article in the journal Pensiero critico announced it yet again, this time as Introduzione materialistica alla logica (Materialist Introduction to Logic). But this article was published many months after its submission to the journal, and the first edition of Logica come scienza positiva had in fact appeared in August 1950. The central concern of Logic as a Positive Science is to establish a scientific logic free of any aprioristic speculation. Delia Volpe argues that there can be no specifically philosophical logic, or method of producing true knowledge. On the contrary, there is only one logic and one method: that of modern, experimental science. The establishment of this proposition is, according to the dictates of his method itself, part and parcel of a description of what that logic is, and how it is distinct from and superior to any other. Della Volpe maintains that the liberation of philosophy from idealist speculation is itself a historical process, and critical consideration of that process is integral to the constitution of a genuinely scientific logic and methodology.

The author begins with a discussion of current attitudes toward paradox in mathematics, science, and logic, and then moves gradually toward a differentiation of philosophical paradox in the strict sense from literary, religious, and logic paradox. Book excerpt: The present book was written some twenty years ago but it has not lost its topicality, for it contains an important re-assessment of the relations of two main streams of contemporary philosophy - the Analytical and the Dialectic. Adherents and critics of these traditions tend to assurnethat they are diametrically opposed, that their roots, concerns and approaches contradict each other, and that no reconciliation is possible. In contradistinction Russell derives both traditions from the common root of the dissatisfaction with the arguments against speculative philosophy. These according to the author leave a lacuna - certain elementsof our Weltanschaaung have been removed, but they cannot be removed without replacement lest we have an incomplete world view, so incomplete in fact that it cannot be viable. According to Russell part of this vacuum is taken up by the analytical tradition but this tradition is not capable of taking up the remainder of it. That portion of the vacant space is however taken up by the dialectical tradi tion, which in turn cannot itself handle the whole of the problem. Thus the two reactions to the demise of speculative philosophy appear to be complementary in at least this sense. But the author goes further, for according to hirn the analytical arguments themselves clearly point to the emergence of dialectical problems, and the dialectical problems themselves need some such background to arise.

Book excerpt: In the Science of Logic, Hegel sets out to show that the process by which consciousness assimilates objects into mental concepts is more dynamic and, one might say, messier then Kant describes it. Just as he does in the Phenomenology, Hegel traces here the movement of consciousness, or the idea, from basic categories to more complex ones. Consciousness attempts to grasp objects at a most basic level, finds this first attempt somehow unsatisfying as exposing inadequacies or contradictions, and proceeds to a higher level, and so on. In the Phenomenology and elsewhere, Hegel seems to imply that this dialectical unfolding is an inherent feature of the world we inhabit, governing history and culture. In Logic we see that the dialectic is a phenomena of ideas. But the two dimensions of reality (i.e., history, culture, and the world in general) and our ideal, mental, or conceptual grasp of things are not really separable. The world we live in is a world created by ideas. But our ideas do not emanate from the mind of a single individual, as other idealists such as Kant seem to imply. Concepts have an objective status. They exist outside of any individual as taken-for-granted reality. They belong to common cultural understanding.
