Book Synopsis Deep Smarts by : Dorothy Leonard-Barton
Download or read book Deep Smarts written by Dorothy Leonard-Barton and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep smarts are the engine of any organization as well as the essential value that individuals build throughout their careers. Distinct from IQ, this type of expertise consists of practical wisdom: accumulated knowledge, know-how, and intuition gained through extensive experience. How do such smarts develop? And what happens when people with deep smarts leave a particular job or the organization? Can any of their smarts be transferred? Should they be? Basing their conclusions on a multi-year research project, Dorothy Leonard and Walter Swap argue that cultivating and managing deep smarts are critical parts of any leader's job. The authors draw on examples from firms of all sizes and types to illustrate the connection between deep smarts and organizational viability and continuous innovation. Leonard and Swap describe the origins and limits of deep smarts and outline processes for cultivating and leveraging them across the organization. Developing an experience repertoire and receiving strategic guidance from wise coaches can help individuals move up the ladder of expertise from novice to master. Addressing a topic of increasing importance as the Boomer generation retires, Deep Smarts challenges leaders to take a hands-on approach to managing the experience-based knowledge shaping the future of their organizations.
Download or read book Norman Granz written by Tad Hershorn and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Any book on my life would start with my basic philosophy of fighting racial prejudice. I loved jazz, and jazz was my way of doing that," Norman Granz told Tad Hershorn during the final interviews given for this book. Granz, who died in 2001, was iconoclastic, independent, immensely influential, often thoroughly unpleasant—and one of jazz’s true giants. Granz played an essential part in bringing jazz to audiences around the world, defying racial and social prejudice as he did so, and demanding that African-American performers be treated equally everywhere they toured. In this definitive biography, Hershorn recounts Granz’s story: creator of the legendary jam session concerts known as Jazz at the Philharmonic; founder of the Verve record label; pioneer of live recordings and worldwide jazz concert tours; manager and recording producer for numerous stars, including Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson.

Book Synopsis World of Workcraft by : Dale Roberts
Download or read book World of Workcraft written by Dale Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research demonstrated some years ago that there is a strong positive correlation between ’play’, ’fun’ and organisational performance. More recently, organisations have started to wrestle with the idea of how to engage the skills and motivation of the video game generation; as customers and as employees. The practical application of gamification is part of the disruptive innovation that offers businesses radical new ways of working, learning and performing. In a nutshell, gamification is the concept of applying engaging elements of game theory to non-game applications. An example would be to create a game to learn something new for work. Companies need to embrace the idea of blending games with work. And in order for that to happen, gamification must have a basic knowledge base and skill set, as well as both theory and practical application of its core principles. Dale Roberts’s World of Workcraft provides the context and background to the need for and potential benefit of gamification as a means of turning a traditional corporate culture and structure into a dynamic community. He also provides guidance on how to (and how not to) introduce these concepts successfully.

Book Synopsis Nikolaus Dumba (1830-1900) by : John Tzafettas
Download or read book Nikolaus Dumba (1830-1900) written by John Tzafettas and published by AKAKIA Publications. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nikolaus Dumba, was a most inspired and enthusiastic Viennese who became Maecenas of the Arts and national benefactor for Austria and Greece. He was most prominent in Vienna’s cultural life in the 2nd half of the 19th century and was acclaimed as a ‘genius of the Muses’, although he also distinguished himself in other fields, such as those of politics and finance. He had a leading role in the shaping of New Vienna. «...without Dumba many of the Vienna monuments would have never been created, neither of Schubert, Schiller, Beethoven or Grillparzer, nor that of Motzart and Makart»(Neue Freie Presse 25.03.1900). His personal friends Johannes Brahms and Johann Strauss extolled the legendary role he played in music and the arts and in the ‘expansion and embellishment’ of the city of Vienna by dedicating the choral waltz Neu Wien (New Vienna) to him. The ‘immortal’ Donauwalzer (Blue Danube Waltz), may have not existed without his personal intervention as President then of the ‘Vienna Men’s Choral Society’. He is best known as «founder of the Musikverein in its present form...» in the Dumba Strasse. He donated the ‘Dumba-Schubert collection’, the largest in the world, to the Vienna Library. Nikolaus Dumba made a distinct political career as Member of the Austrian Parliament for 30 years (1870-1900) and served as personal adviser to the emperor Franz Josef. His name was registered in the Golden Book of Vienna’s Honorary Citizens and his tomb is included among those of the great composers in the Vienna’s Central Cemetery.
