Book Synopsis Where Are the Women? by : Sarah Tyson
Download or read book Where Are the Women? written by Sarah Tyson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy has not just excluded women. It has also been shaped by the exclusion of women. As the field grapples with the reality that sexism is a central problem not just for the demographics of the field but also for how philosophy is practiced, many philosophers have begun to rethink the canon. Yet attempts to broaden European and Anglophone philosophy to include more women in the discipline’s history or to acknowledge alternative traditions will not suffice as long as exclusionary norms remain in place. In Where Are the Women?, Sarah Tyson makes a powerful case for how redressing women’s exclusion can make philosophy better. She argues that engagements with historical thinkers typically afforded little authority can transform the field, outlining strategies based on the work of three influential theorists: Genevieve Lloyd, Luce Irigaray, and Michèle Le Doeuff. Following from the possibilities they open up, at once literary, linguistic, psychological, and political, Tyson reclaims two passionate nineteenth-century texts—the Declaration of Sentiments from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and Sojourner Truth’s speech at the 1851 Akron, Ohio, Women’s Convention—showing how the demands for equality, rights, and recognition sought in the early women’s movement still pose quandaries for contemporary philosophy, feminism, and politics. Where Are the Women? challenges us to confront the reality that women’s exclusion from philosophy has been an ongoing project and to become more critical both of how we see existing injustices and of how we address them.
Book Synopsis The Suspended Middle by : John Milbank
Download or read book The Suspended Middle written by John Milbank and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Jesuit Henri de Lubac (1896 1991) was arguably the most revolutionary yet under-acknowledged theologian of the twentieth century. He proposed that Western theology since the early modern period had lost sight of the key to integrating faith and reason -- namely, the truth that all human beings are naturally oriented toward the supernatural. Originally published in 2005, The Suspended Middle by John Milbank defends and amplifies de Lubac s provocative thesis and rebuts its many critics. In this second edition Milbank has expanded and clarified his argument throughout to take greater account of new critiques of de Lubac. The future of the Christian faith is at stake, says Milbank, as he urges his readers to recover and reinvigorate de Lubac s biblical-theological-philosophical vision.

Book Synopsis Liturgical Time and Space by : Anscar J. Chupungco
Download or read book Liturgical Time and Space written by Anscar J. Chupungco and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume in the Handbook for Liturgical Studies series, Volume V: Liturgical Time and Space contains the concluding material for an integral study of the liturgy. It opens with a preliminary notion of time and space, before discussing in detail three types of liturgical celebrations on which time and space have a direct and particular bearing. The first of these is the Liturgy of the Hours. This topic is developed in the light of the early Christian tradition until the fourth century and its subsequent forms in both East and West. The second is the Liturgical Year, traditionally called the anni circulas. The development of the Liturgical Year during the first four centuries is reviewed. This is followed by adetaled study of the Byzantine, Roman, and non-Roman Western tradition. It concludes with the theology and spirituality of the Liturgical Year wherein the mystery of Christ as a saving event is made present in time, so that the faithful may lay hold of it through the Word and the sacraments. The theology of liturgical space is drawn from the mutual interaction between the assembled community, which gives meaning to the place of assembly, and the place itself, which upholds and signifies community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revised edition of John Milbank’s masterpiece, which sketches the outline of a specifically theological social theory. Book Synopsis The Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth by : Willi Marxen
Download or read book The Resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth written by Willi Marxen and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these lectures, delivered before an audience drawn from all faculties of the University of Munster, Professor Marxsen explores the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus. He discusses the relevant texts - the Apostles' Creed, the Gospels, Paul, and compares the different traditions. He looks carefully at what we can really know about the 'Easter events', at what the ancient texts set out to say and the ideas of which they made use. He then goes on to show in some detail how the traditions were developed in subsequent history and what it might mean today for a Christian to say 'Jesus is Risen'. The book ends with a chapter on the Christian's future hope. Professor Marxsen deliberately talks about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. In so doing he means to stress that the Risen Christ is identical with the earthly Jesus. Those who lay stress on the resurrection must also remember the faith to which Jesus of Nazareth summoned men.

In Corpus Mysticum de Lubacinvestigates a particular understanding of the relation of the church to the eucharist. He sets out the nature of the church as communion, a doctrine that influenced the thinking of the Second Vatican Council. Download or read book Mexican Phoenix written by D. A. Brading and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan Diego, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared in 1531 miraculously imprinting her likeness on his cape, was canonised in Mexico in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. In 1999, the revered image of Our Lady of Guadalupe had been proclaimed patron saint of the Americas by the Pope. How did a poor Indian and a sixteenth-century Mexican painting of the Virgin Mary attract such unprecedented honours? Across the centuries the enigmatic power of the image has aroused fervent devotion in Mexico: it served as the banner of the rebellion against Spanish rule and, despite scepticism and anti-clericalism, still remains a potent symbol of the modern nation. This book traces the intellectual origins, the sudden efflorescence and the adamantine resilience of the tradition of Our Lady of Guadalupe and will fascinate anyone concerned with the history of religion and its symbols.
