The conclusion reached in this paper is that spin-offs benefitting other rmanufacturing industries are more obviously felt in the Klang Valley Metropolitan Area outside Malacca than in the state itself.

Indeed, it is fashionable to speak of 'Brunei Shell' and 'Brunei' as one entity. But as the nation prepares for independence, the anomalous state-company relationship is likely to wear thin. From the econometric perspective, there are hardly any forward or backward linkages arising from the activities of Brunei Shell. The real linkage, however, lies in the fact that Brunei finances all its projects from petro-dollars.

Book excerpt: This paper begins by discussing the principal concepts and definitions used in the study of internal migration. The direct method of estimating internal migration based on the record of the change of residence is reviewed, while the three indirect methods known as the vital statistics method, the survival rate method, and the place of birth method are evaluated in somewhat more detail. The place of birth method was selected to compute the lifetime migration of the eleven states in Peninsular Malaysia in the three post-war census years - 1947, 1957, 1970 - and the interstate migration during the two intercensal periods - 1947-57 and 1957-70. The results of the estimation reveal that, apart from the pronounced differences in the level of interstate migration among the eleven states, there have been significant shifts in the pattern of interstate migration during the post-war years.

Book excerpt: This paper examines whether exchange rate risk (defined as the variety of nominal and price-adjusted import-weighed exchange rates) has increased in the present system of generalized floating for eight Asian developing countries. The first major finding is that the samples of import-weighted exchange rates conform better to non-normal stable Paretian distributions than to normal ones; sample standard deviation is therefore an erratic and misleading measure of variability. The second is that the scale and Gini's mean difference measures of variability indicate that exchange rate risk has increased substantially - in nominal terms more than in real terms and in the short run more than in the long run.

For the Thais, birth control pactice is related to women's education and the number of live births. For the Chinese, place of residence, the level of household income and the number of children ever born are significantly related to the dependent variable. For the Moslems, none of these variables nor any of the other independent variables and covariates is significantly related to the practice of birth control. More research is needed in this area to find out what factors are most related to the adoption of birth control by the Muslims.

While the relationship between ethnicity and fertility will not be directly studied or measured in this manuscript, inferences and hypotheses will be drawn from an integration of available literature on the various ethnic groups in the Philippines on the one hand and a review of relevant population data from existing surveys on the other.
