Book excerpt: During the period 1970-80, nearly 10,000 jobs were created in the industrial estates of Malacca. However, multinational import-export firms in the Free Trade Zones dominate the industrialization process, and whatever advantageous regional effects there may be are limited. The conclusion reached in this paper is that spin-offs benefitting other rmanufacturing industries are more obviously felt in the Klang Valley Metropolitan Area outside Malacca than in the state itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great cities of Latin America and Asia, international business and local firms meet and, in particular, influence teh development strategies of Third World countries. The authors of Theatres of Accumulation argue that these cities play a crucial role in the process of capital accumulation and of unequal exchange and dependency. They examine the twin patterns of convergence and divergence in lifestyles and economic activities, and show how the flow of capital through the urban system beings net losses to the rural regions and further exacerbates income inequalities between regions and classes. Theatres of accumulation provides an overview of urbanization in the Third World, as well as specific case studies. It deals with theoretical issues and projects the likely developments in urbanization in the future. Armstrong and McGee's work is essential reading for social science and planning professionals and students, in the developed world and the Third World, who are concerned with urban processes. This book was first published in 1985.

Since the sixties, however, there has been a revival of theoretical and methodological orientations in sociology, converging under the general designation of "interactionism". The various streams of sociological thinking are described, "interactionism" is discussed, and the interactionist paradigm is compared with some other major streams of contemporary social thinking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the salient features to strike the researcher doing the study on culture and fertility of the people in Peninsular Malaysia is the cultural heterogeneity of its present population. Although the Malays or "bumiputeras" (sons of the soil) were original residents, other ethnic groups, mainly the Indonesians, Chinese and Indians, have contributed to current size, composition and distribution of the population through the process of immigration in the course of history. the topical areas under the first two sections of this monograph are indeed very wide, both in time and other perspectives. As a result, we have demarcated the period prior to the impact of colonialism and the growth of plural society during the British period as points in time which have relevant demographic and cultural significance for the purposes of this paper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper seeks to explain the linkage between oil and development in Brunei. Oil is presently the biggest business in Brunei. As elsewhere, it is fraught with political overtones. The oil industry in Brunei is dominated by Brunei Shell. However, unlike the position of oil companies in other oil exporting countries, that of Brunei Shell is so dominant and privileged that it has created for itself a state within a sultanate. Indeed, it is fashionable to speak of 'Brunei Shell' and 'Brunei' as one entity. But as the nation prepares for independence, the anomalous state-company relationship is likely to wear thin. From the econometric perspective, there are hardly any forward or backward linkages arising from the activities of Brunei Shell. The real linkage, however, lies in the fact that Brunei finances all its projects from petro-dollars.

In Singapore, ethnicity is found to be the most significant factor affecting all the four fertility-related measures, namely, the number of children ever born, desired family size, wife's age at first marriage, and current contraceptive use.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper begins by discussing the principal concepts and definitions used in the study of internal migration. The direct method of estimating internal migration based on the record of the change of residence is reviewed, while the three indirect methods known as the vital statistics method, the survival rate method, and the place of birth method are evaluated in somewhat more detail. The place of birth method was selected to compute the lifetime migration of the eleven states in Peninsular Malaysia in the three post-war census years - 1947, 1957, 1970 - and the interstate migration during the two intercensal periods - 1947-57 and 1957-70. The results of the estimation reveal that, apart from the pronounced differences in the level of interstate migration among the eleven states, there have been significant shifts in the pattern of interstate migration during the post-war years.

Book excerpt: This paper examines whether exchange rate risk (defined as the variety of nominal and price-adjusted import-weighed exchange rates) has increased in the present system of generalized floating for eight Asian developing countries. The first major finding is that the samples of import-weighted exchange rates conform better to non-normal stable Paretian distributions than to normal ones; sample standard deviation is therefore an erratic and misleading measure of variability. The second is that the scale and Gini's mean difference measures of variability indicate that exchange rate risk has increased substantially - in nominal terms more than in real terms and in the short run more than in the long run.

Book excerpt: This paper attempts to evaluate whether the PTA scheme has been successful in liberalizing intra-ASEAN trade through the new tariff reductions. More specfically, it stimulates the maximum potential trade creation effects within ASEAN of the 20% across-the-board tariff reduction on all items with import value of less than US$50,000 each in 1978 trade statstics. In addition, the implications of the latest proposal by the ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) to consider raising the cut-off ceiling to US$500,000 are also analysed.

Book excerpt: This paper, exploring the relationship between culture and fertility in Thailand, cites empirical evidence showing that each ethnic group's birth control practice is affected differently by different kinds of variables. For the Thais, birth control pactice is related to women's education and the number of live births. For the Chinese, place of residence, the level of household income and the number of children ever born are significantly related to the dependent variable. For the Moslems, none of these variables nor any of the other independent variables and covariates is significantly related to the practice of birth control. More research is needed in this area to find out what factors are most related to the adoption of birth control by the Muslims.

Book excerpt: These five countries monographs, stemming from a regional research project on "Culture and fertility in Southeast Asia", initiated by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, aim at bridging a gap in the study of relationship between ethnicity and fertility in the region. Developed on essentially the same lines, each monograph presents in turn the individual country's historical background leading to the present social structure; the patterns of intergroup behaviour; population policies and family planning programmes; the development of the demographic structure; and finally an analysis of available secondary data, using multiple classification analysis, to determine the impact of key variables on fertility patterns. Though each is an entity in itself, the five monographs complement one another and taken together provide a useful background for future research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph is concerned with gaining an insight into the relationship between ethnic identity and population behaviour in the Philippines. Establishing the linkage between ethnic diversity and fertility differentials will have definite implications for population policies and programmes. This interest grows from the general recognition that such policies and programmes have often been planned and implemented on a national scale, with little consideration for ethnic diversity. While the relationship between ethnicity and fertility will not be directly studied or measured in this manuscript, inferences and hypotheses will be drawn from an integration of available literature on the various ethnic groups in the Philippines on the one hand and a review of relevant population data from existing surveys on the other.
