This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a bibliography of a wide scope of British and Irish post-graduate theses of maritime economic and social history. Its intent is to make these informative, under-utilised texts more accessible for scholars, in response to the deep expansion of subject as a historical discipline. It aims to keep these texts, often unpublished, from lapsing into obscurity. The author takes a broad approach to the subject area, including strands more particular to science than the humanities, and history as recent as the year of publication, intending the resource to be as comprehensive as possible, and of maximum use to present and future scholars. The material is primarily gathered and cross-referenced from Roger R. Bilboul’s Restrospective Index to Theses of Great Britain and Ireland 1716-1950, the ASLIB Index, and the Institute of Historical Research of the University of London. Each entry comprises Surname, Thesis Title (truncated for length where necessary), Degree Awarded, Awarding Institution, and Date. The database comprises 2500 entries, subdivided into twenty-five sections concerning:- the shipping business and all commercial/mercantile aspects of operation; exploration, cartography, and navigation; shipping and shipbuilding technologies; docks and harbours; maritime labour; maritime medical issues; naval history, piracy, privateering; international relations; maritime law; pollution and the maritime environment; fishing; sea-port communities; culture, literature, and art; maritime economics; marine architecture; coastal planning; tourism; and off-shore oil. The sections are further subdivided by location, and a geographical index is included for ease of reference. The author assures that the majority of theses are readily accessible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of Hull as the nation's biggest fishing port began in the mid-nineteenth century, the foundations being laid by the smacksmen of Brixham and Ramsgate. The arrival of steam pushed the boundaries out beyond the North Sea, and after 1936 Hull was committed to distant water and fishing. Steam cutters were in use by the 1870s but the successful conversion of steam paddle tugs for fishing marked the beginning of a revolution in North Sea fishing. Within twenty years the sailing smack had vanished from Hull; steam power meant that trawling was no longer dependent on the wind and fishing could take place beyond the confines of the North Sea. This book a unique pictorial history of Hull's fishing industry and its community; from the role of the trawlers during the two world wars to the amalgamations of the 1960s and 70s, the infamous Cod Wars and the massive reduction of the fleet after 1975. Despite the dark clouds, there has been good news, and October 2001 saw the opening of the new 4.5 million Hull fish market, Fishgate, a new chapter in Hull's fishing heritage.

Book excerpt: True stories of an English fishing community and its families, from street games and superstitions to the dangers of shipwrecks and war—includes photos. Survivors of a wrecked trawler stagger ashore in Iceland during the bitter winter of 1910 in a hair-raising tale based upon Skipper Brewer’s handwritten log. Another skipper, “Mad” Rilatt, outwits German U-boats in the First World War. A suicide mission to war-torn Norway is undertaken in 1940 aboard a former Hull trawler. Amy Johnston, who flew to Australia single-handed, is revealed as a Hessle Road girl. And “Cowboys of the Arctic Circle” shows how Hollywood influenced the young trawler lads. The fishing community of Hessle Road in Hull represents a unique breed of people who endured hardship from the elements in times of peace—and danger from the enemy in times of war. Within the world of the fishing families of Hull is a whole universe of humanity. Based upon interviews and three decades of research, a range of colorful tales are presented in Hull’s Fishing Heritage.

Book excerpt: Pioneers, Leaders and Followers in Multilevel and Polycentric Climate Governance focuses on pioneers, leaders and followers as central drivers for international climate change governance innovations. A burgeoning literature has identified pioneers and leaders as central drivers for international climate change governance innovations. A wide range of actors (such as international organisations, the European Union, NGOs, corporations and cities) have been identified as potential and actual climate pioneers and/or leaders. Despite this, much of the academic debate is still largely focused on states. To address this research gap, this volume focuses primarily on non-state actors in different multilevel and polycentric governance structures. The chapters offer a critical analysis of the different types of actors (e.g. the EU, corporate actors, NGOs and cities) who can act as pioneers and/or leaders at different levels of climate governance (including the international, supranational, regional, national and local) encompassing non-state and state actors. The volume provides a clear conceptualisation of pioneers, leaders and followers while assessing their motives, capacities, styles and strategies. It examines critically the dynamic interrelationship between leaders and pioneers on the one hand, and followers and laggards on the other. Moreover, it analyses how multilevel and polycentric climate governance structures enable and/or constrain climate pioneers, leaders and followers. This volume will be of great use to scholars of environmental governance, climate change, and international governance. The chapters were originally published as a special issue in Environmental Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Trawlertown takes a journey through the British distant-water fishery and its port-city connections in an era of disruption. In 1976, defeat in the Anglo-Icelandic Cod Wars saw the British trawling fleet excluded from their traditional hunting grounds. Combining with wider global factors, the move brought an end to long-established trawling practices, with profound social, economic and cultural repercussions. Through a case study of the port of Hull, oral history and archival research explore the challenges, responses and legacy of rapid change. Although the emphasis is on Hull, this is far from a local history. Hull’s position among the world leading distant-water pioneers gives the story international significance. Focusing on memory, lived experience and place, the book goes beyond established narratives. Personal acts of remembering offer cultural perspectives on how global events and marine policy impact upon the seafaring communities that live with the consequences. The Cod Wars signaled an end, yet amid the disruption there were also new beginnings. And in the wake of an active fishery, the rhythms of the past continue to resonate in the negotiation of fishing heritage within the contemporary city. Through the convergence of time, place and memory, this holistic narrative of interweaving stories reveals the intricacies of our human interaction with the marine environment and the aftermath when its threads are broken.
