Book excerpt: William Ferguson's classic photographic portrayal of the major pre-Columbian ruins of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras is now available from UNM Press in a completely revised edition. Magnificent aerial and ground photographs give both armchair and actual visitors unparalleled views of fifty-one ancient cities. The restored areas of each site and their interesting and exotic features are shown within each group of ruins. The authors have thoroughly revised the text for this new edition, and they have added over 30 new photographs and illustrations as well as a completely new chapter by Richard E. W. Adams on regional states and empires in ancient Mesoamerica. Over a span of three thousand years between 1500 B.C. and A.D. 1500 great civilizations, including the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Maya, Toltec, Zapotec, and Aztec, flourished, waned, and died in Mesoamerica. These indigenous cultures of Mexico and Central America are brought to life in Mesoamerica's Ancient Cities through stunning color photographs. The authors include the most recent research and most widely accepted theoretical perspectives on Mesoamerican civilizations. Ideal for the general reader as well as scholars of Mesoamerica, this volume makes a significant contribution to our knowledge of the Americas.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Castle, Town, and Port of Dover The materials at the disposal of a writer on Dover are fairly abundant. The British Museum possesses a quantity of very valuable documents, the town accounts exist from the year 1365, and the minutes of the Common Assemblies from 1506. In addition to these important records numerous other manu scripts, many oi them of the greatest value, have been consulted personally, and Professor Burrows very kindly placed his notes of others at my disposal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dover Charters and Other Documents: In the Possession of the Corporation of Dover The various documents contained in this volume, with the exception of those included in the ppendices, have been transcribed from the originals in the possession of the Corporation of Dover. They cover the period embraced between the years 1227 and 1569. The large majority of them, as is natural, are of purely local interest, but there are some which will be found to possess historical importance, especially with reference to the Cinque Ports. The document numbered XXVI. Is, so far as I know, the earliest record of the ancient Court of Shepway, and affords full information as to its constitution, jurisdiction, and methods of procedure. The manuscript consists of a double folio, and is evidently the remains of the original Quatemu: kept by the Clerk of the Court. It unfortunately throws no light upon the vexed question as to the locality in which the Court was held. The oath of allegiance to Henry VIII. Contained in XCIX. Is published in full, I believe, for the first time. The various deeds have been printed in chronological order, but have been arranged under suitable headings in the Contents columns; and, for the convenience of those who may at any time wish to consult the originals, the reference to the Corporation Archives is in every case given in square brackets at the end of each document. One Charter of the reign of Edward IV. Has been omitted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of Rochester and Its Environs: To Which Is Added, a Description of the Towns, Villages, Gentlemen's Seats, and Ancient Buildings, Situate on or Near the Road From London to Margate, Deal, and Dover In the ensuing work, very frequent are the references to the Registrum Roffense, a book published by John Thorpe, esq.; from the accurate MSS. of his father Dr. Thorpe, who was no less eminent for his knowledge of antiquities, than for his skill in physic: it would be ungrateful in the editor to omit acknowledging, how much labour and expence he has saved, by having an opportunity of examining in print, this curious and valuable collection of ancient deeds. He is likewise obliged to the reverend Mr. Austen of Rochester, for some very useful and entertaining articles of information; and it is not without regret that he finds himself no$ at liberty to insert the names of several other ingenious and learned gentlemen, who have contributed their assistance; and especially of one, whose name would do honour to any publication; and by whose friendly communications, the editor has been enabled to give a clearer and more circumstantial account of some part of the ecclesiastical history of this city, and the neighbouring district, than he could otherwise have done.
