Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on power systems reliability and generating unit commitments, which are essential in the design and evaluation of the electric power systems for planning, control, and operation, this informative volume covers the concepts of basic reliability engineering, such as power system spinning reserve, types of load curves and their objectives and benefits, the electric power exchange, and the system operation constraints. The author explains how the probability theory plays an important role in reliability applications and discusses the probability applications in electric power systems that led to the development of the mathematical models that are illustrated in the book. The algorithms that are presented throughout the chapters will help researchers and engineers to implement their own suitable programs where needed and will also be valuable for students. The Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Fuzzy Logic (FL) systems are discussed and a number of load estimation models are built for some cases, where their formulas are developed. A number of developed models are presented, including the Kronecker techniques, Fourth-Order Runge-Kutta, System Multiplication Method, or Adams Method; and components with different connections and different distributions are presented. A number of examples are explained showing how to build and evaluate power plants.

Book excerpt: We are very pleased to be asked to co-author this book for a variety of reasons, one of which was that it gave us further opportunity to work together. The scope proposed was very wide with the only significant proviso being that the book should be in a mongraph-style and not a teaching text. This require ment has given us the opportunity to compile a wide range of relevant material relating to present-day knowledge and application in power system reliability. As many readers will be aware, we have collaborated in many ways over a relatively long period and have co-authored two other books on reliability evaluation. Both of these previous books were structured as teaching texts. This present book is not a discourse on "how to do reliability evaluation" but a discussion on "why it should be done and what can be done and achieved" and as such does not replace or conflict with the previous books. The three books are complementary and each enhances the others. The material contained in this book is not specifically original since it is based on information which we have published in other forms either jointly or as co authors with various other people, particularly our many research students. We sincerely acknowledge the important contributions made by all these students and colleagues. There are too many to mention individually in this preface but their names appear frequently in the references at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: The probabilistic reliability evaluation of power systems is a complex and highly dimensional problem that often requires a large amount of computational resources, particularly processing power and time. The complexity of this problem is only increasing with the advent of the smart grid and its accompanying technologies, such as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Such technologies, while they add convenience, intelligence, and reduce environmental impacts, also add dynamic and stochastic loads that challenge the current reliability and security of the power grid. One method that is often used to evaluate the reliability of power systems is Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). As the complexity and dimensionality of a power system grows, MCS requires more and more resources leading to longer computational times. Multiple methods have previously been developed that aid in reducing the computational resources necessary for MCS in order to achieve a more efficient and timely convergence while continuing to accurately assess the reliability of a given system. Examples include analytical state space decomposition, population based metaheuristic algorithms (PBMs), and the use of high performance computing (HPC). In order to address these issues, this dissertation is focused on improving the performance of algorithms used to examine the level of reliability in composite power systems through the use of computational intelligence (CI) and HPC, while also investigating the impact of PHEVs on the power grid at the composite and distribution levels. Contributions include the development and exploration of 3 variations of a new, hybrid algorithm called intelligent state space pruning (ISSP) that combines PBMs with non-sequential MCS in order to intelligently decompose, or prune, a given state space and improve computational efficiency, an evaluation of the use of latin hypercube sampling and low discrepancy sequences in place of MCS, the use of serial and parallel support vector machines for state classification when evaluating power system reliability using MCS, an investigation of the impact that PHEVs will have when integrated into the power grid at the distribution level, and the development of a new model for the probabilistic evaluation of composite system reliability that includes one of the key technologies in the smart grid, PHEVs.

Book excerpt: The application of quantitative reliability evaluation in electric power sys tems has now evolved to the point at which most utilities use these techniques in one or more areas of their planning, design, and operation. Most of the techniques in use are based on analytical models and resulting analytical evaluation procedures. Improvements in and availability of high-speed digi tal computers have created the opportunity to analyze many of these prob lems using stochastic simulation methods and over the last decade there has been increased interest in and use made of Monte Carlo simulation in quantitative power system reliability assessment. Monte Carlo simulation is not a new concept and recorded applications have existed for at least 50 yr. However, localized high-speed computers with large-capacity storage have made Monte Carlo simulation an available and sometimes preferable option for many power system reliability applications. Monte Carlo simulation is also an integral part of a modern undergrad uate or graduate course on reliability evaluation of general engineering systems or specialized areas such as electric power systems. It is hoped that this textbook will help formalize the many existing applications of Monte Carlo simulation and assist in their integration in teaching programs. This book presents the basic concepts associated with Monte Carlo simulation.

Book excerpt: Adverse weather such as hurricanes can significantly affect the reliability of composite power systems. Predicting the impact of hurricanes can help utilities for better preparedness and make appropriate restoration arrangements. In this dissertation, the impact of hurricanes on the reliability of composite power systems is investigated. Firstly, the impact of adverse weather on the long-term reliability of composite power systems is investigated by using Markov cut-set method. The Algorithms for the implementation is developed. Here, two-state weather model is used. An algorithm for sequential simulation is also developed to achieve the same goal. The results obtained by using the two methods are compared. The comparison shows that the analytical method can obtain comparable results and meantime it can be faster than the simulation method. Secondly, the impact of hurricanes on the short-term reliability of composite power systems is investigated. A fuzzy inference system is used to assess the failure rate increment of system components. Here, different methods are used to build two types of fuzzy inference systems. Considering the fact that hurricanes usually last only a few days, short-term minimal cut-set method is proposed to compute the time-specific system and nodal reliability indices of composite power systems. The implementation demonstrates that the proposed methodology is effective and efficient and is flexible in its applications. Thirdly, the impact of hurricanes on the short-term reliability of composite power systems including common-cause failures is investigated. Here, two methods are proposed to archive this goal. One of them uses a Bayesian network to alleviate the dimensionality problem of conditional probability method. Another method extends minimal cut-set method to accommodate common-cause failures. The implementation results obtained by using the two methods are compared and their discrepancy is analyzed. Finally, the proposed methods in this dissertation are also applicable to other applications in power systems.

Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 42: Analysis and Control System Techniques for Electric Power Systems, Part 2 of 4 covers the research studies on the significant advances in areas including economic operation of power systems and voltage and power control techniques. This book is composed of eight chapters and begins with a survey of the application of parallel processing to power system analysis as motivated by the requirement for faster computation. The next chapters deal with the issues of power system protection from a system point of view, the voltage stability phenomenon, and an overview of the techniques used in the reliability evaluation of large electric power systems. These chapters also look into the reliability assessment of bulk power systems, which are the composite of generation and high-voltage transmission, often called composite systems. These topics are followed by investigations of the potential of integer quadratic optimization to improve efficiency in a radial electric distribution system through the coordination of switched capacitors and regulators. Other chapters consider the issues of the optimal operation of a power system that are substantially complicated as a result of the large system scale nature of these issues. The final chapters explore the techniques for achieving requisite speed improvements that are essential to electric power systems and the problems on effective methods in hydro optimization. This book will be of value to electrical engineers, designers, and researchers.
