Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridge Superstructure deals with the behaviour of different types of bridge decks under different systems of loading. Mathematical modeling and the behaviour of different types of bridge decks are clearly explained. Solid slab, voided slab and skew slab bridge decks are detailed out for analysis and design. Box girder bridges is specially discussed for better understanding of its behaviour and its design. Special points relating to creep and shrinkage effects in continuous bridge decks are explained. Bridge bearings, expansion joints and appurtenances of different types are explained with respect to their place of use and their functions. A few methods of erection of bridge decks of simply supported spans or continuous spans are presented to give a good understanding of such possibilities.

Book excerpt: Transverse load distribution behavior amongst bridge girders is influenced by many parameters including girder material properties, spacing, skew, deck design, and stiffening element interactions. In order to simply and conservatively approximate the bridge superstructure load distribution between girders, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) LRFD Bridge Design Specifications contain load distribution factor (LDF) equations for many common bridge types. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) had recently developed a new design for bridge superstructures that utilizes a spread configuration of prestressed concrete slab beams. AASHTO does not contain LDFs for this type of bridge so the load sharing behavior of this superstructure must be investigated further. TxDOT has funded the Texas A&M University Transportation Institute (TTI) to design, model, construct, test, and analyze a full scale spread slab beam bridge. In addition to this testing, an existing slab beam bridge in Denison, Texas will be instrumented and observed for supplementary slab beam behavior data. To predict bridge behavior, computer models of the Riverside experimental bridge and of the Denison field bridge were developed using both the grillage and finite element methods of analysis. The experimental results from the Riverside and Denison bridges will not be collected by the conclusion of this thesis so a third bridge with existing experimental data, the Drehersville, Pennsylvania bridge, was also modeled for calibration purposes. The work presented by this thesis focuses on how to accurately model transverse load distribution relationships and LDFs for use in bridge design. The analysis covered is concentrated primarily on the grillage method, with the finite element analysis as part of the larger project scope. From this analysis it was determined that the grillage method was able to accurately model bridge LDFs as compared to FEM modeling and experimental results, for spread slab beam and spread box beam bridges. The critical loading configurations for all bridges placed two trucks side by side and as far to one edge of the bridge as possible. It was also determined that at an ultimate loading case, the load is distributed much more evenly across the deck than at service loading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the well established computer-aided method of grillage analogy as applied to analysis of bridge decks. The method, applicable to various types of bridge decks (such as slab bridges, T-beam bridges and box-girder bridges), can handle rigid or flexible support conditions, and right, skew or curved plan layouts. The procedure and recommendations for idealising the actual bridge decks and loadings into mathematical models are discussed. Two programs, given in ready-to-use form, along with descriptions of various subroutines, can analyse a variety of bridge decks accurately and obtain all the responses required in the design. Their uses are explained through worked-out examples. These programs, along with input-data and exhaustive output results of all the worked-out examples, are also available on a diskette and can be ordered seperately from the authors through the publisher. This will help those who do not want to type programs from the book and run into possible risk of errors. The book will be useful for the students, researchers, teachers, designers and consultants engaged in analysing, designing, vetting, tendering or constructing bridges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridge design codes provide a set of technical requirements for safe and acceptable design. However, several design requirements need evaluation and field verification to asses their accuracy. Those associated with the full-depth shear key joints in multi-beam decks, load distribution in highly skew continuous bridges, and permit load bridge rating are reviewed in the context. Multi-beam decks can be made by precast units that are post-tensioned together with shear keys and transverse post-tensioning. The performance of the longitudinal joints with regards to load transfer and water tightness is one of the design features of interest. To transfer load between the adjacent units, the joints are filled with grout material. The transverse post-tensioning stress is employed to prevent excessive opening of these joints. Live load tests on multi-beam bridge were performed to obtain actual load distribution data. The study presents the test results and an associated finite element analyses. A simplified method based upon grillage analogy is developed to quantify required transverse post-tensioning stresses in the longitudinal joints. The efficiency of the joints was evaluated by comparing with a hypothetical monolithic slab structure and by the distribution of loads in the transverse direction. The post-tensioning stresses as calculated according to the method were compared with the requirements of the AASHTO LRFD provisions. Estimation of the span and support moment is required to develop a realistic design for skew continuous bridges. Distribution factors recommended by the code provide convenience and simplistic methods to calculate the moments on bridge girders. Refined formulas for estimating the load distribution factors are provided in the current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. A considerable amount of literature is available on field verification studies of right angle steel girder bridges; however studies on highly skew bridges are relatively limited. Previous studies on highly skew bridges have verified the distribution characteristics either analytically or experimentally using prototype bridges. The current study presents a live load field test carried out on a 60-degree skew three-span continuous steel girder bridge. The results are used to derive quantitative information regarding the actual transverse load distribution characteristics of the bridge to asses the accuracy of the current methods. To account for the application of overloads, the LRFR permit load rating was modified by introducing the fatigue damage of overloads. The study used a modification factor referred to as the fatigue index to point to the damage causing effect of overloads. A method is developed to calculate the modification factor. The method considers the fatigue damage that may be caused by overloads as well as the stresses induced by normal traffic. The approach assumes that fatigue index for a specific overload is proportional to the total number of stress cycles required to increase the crack size to the crack threshold at stress induced by normal traffic. The number represents the overload stress cycles that would produce a crack size at which normal traffic stress cycle is able to contribute to the crack growth. The fatigue index as determined by the method reflects the severity of an overload and its potential for causing fatigue damage."--P. iii-iv.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The load distribution on a 48.5-ft. span timber deck-steel girder bridge built to the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation standard SS-4 requirements was investigated under two conditions. The first condition was concerned with the load distribution when the timber deck fasteners were tight and the second condition involved investigating the load distribution when the fasteners were loosened in several stages. The results of the study indicated that the live load stresses were of the same general order of magnitude and that the lateral load distribution was generally the same whether the deck plank fasteners were loose or tight. The load distribution factor currently used for the interior girders was found to be too high, whereas the procedure used for distribution of the load to the exterior girders was slightly low. It is recommended that consideration be given to using a load distribution factor of S for the evaluation of both the interior and exterior girders of timber deck-steel girder bridges similar to the one investigated. Compared to current procedures, this modification would result in a 20% reduction in the live load distribution to the interior girders and a 28% increase in the distribution to the exterior girders.
