Book Synopsis Most Scandalous Woman by : Myrna Ivonne Wallace Fuentes
Download or read book Most Scandalous Woman written by Myrna Ivonne Wallace Fuentes and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926 a young Peruvian woman picked up a gun, wrested her infant daughter from her husband, and liberated herself from the constraints of a patriarchal society. Magda Portal, a poet and journalist, would become one of Latin America’s most successful and controversial politicians. In this richly nuanced portrayal of Portal, historian Myrna Ivonne Wallace Fuentes chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of this prominent twentieth-century revolutionary within the broader history of leftist movements, gender politics, and literary modernism in Latin America. An early member of bohemian circles in Lima, La Paz, and Mexico City, Portal distinguished herself as the sole female founder of the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA). A leftist but non-Communist movement, APRA would dominate Peru’s politics for five decades. Through close analysis of primary sources, including Portal’s own poetry, correspondence, and other writings, Most Scandalous Woman illuminates Portal’s pivotal work in creating and leading APRA during its first twenty years, as well as her efforts to mobilize women as active participants in political and social change. Despite her successes, Portal broke with APRA in 1950 under bitter circumstances. Wallace Fuentes analyzes how sexism in politics interfered with Portal’s political ambitions, explores her relationships with family members and male peers, and discusses the ramifications of her scandalous love life. In charting the complex trajectory of Portal’s life and career, Most Scandalous Woman reveals what moves people to become revolutionaries, and the gendered limitations of their revolutionary alliances, in an engrossing narrative that brings to life Latin American revolutionary politics.

Book Synopsis Centenary Subjects by : Shawn McDaniel
Download or read book Centenary Subjects written by Shawn McDaniel and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centenary Subjects examines the ideological debates and didactic exercises in subject formation during the centenary era of independence (the decade of the 1910s)—the peak of arielismo—and proposes a new reading of the arielista archive that brings into focus the racial anxieties, epistemological and spiritual fissures, and iconoclastic agendas that structure, and at times smother, the ethos of that era. Arielismo takes its name from José Enrique Rodó’s foundational essay Ariel (1900), a wide‑ranging gospel dedicated to Latin American youth that incited a cultural awakening under the banner of the spirit throughout the Americas at an ominous juncture—when the US co-opted the Cuban War of Independence in 1898, effectively rebranding it as the Spanish‑American War. Rodó’s optimistic message of transcendence as an antidote to the encroaching empire quickly became one of the most pervasive and malleable paradigms of regional empowerment, reverberating throughout a range of Latin Americanist projects in the twentieth and twenty‑first centuries. Centenary Subjects recovers a series of important but understudied essays penned by arielista writers, radicals, pedagogues, prophets, and politicians of diverse stripes in the early twentieth century, and analyzes how, under the auspices of the arielista platform, young people emerged as historical subjects invested with unprecedented cultural capital, increasing political power, and an urgent mandate to break with the past and transform the sociopolitical and cultural landscape of their countries. But their respective designs harbor racial, epistemological, aesthetic, and anarchistic strains that bring into sharper relief the conflicting signals that the centenary subject had to parse with respect to race, reason, and rupture.

Book Synopsis The Argentine Novel by : Myron I. Lichtblau
Download or read book The Argentine Novel written by Myron I. Lichtblau and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 1182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argentine Novel is a comprehensive bibliography of the Argentine novel from its beginnings in 1788, the year Miguel Learte wrote Las aventuras de Learte, until 1990, when such authors as Osvaldo Soriano and Luisa Valenzuela published their popular novels. In addition to novels, the bibliography includes works which may be considered under the rubric of short novel, such as "novela corta," which, in spite of its short length, partakes more of the novel than the short story in its basic literary conception, plot development, and narrative scope. Where possible, all editions of each novel or work are cited, as well as translations into foreign languages, and citations may be followed by one or more critical commentaries or select bibliographies of additional studies on the work or its author. This exhaustive work serves as the definitive guide to this genre in Argentine literature. A must for all collections that support comparative literature studies, Hispanic studies, or as a guide to popular reading.
