Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devastating impact of wildfire on residents living in fire prone areas has become an all too common media story in recent years. While significant efforts have been made to inform residents in fire prone areas of the risk, it is not clear to what extent property owners are taking action to reduce risk. Likewise, we know little about what factors are related to taking action to reduce risk. In an effort to explore these issues further and to better characterize the wildland urban interface (WUI) residents of Larimer County, Colorado, a general population survey of WUI residents was implemented. The survey was designed to provide information regarding knowledge, concern, and activities related to wildfire and wildfire risk mitigation. Survey results suggest that word had gotten out about wildfire risk as most survey respondents knew about the risk when they decided to purchase a home in a fire prone area. Likewise, survey respondents expressed concern that a wildfire would damage their home or property. Completing more wildfire risk mitigation actions was found to be related to first-hand experience with wildfire and perceptions of wildfire risk.

Book excerpt: "This data set provides the unique ability to examine changes in attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors over time by presenting a paired household data set from surveys conducted in 2007 and 2010. Overall, we see significant increases in overall concern about wildfire risk and changes in perceptions of likely outcomes associated with wildfire events. The data from this survey, along with the companion data from Boulder County (See RN 57 TBA) demonstrate the value of collecting data beyond the community case-study scale. While we see some consistency across the two counties over the two survey periods, we also see some differences in trajectory in the responses from the two counties - the extent to which the differences are related to policy-level differences between the counties, the unfolding of major wildfire events in one county and not the other, or a combination of these and other factors remains to be seen but provides interesting avenues for future inquiry. Most notable, perhaps, is that we see that survey respondents are aware of wildfire risk and are continuing to take action to reduce risk and are not simply passive in the face of escalating risk"--Page 20.

Book excerpt: Over the past 50 years, Colorado has experienced an increase in the number and size of wildfires on its public and private lands. Nationwide, expenditures on wildfire suppression have increased for decades and now are measured in the billions of tax dollars. Current trends in climate changes, fuel accumulation from past wildfire suppression, and expansion of the wildland-urban interface (WUI), which means more development within areas of heightened wildfire potential, all suggest that continued increases in the costs of wildfires are likely.

Book excerpt: Residents in the wildland-urban interface can play an important role in reducing wildfires negative effects by performing wildfire risk mitigation on their properties. This report offers insight into the wildfire risk mitigation activities and related considerations such as attitudes, experiences, and concern about wildfire, for residents of the Telluride Fire Protection District of San Miguel County, Colorado. Data come from a social survey and parcel-level rapid wildfire risk assessments administered by the West Region Wildfire Council. Results are presented both in graphical form and as detailed summary statistics (in appendices). As we recognize that results from similar surveys and assessments in other communities might differ, these linked datasets contribute to a broader effort to understand decisions about wildfire risk mitigation on private property. Results can facilitate long-term monitoring, management, and educational practices concerning the mitigation of wildfire risk in wildland-urban interface communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compilation and summary of four research studies is presented. They were aimed at developing a theoretical and practical understanding of homeowners' attitudes and behaviors in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in relation to the threat from wildland fires. Individual studies focused on models and methods that measured (1) value orientations (patterns of basic beliefs) toward natural processes, (2) attitudes toward wildland fire policies, and (3) behavioral intentions to adopt defensible space activities or support agency policies/actions. This report presents some of the key findings from these studies, highlights the practical consequences of adopting a theory-based approach to understanding wildland fire management in urbanized areas, and suggests strategies for successful wildfire-prevention education programs.
