This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Thoughts on RNA and the Origin of Life The full impact of the essential role of the nucleic acids in biological systems was forcefully demonstrated by the research community in the 1950s. Although Avery and his collaborators had identified DNA as the genetic material responsible for the transformation of bacteria in 1944, it was not until the early 1950s that the Hershey-Chase experiments provided a more direct demonstration of this role. Finally, the structural DNA double helix proposed by Watson and Crick in 1953 clearly created a structural frame work for the role of DNA as both information carrier and as a molecule that could undergo the necessary replication needed for daughter cells. Research continued by Kornberg and his colleagues in the mid-1950s emphasized the biochemistry and enzymology of DNA replication. At the same time, there was a growing interest in the role of RNA. The 1956 dis covery by David Davies and myself showed that polyadenylic acid and polyuridylic acid could form a double-helical RNA molecule but that it differed somewhat from DN A A large number of experiments were subsequendy carried out with synthetic polyribonucleotides which illustrated that RNA could form even more complicated helical structures in which the specificity of hydrogen bonding was the key element in determining the molecular conformation. Finally, in I960,1 could show that it was possible to make a hybrid helix.
Book Synopsis In Search of the Physical Basis of Life by : Gilbert Ling
Download or read book In Search of the Physical Basis of Life written by Gilbert Ling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is highly probable that the ability to distinguish between living and nonliving objects was already well developed in early prehuman animals. Cognizance of the difference between these two classes of objects, long a part of human knowledge, led naturally to the division of science into two categories: physics and chemistry on the one hand and biology on the other. So deep was this belief in the separateness of physics and biology that, as late as the early nineteenth century, many biologists still believed in vitalism, according to which living phenomena fall outside the confines of the laws of physics. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that Carl Ludwig, Hermann von Helmholz, Emil DuBois-Reymond, and Ernst von Briicke inaugurated a physicochem ical approach to physiology in which it was recognized clearly that one set of laws must govern the properties and behavior of all matter, living and nonliving . . The task of a biologist is like trying to solve a gigantic multidimensional crossword fill in the right physical concepts at the right places. The biologist depends on puzzle: to the maturation of the science of physics much as the crossword solver depends on a large and correct vocabulary. The solver of crossword puzzles needs not just a good vocabulary but a special vocabulary. Words like inee and oke are vitally useful to him but are not part of the vocabulary of an English professor.

Book Synopsis The Evolution of Metabolic Function by : Robert P. Mortlock
Download or read book The Evolution of Metabolic Function written by Robert P. Mortlock and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-05-20 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evolution of Metabolic Function presents comprehensive discussions on a variety of topics that will interest scientists and students studying the evolution of enzyme activities, the evolution of enzymatic pathways, and the evolution and development of metabolic functions. Laboratory experiments designed to develop new enzyme activities and new metabolic pathways are discussed. The most recent techniques comparing protein and gene structures are used to analyze and discuss the evolution and development of such metabolic functions as the bacterial phosphoenolpyruvate:sugar phosphotransferase system, the mandelate pathway of microorganisms, bacterial alcohol metabolism, and certain microbial amino acid biosynthetic pathways. The book also includes some unique speculations regarding the origin of early Archaean cells and the prebiotic evolution of complex molecules.
