Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Some Living Religions of the East written by Sydney Cave and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Study of Some Living Religions of the East is a textbook by author Sydney Cave, who lived amongst Hindus for many years of his life and intimately studied other Eastern religions. He intended this work to be a beginner's guide to the study of non-Christian religions. Cave has divided this textbook into five sections, each discussing a separate religion or religions. Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Islam are all explored in depth in this book. The author follows a similar path for each section of the book. Each religion is introduced with a focus on its history and core beliefs. Important religious figures are discussed, with a focus on the spiritual significance of these individuals. The societies where these religions are practiced are also analyzed, helping to add some much needed social context to the discussion. As a primer on the non-Christian religions, Sydney Cave's book is largely a success. The reader with little or no knowledge of the religions discussed will certainly find themselves with a greater understanding of the world's religions upon conclusion of this book. The author's style is eminently readable, with clear, concise prose lending an air of authority to the text. His section on Hinduism, the religion in which Cave is most knowledgeable, is probably the highlight of the book and is certainly the most thorough. An Introduction to the Study of Some Living Religions of the East is a terrific guide for those interested in learning about the world's religions. Any student of religious studies will find this to be a valuable text, as will anybody else with an interest in learning more about the belief systems of the people that surround them. 'At various times and in various ways', that is what this book is all about. Just how did God 'speak' to our ancestors? How did God make an abiding presence know in creation? It is an attempt to penetrate the varied manifestations of this Presence in the world and the religious sensitivities of humanity that help make us aware of this presence. This study revolves around the origins and ideas of the world's major living religions of the eastern half of the world. The different ways that eastern religions perceive the reality of the 'world of the sacred' is our focus.

Book Synopsis Living Our Religions by : Anjana Narayan

Book excerpt: The population of the South Asian Diaspora in the US is over 2.5 million people. Yet in a post 9/11 climate of opinion, little is known about this group beyond images of Muslim and Hindu fundamentalists and terrorists. This is particularly true of women where simplistic assumptions about veils and subordination obscure the voices of the women themselves. Rarely are Hindu and Muslim American women—many of whom are social workers, physicians, lawyers, academics, students, homemakers—asked about their everyday lives and religious beliefs. Living our Religions brings out these hidden stories from South Asian American women of Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian and Nepali origin. Their accounts show how diverse and culturally dynamic religious practices emerge within the intersection of histories and politics of specific locales. The authors describe the race, gender, and ethnic boundaries they encounter; they also document how they resist and challenge these boundaries. Living our Religions cuts through the myths and ethnocentrism of popular portrayals to reveal the vibrancy, courage and agency of an invisible minority. Book Synopsis Unity and Diversity in World's Living Religions by : Muhammad Hedayetullah
Download or read book Unity and Diversity in World's Living Religions written by Muhammad Hedayetullah and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muhammad Hedayetullah has spent much of his life and career studying the religions of the world, and he has come to a very simple but informed conclusion: all world religions are basically the same. Certainly, they are spread across separate geographical areas. Yes, the deities of different religions are called by different names. And yet, there is a unity of purpose among them all. Unity and Diversity in World's Living Religions is one man's educated journey through the religions of the world. By focusing on the living religions of today, he has derived a conclusive level of similarity underlying every culture known to modern man. From the deities worshipped by Hinduism, to Confucianism and even Christianity, all cultures seek a connection with a higher power for strength, guidance, and love. Hedayetullah's conclusions are remarkable in this day and age, especially with religious wars and prejudices based solely on the adverse beliefs of the so-called "enemy." What would the world be like if we were to realize and accept that we are all one people, under one higher power, seeking to worship together? It is not a simple feat, but it starts with a solitary insight: no matter where we are or what we believe, we are one.

Book excerpt: Carl Hermann Voss has succeeded in presenting a very knowledgeable and comprehensive, and at the same time highly readable, account of the world's major religions: their historical development, key personages, and basic tenets. He writes with clarity, insight, and sympathetic understanding. I found this to be an engrossing and illuminating book--Dr. Avraham Harman, The Hebrew University of JerusalemLiving Religions of the World: Our Search for Meaning is both reliable and readable, an excellent combination commending it to students and educated laymen alike. The living faiths, offering real alternatives in a world grown small and compelling every thinking person to make a personal choice, are presented with sympathy and scholarship. There is a fine concluding summary of the major issues of conscience and decision in a generation which displays an upsurge of religious interest frequently along non-traditional paths.--Dr. Franklin H. Littell, Temple University, Philadelphia, PADr. Voss's important scholarly work has always been marked by extraordinary sensitivity combined with wide erudition. This marvelous book shows his many admirers anew how our common search for meaning finds distinct but complementary expression in the major religions of the world. A lifetime of scholarly reflection renders his book an enriching experience for us all.--Father David Tracy, University of Chicago
