Download or read book Living in Two Worlds written by Dylan Emmons and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dylan Emmons has always lived his life in two worlds. Diagnosed with Asperger's at the age of six, his school days were spent struggling to overcome the sensory and social hurdles that made fitting in with his classmates in the 'real world' so hard. An aspiring social chameleon, he attempted to blend in, despite his hidden other world of Asperger's. This book tells the story of his attempt, with the hindsight gained in adult life that it is better to spend energy learning to be happy, than learning to be 'normal'. By describing the two conflicting worlds of his childhood, Dylan Emmons reveals the reasons behind the actions, mood swings and awkwardness of children on the autism spectrum that can often appear mysterious and unprovoked to neurotypical family members, friends, teachers and professionals.

Download or read book Living in Two Worlds written by Sadik Aboagye and published by . This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a difficult, rural existence in Ghana to the promise of life in the United States, Living in Two Worlds shows how the necessities of life can be found in perseverance and faith. With inspiring and encouraging stories that chronicle his and his family's journey, author Sadik Aboagye shares for posterity and for insight both the contrasts and comparisons of life on two sides of the globe. "The author offers an impressionistic view of rural life in Ghana with its concomitant challenges. With some of us, it is a reminder of the good old days in the village where basic amenities like good schooling, electricity, pipe-borne water, and clinics were virtually nonexistent-and yet where life was normal and joyful. It equally serves as a useful resource for all those who never tasted rural life but grew up in the cities of Africa and other countries. Though the author went through myriads of problems and challenges with school, finances, fatal accidents, diseases, frustrations, and perilous times on the seas aboard a ship from Nigeria to Ghana-as well as many other heartbreaking events in his life-God protected him and his family in their journey through life. It is also an encouraging story of how maximization and utilization of available natural and human resources can propel the individual and society to greater heights. I am deeply honored to write these few lines about this timely, needed, and informative book." -Dr. Gabriel Amoateng-Boahen, Professional Staff Chaplain, University of Chicago Medical Center

Book excerpt: From Tyler Henry, clairvoyant and star of E!’s hit reality series Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, comes Between Two Worlds, a captivating memoir about his journey as a medium thus far. “Dying doesn’t mean having to say goodbye.” Tyler Henry discovered his gift for communicating with the departed when he was just ten years old. After experiencing a sudden, accurate premonition of his grandmother’s death—what Tyler would later describe as his first experience of “knowingness”—life would never be the same. Now in his twenties, Tyler is a renowned, practicing medium, star of the smash hit E! reality show, Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, and go-to clairvoyant of celebrities, VIP’s, and those simply looking for closure and healing. He has worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Khloe Kardashian, Amber Rose, Margaret Cho, Jaime Pressly, and Monica Potter. Despite struggling to accept his rare talent, Tyler grew to embrace it, and finally found the courage to share it with—and ultimately change—the world. For the first time, Tyler pulls back the curtain on living life as a medium in his first memoir, in which he fearlessly opens up about discovering his gift as an adolescent, what it’s truly like to communicate with those who have passed, the power of symbolism in his readings, and the lessons we can learn from our departed loved ones. With unparalleled honesty, Tyler discusses how his complex and fascinating gift has changed his perception of the afterlife, and more importantly, how readings can impact our relationships with our closest friends and family once they’re gone.

Book Synopsis Living in Two Worlds by : M. Vera Buhrmann
Download or read book Living in Two Worlds written by M. Vera Buhrmann and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some white South Africans have grown up with the sound of African singing accompanied by drumming in their ears at night. It stirred feelings of fear, of mystery, and fascination, but also of avoidance - "Leave it alone, it is not for us." They were told by their elders. And so they knew nothing about the aim, purpose and use of singing, dancing and drumming in the life of the native African - it was brushed aside as meer "beer parties." The white South African knew and understood even less about these as methods of healing and bringing comfort to body and mind. Yet for many the fascination remained, ad did the mystery. No cultural group can exist meaningfully without its living myths, rituals, and ceremonies. Moreover, in southern Africa the coexisting racial groups have a unique opportunity of being mutually enriched and fertilized by exploring, accepting and understanding on another's cultural beliefs and practices. This book aims at improving such understanding, and at building a bridge of empathy between "two worlds" the Western way of experiencing life, which is largely rational, intellectual and technological, and the world of the traditional Xhosa, which is primarily intuitive, non-rational and oriented towards symbols and images. The author writes about her research work among the indigenous Xhosa healers and sets out to show that much of what is commonly called "the witchdoctor's magic" is not magical in the usual sense of the word, but is intuitively based on sound principles of depth psychology widely practiced in the West. Living in Two Worlds is required reading for anyone interested in the social, political and psychological realities of southern Africa.

Book Synopsis Between Two Worlds by : Zainab Salbi
Download or read book Between Two Worlds written by Zainab Salbi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zainab Salbi was eleven years old when her father was chosen to be Saddam Hussein's personal pilot and her family's life was grafted onto his. Her mother, the beautiful Alia, taught her daughter the skills she needed to survive. A plastic smile. Saying yes. Burying in boxes in her mind the horrors she glimpsed around her. "Learn to erase your memories," she instructed. "He can read eyes." In this richly visual memoir, Salbi describes tyranny as she saw it - through the eyes of a privileged child, a rebellious teenager, a violated wife, and ultimately a public figure fighting to overcome the skill that once kept her alive: silence. Between Two Worlds is a riveting quest for truth that deepens our understanding of the universal themes of power, fear, sexual subjugation, and the question one generation asks the one before it: How could you have let this happen to us?

Book Synopsis Between Two Worlds by : Elizabeth Marquardt
Download or read book Between Two Worlds written by Elizabeth Marquardt and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there really such a thing as a “good divorce”? Determined to uncover the truth, Elizabeth Marquardt—herself a child of divorce—conducted, with Professor Norval Glenn, a pioneering national study of children of divorce, surveying 1,500 young adults from both divorced and intact families between 2001 and 2003. In Between Two Worlds, she weaves the findings of that study together with powerful, unsentimental stories of the childhoods of young people from divorced families. The hard truth, she says, is that while divorce is sometimes necessary, even amicable divorces sow lasting inner conflict in the lives of children. When a family breaks in two, children who stay in touch with both parents must travel between two worlds, trying alone to reconcile their parents’ often strikingly different beliefs, values, and ways of living. Authoritative, beautifully written, and alive with the voices of men and women whose lives were changed by divorce, Marquardt’s book is essential reading for anyone who grew up “between two worlds.” “Makes a persuasive case against the culture of casual divorce.” —Washington Post “A poignant narrative of her own experience . . . Marquardt says she and other young adults who grew up in the divorce explosion of the 1970s and 1980s are still dealing with wounds that they could never talk about with their parents.”—Chicago Tribune
