Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BRANCHES OF THE TREE OF LIFE is the first comprehensive volume of poems by Abiodun Oyewole, many of them never before published. Oyewole's poems are powerful, often political, always lyrical and profoundly moving. Over the course of his forty year career and his long affliation with The Last Poets, Oyewole is one of several poets credited for liberating American poetry by creating open, vocal, spontaneous, energetic and uncensored vernacular verse that paved the way for spoken word and Hip Hop. Using the spiritual, the sacred and the mystical, Oyewole often turns to the tree as a symbol of change and growth. His poetry rebranches into different directions, becoming grandeur in its proportions, and more complexly diversified in its structure. BRANCHES OF THE TREE OF LIFE is a living testament to a stunning career that confirms Abiodun Oyewole's place at the forefront of poetic achievement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been a profound, personal journey across time, space and dimensions. Most of the poems have been given to me directly from my Spirit Guides, their words, ideas and concepts have not been altered in anyway. My role has only been to transcribe their messages, I am just the person holding the pencil. Recently, I was asked to read a few poems to an audience from Walking Two Worlds. After reading them, I realized these poems should not be read in an audience setting. The poems and drawings are so interrelated that one misses out experiencing the totality of both art forms. This book of poems is a journey that needs to be experienced and enjoyed by each person on an individual personal basis. As with all of my writing and drawings, my goal is to teach compassion, broaden narrow minds and motivate people to accept all peoples for who they are regardless of culture, race, religion and/ or sexual orientation. If only one person's life or ideas are changed in a positive way as a result of reading Walking Two Worlds I will consider it an outstanding accomplishment.

Book excerpt: Love does live alone; it chooses itself – always. While it is often dismissed as a weakness, it is so powerfully pervasive that it trumps all else. We feel love but what does love feel? This book is about love that is felt and also about the love that is its own being. It is a compilation of prose poems and is meant for lovers of poetry, art, and aesthetics. It is written from the perspective of a woman who chooses to be vulnerable; yet in control. Each prose poem is complemented with an illustration – an evocation of myriad emotions encircled in literature inspired kaleidoscopic creations.

Book excerpt: This is a book of poetry, designed to tell the story of a human life. The subject matter of the poems is diversified at first sight. There are poems dedicated to friends, and those dedicated to family. There is an homage to philosophy and one to the blues. The first poem is meta-poetical; its subject matter is poetry itself. Many of the poems are intended to reflect spirituality. Although a central theme in many of them is Judaism, the spirituality crosses boundaries of "organized" religions. One poem is an obvious exercise in Zen. Another is spoken from the point of view of a Native American living in central Florida. Yet another might have come from Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. Ultimately, the book is quite personal in nature. This is why each chapter begins with a set of annotations. They are designed to reflect the author's growth and his life's journey, from a childhood that started with pain and without love, to a rediscovery of family, and to love and wholeness.

Book excerpt: Foreign Engine in Flight is a collection of 60 poems written over a period of a year endeavoring towards unity consciousness and embracing oneself as a divine being. The poet’s fundamental belief that humans are born to share, to relate and grow collectively, lead her to expressing herself in the form of this poetry book. The poems shed light into the power of self-liberation, self-evaluation and self-resurrection, and the coming of alignment to one’s true purpose of life. This book is her celebration of life, the chance to live through all its brightest and darkest days, her lucid dreams while awake and asleep, and the universe through her lens.

Book excerpt: Poet Lisy has taken topics, matters, concept and ideas from life and nature, common to each one but woven a magic around them with words, verse, rhymes and feelings. If anything pleases our mind due to its perfect blend in design, colour combination, lighting, structure and that perfection is poetry. Lisy has succeeded in providing to all age group as a sculptor silently carving his fully developed sculpture mentioned in the title poem Beneath the River. The present Hi Tech. swipe generation and internet whiz kids hardly know what poets and poetry do to our society and their contribution towards humanities. In fact words are magic which can heal, generate life and console all distressed minds. The contribution of Lisy is highly appreciable, as she exalted the status of Indian community in Kuwait, by writing this book in the dominant language of the world, hence accessible to all people and proved that language is not a barrier. The 51 poems in this book touch many instances in our daily life, or we see diversified lives, unnoticed by common people. The merit of a poet lies when he/she picks up subjects from life. The first poem The Inheritor is a best example of black comedy. Other poems Turtles Life, A Chef , Unseen sobbings will really melt the hearts of the readers. A Twilight, Four winds, First Flower of the Spring and Mother Nature show a poets passion in mingling with nature. She also expresses her concern over shortness of life and the struggles of soul after death. Going through the poems, we can see the transformation of the poet as Philosopher, Mother, Preacher, Spiritual Leader, Benevolent person and Guide. This book is really an asset with its content and matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starred Review from Booklist: "This robust volume is a testament to the fortitude of a great American poet's work... [a] landmark collection." From the Introduction by Terry Tempest Williams: "Jim Harrison...was among the great ones—an elevated soul in all his unruliness who favored his senses and courted the wild on the page and in the world. His was a storied life that loomed large, and we are the beneficiaries. 'Such a powerful wounded poet—wrote as if he had to sing with a cut throat . . . and he did have to sing,' said Jorie Graham." Jim Harrison: Complete Poems is the definitive collection from one of America’s iconic writers. Introduced by activist and naturalist writer Terry Tempest Williams, this tour de force contains every poem Harrison published over his fifty-year career, as well as a section of previously unpublished "Last Poems." Here are the nature-based lyrics of his early work, the high-velocity ghazals, a harrowing prose-poem “correspondence” with a Russian suicide, the riverine suites, fearless meditations inspired by the Zen monk Crazy Cloud, and a joyous conversation in haiku-like gems with friend and fellow poet Ted Kooser. Weaving throughout these 1000 pages are Harrison’s legendary passions and appetites, his love songs and lamentations, and a clarion call to pay attention to the life you are actually living. Jim Harrison: Complete Poems confirms that Jim Harrison is a talented storyteller with a penetrating eye for details, or as Publishers Weeklycalled him, “an untrammeled renegade genius... a poet talking to you instead of around himself, while doing absolutely brilliant and outrageous things with language.” NOTE:Jim Harrison: Complete Poems also appears as a three-volume box set. Print run limited to 750 copies. Each volume is introduced by a different writer: Colum McCann, Joy Williams, and John Freeman. The box set retails for $85 and ISBN is 9781556596414.

Book excerpt: Few poets have as much to tell us about the intricate relationship between the African American past and present as Jay Wright. His poems weave a rich fabric of personal history using diverse materials drawn from African, Native American, and European sources. Scholarly, historical, intuitive, and emotional, his work explores territories in which rituals of psychological and spiritual individuation find a new synthesis in the construction of cultural values. Never an ideologue but always a poet of vision, he shows us a way to rejoice and strengthen ourselves in our common humanity. Here, together for the first time, are Wright's previously published collections -- The Homecoming Singer (1971), Soothsayers and Omens (1976), Explications/Interpretations (1984), Dimensions of History (1976), The Double Invention of Komo (1980), Elaine's Book (1988), and Boleros (1991) -- along with the new poems of Transformations (1997). By presenting Wright's work as a whole, this collection reveals the powerful consistency of his theme -- a spiritual or intellectual quest for personal development -- as each book builds solidly upon the previous one. Wright examines history from a multicultural perspective, attempting to conquer a sense of exclusion -- from society and his own cultural identity -- and find solace and accord by linking American society to African traditions. He believes that a poem must articulate the vital rhythms of the culture it depicts and is dedicated to a pursuit of poetic forms that embody the cadence of African American culture. In "The Albuquerque Graveyard", he offers a poignant elegy to victims of slavery's Middle Passage and also reveals the purpose of his poetry.to the Black limbo, an unwritten history of our own tensions. The dead lie here in a hierarchy of small defeats. Defying characterization, Wright has experimented with voices, languages, cultures, and forms not normally associated with African American literature. He is well schooled in the cultures of West Africa, Europe, and the Americas, and -- true to his New Mexican birth -- he is a powerful synthesizer of human experience. Transfigurations reveals Wright to be a man of profound knowledge and a poet of exalted verbal intensity.

Book excerpt: The longer we live the more we experience and understand Poetry has been one of the greatest expressions for revealing and capturing some of the heartfelt and meaningful moments and feelings of life, past and present. This is a genuine attempt to bring poetry and prose back into focus with a newer and lighter appeal. The imaginative variations presented respect the technicalities of English poetry and prose. Clear and logical arrangements certainly have been utilized throughout to stimulate sentiment, emotion and interest. The contents are diversified and depict tales of lasting romantic love and provide food for thought, Many of the poems touch on a few current viewpoints and expose man's conflicts with his own being and that of nature and progress. The familiar unmeasured rhythm of prose portrays legendary, theoretical, philosophical or hypothetical events. Life is full of unforgettable or unusual incidents. Some go beyond the normal expected pattern, giving our logic a different outlook. These poems are concise and condensed epilogues fused to form and vivify related moments in the reader's mind. Every verse endeavors to establish a decipherable and edifying word picture. Overused analogies or metaphors in poetry have served their purpose in a slower paced and unlearned society. Twentieth Century American English has become a fast moving, direct to the point and multiple meaning language. Interpretations of analogies in today's times if overused, would possibly become distorted and the author's intended meaning could be lost. Even though the poems contained in this volume project a whole range of concepts, one certainly doesn't need an oral interpreter or translator of literature to understand them. Perhaps a few poems included can be set to song, but most consist of lengthy metrical meters which were used to capture detailed truths and thoughts. For some reason not known by me, man constantly overlooks the connection between rhythmic-rhyming to memory and human thought patterns and the most successful method of rote learning. It's apparent when every line in a poem or song are often long remembered at all learning levels and with the exception of catchy phrases or quotes the exact details and wording of other written works are generally forgotten . Writing poetry became a labor of love and passion for me, a secret retreat from being a wife (thirty-nine years) and Mother of four sons and one daughter. My family and friends were very supportive and I hope my contribution will serve as an inspiration to others who have marvelous reflections to share.
