Book excerpt: They were both twenty-something's living productive and successful lives when all of a sudden they were both struck by different types of brain injuries. Kara suffered a massive stroke, and Chris was in a coma that left him paralyzed after a bout with meningitis and encephalitis. Despite facing tough odds, the two spent countless hours in therapy, tirelessly working to regain control and triumph over their brain injuries. Little did they know that when they met in speech therapy they would instantly bond, fall in love, and get married within a couple of years. Despite being told they would not return to their previously productive lifestyle, this is the true story of Kara and Chris's personal and combined efforts to return to a "normal" life. A big lesson the two learned while recovering is that while you may look normal on the outside, brain injuries affect you every day for the rest of your life. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, bumps and bruises on the outside may disappear over time, but the damage on the inside of the brain is always there. Through their recovery the two have learned to adapt to their new brains while taking it one day at a time. Recovery and rehabilitation remains a constant in their lives. Inspired by each other, the two would like to share their stories in hopes that it may have a positive impact on brain injury survivors, caretakers, friends, and family members. Kara Ellsworth and Chris Russo are living happily together with perhaps a full brain between the two of them in Sacramento, CA. Working as a RN, Kara continues to pursue her goal of helping as many people as she can. Chris is busy working in his shop, establishing himself as the best cobbler in the Sacramento area. In their free time you can find them relaxing, watching movies, traveling in small spurts, and taking care of their small animal sanctuary, which includes two rescue dogs, turtles, eels, and several fish.

Book excerpt: About 10 years after Jake Band’s accident, an emergency room doctor told him that due to all of his post-accident accomplishments, he was one in a billion. The number of zeros increased upon every achievement. Since then, he has graduated college, gotten married, and much more. In addition to the things Band learned in rehab and in the “real world”, Being-Here also includes information he acquired from college, other survivors, and plenty of graduate school research in rehabilitation journals. Being-Here is about facing your new world and life after surviving your TBI. Nobody, outside of the circle of survivors, can possibly have a clue what your life is like now. Band explains the unique things he did to face his new world. This was not only done with the hope that it could help you face similar, but unique deficits, but Band’s purpose for writing Being-Here was to convince you not to give up, even if people, such as “rehabilitation professionals”, pre-accident “friends”, and even family members give up on you and/or your future. Being-Here is a place to go for encouragement, to hear or read some positive words, and to find some of the needed fuel for your life-long journey and discovery.

Book excerpt: Head Cases takes us into the dark side of the brain in an astonishing sequence of stories, at once true and strange, from the world of brain damage. Michael Paul Mason is one of an elite group of experts who coordinate care in the complicated aftermath of tragic injuries that can last a lifetime. On the road with Mason, we encounter survivors of brain injuries as they struggle to map and make sense of the new worlds they inhabit. Underlying each of these survivors' stories is an exploration of the brain and its mysteries. When injured, the brain must figure out how to heal itself, reorganizing its physiology in order to do the job. Mason gives us a series of vivid glimpses into brain science, the last frontier of medicine, and we come away in awe of the miracles of the brain's workings and astonished at the fragility of the brain and the sense of self, life, and order that resides there. Head Cases "[achieves] through sympathy and curiosity insight like that which pulses through genuine literature" (The New York Sun); it is at once illuminating and deeply affecting.

Book excerpt: A fascinating, darkly funny comeback story of learning to live with a broken mind after a near-fatal traumatic brain injury—from the acclaimed author of The Hike “Drew Magary has produced a remarkable account of his journey, one that is filled with terror, tenderness, beauty, and grace.”—David Grann, bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon Drew Magary, fan-favorite Defector and former Deadspin columnist, is known for his acerbic takes and his surprisingly nuanced chronicling of his own life. But in The Night the Lights Went Out, he finds himself far out of his depths. On the night of the 2018 Deadspin Awards, he suffered a mysterious fall that caused him to smash his head so hard on a cement floor that he cracked his skull in three places and suffered a catastrophic brain hemorrhage. For two weeks, he remained in a coma. The world was gone to him, and him to it. In his long recovery from his injury, including understanding what his family and friends went through as he lay there dying, coming to terms with his now permanent disabilities, and trying to find some lesson in this cosmic accident, he leaned on the one sure thing that he knows and that didn't leave him—his writing. Drew takes a deep dive into what it meant to be a bystander to his own death and figuring out who this new Drew is: a Drew that doesn't walk as well, doesn't taste or smell or see or hear as well, and a Drew that is often failing as a husband and a father as he bounces between grumpiness, irritability, and existential fury. But what's a good comeback story without heartbreak? Eager to get back what he lost, Drew experiences an awakening of a whole other kind in this incredibly funny, medically illuminating, and heartfelt memoir.
