"It was enough," he exclaimed, "to make a sound man sick, to be carried in a bed as she had been, much more her, whose impatient and unquiet spirits heapeth upon her far greater indisposition of body." It was agreed that she must tarry at Barnet till better able to bear the journey, and on April 1 she was removed to the mansion of Thomas Conyers, Esq., at East Barnet, at a rent of twenty shillings per week. There was paid at her removal from the inn at Bamet three pounds for broken glasses and rewards to the meaner servants and divers persons who took pains in waiting on her company. There was also paid to the servants of Mr. Conyers' house, and sundry persons who helped to make clean the house for her reception, three pounds fifteen shillings. There was also paid to Mathias Milward, one of the Prince of Vales's chaplains, five pounds for his pains in attending the Lady Arabella to preach and read prayers to her during her abode at East Barnet. This was two months and seven days, and the sum of two hundred pounds was paid into her own hands from the king for furnishing herself with all things necessary, in contemplation of her long journey to Durham.1 The Bishop of Durham had departed towards his own diocese, leaving Lady Arabella in the care of Sir James Crofts. She continued to write humble petitions to the king for her liberation, and also to the lord of the council.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final book of the Tudor series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory features one of the most famous women in history, Lady Jane Grey, and her two sisters, each of whom dared to defy her queen. Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days. Her father and his allies crowned her instead of the dead king’s half-sister Mary Tudor, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her throne, and locked Jane in the Tower of London. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner’s block, where Jane transformed her father’s greedy power-grab into tragic martyrdom. “Learn you to die,” was the advice Jane wrote to her younger sister Katherine, who has no intention of dying. She intends to enjoy her beauty and her youth and fall in love. But she is heir to the insecure and infertile Queen Mary and then to her sister Queen Elizabeth, who will never allow Katherine to marry and produce a Tudor son. When Katherine’s pregnancy betrays her secret marriage, she faces imprisonment in the Tower, only yards from her sister’s scaffold. “Farewell, my sister,” writes Katherine to the youngest Grey sister, Mary. A beautiful dwarf, disregarded by the court, Mary keeps family secrets, especially her own, while avoiding Elizabeth’s suspicious glare. After seeing her sisters defy their queens, Mary is acutely aware of her own danger, but determined to command her own life. What will happen when the last Tudor defies her ruthless and unforgiving cousin Queen Elizabeth?

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Queens of Scotland and English Princesses, Vol. 1: Connected With the Regal Succession of Great Britain The Life Of Mary Stuart, which will appear in the course of this series, was in preparation long before the publication Of that of Elizabeth Tudor, in our Lives Of the Queens of England, where it was promised as a companion biography, but a separate work. Inexorably as the destiny Of Mary Stuart was influenced by Elizabeth of England, no one could mix the personal annals Of those rival Britannic sovereigns together without producing, as Camden has done, great confusion, and im pairing the interest attached to both by violating the indi vidual unity essential to biography; for they were stars shining in distinct orbits, and never visible in the same hemisphere. Their Lives ought, however, to be read in succession, because they cast reflected lights upon each other, and are calculated, like the contemporary biographies in both series, to illustrate the comparative state of society in the sister realms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbulent Tudor Age never fails to capture the imagination. But what was it truly like to be a woman during this era? The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress; of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife; when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before. Historian Elizabeth Norton explores the life cycle of the Tudor woman, from childhood to old age, through the diverging examples of women such as Elizabeth Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister; Cecily Burbage, Elizabeth's wet nurse; Mary Howard, widowed but influential at court; Elizabeth Boleyn, mother of a controversial queen; and Elizabeth Barton, a peasant girl who would be lauded as a prophetess. Their stories are interwoven with studies of topics ranging from Tudor toys to contraception to witchcraft, painting a portrait of the lives of queens and serving maids, nuns and harlots, widows and chaperones. Norton brings this vibrant period to colorful life in an evocative and insightful social history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1688, the birth of a Prince of Wales ignited a family quarrel and a revolution. James II's drive towards Catholicism had alienated the nation and his two staunchly Protestant daughters by his first marriage, Mary and Anne. They are the 'ungrateful daughters' who usurped their father's crown and stole their brother's birthright. Seven prominent men sent an invitation to William of Orange---James' nephew and son-in-law---to intervene in English affairs. But it was the women, Queen Mary Beatrice and her two stepdaughters, Mary and Anne, who played a key role in this drama. Jealous and resentful of her hated stepmother, Anne had written a series of malicious letters to her sister Mary in Holland, implying that the Queen's pregnancy was a hoax, a Catholic plot to deny Mary her rightful inheritance. Betrayed by those he trusted, distraught at Anne's defection, James fled the kingdom. Even as the crown descended on her head, Mary knew she had incurred a father's curse. The sisters quarreled and were still not speaking to each other when Mary died tragically young. Anne did nothing to deserve her father's forgiveness, declaring her brother an outlaw with a price on his head. Acclaimed historian Maureen Waller recreated the late Stuart era in a compelling narrative that highlights the influence of three women in one of the most momentous events in English history. Prompted by religious bigotry and the emotion that beset any family relationships, this palace coup changed the face of the monarchy, and signaled the end of a dynasty.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Victoria: Her Glorious Life and Illustrious Reign The infant Princess, the fair May-flower of that year of grace 1819, came to her royal state rich in a pedigree of old renown. She was the undoubted legal successor of the Monarchs of a thousand years. In her veins ran the blood of Saxon, and No'rman, and English princes, from the far-away days of Alfred the Great. The connecting links were mostly women. The wise and worthy Matilda, wife of Henry I., united the Saxon and Norman race; the daughter of Matilda brought in the Plantagenets; the Tudor with Eliza beth of York connected them with the Plantagenets. Margaret, sister of Henry VIII., united by marriage the Tudors and Stuarts. To the last of these houses, our Queen Victoria belongs. Saxon, Plantagenet, and Stuart. She is the lineal descendant of them all! And Mr. Valentine most happily remarks: Tho's'e who believe in heredity will notice with pleasure that the life of the Queen has shown much of the courage of the lion race of Plantagenet, of the Sagacity of the Tudors, of. The kindliness and grace of the Stuarts without their weaknesses. A table of the family of George III. May be valuable just here, to those who are interested in questions of succession.
