Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, Vol. 1 of 3: With Critical Observations on Their Works It has nevertheless its foundation in reality. The Earl of Bridgewater being President of Wales in the year 1634, had his residence at Ludlow-castle in Shropshire, at which time Lord Brackly and Mr. Egerton, his sons, and Lady Alice Egerton, his daughter, passing through a place called the Hay-wood forest, or Haywood in Herefordshire, were benighted, and the lady for a short time lost: this accident being related to their father upon their arrival at his castle, Milton, at the request of his friend Henry Lawes, who taught musick in the family, wrote this masque. Lawes set it to musick, and it was acted on Michaelmas night; the two brothers, the young lady, and Lawes himself, bearing each a part in the representation. How oft, when fondling in mine arms, Gazing enraptured on its angel-face, My soul the maze of Fate would vainly trace, And burn with all a father's fond alarms And 0 what flattering scenes had Fancy feign'd, How did I rave of blessings yet in store Till every aching sense was sweetly pain'd, And my full heart could bear, nor tongue could utter more Just Heaven, I cry'd - with recent hopes elate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Poetry, Vol. 3 In the first volume of this History I expressed the hope that my work might be completed by the close of the last century. I have observed without surprise that by my failure to make good this anticipation I have exposed myself to some, perhaps not unmerited, reproach. But I venture to think I am not without excuse. Had it indeed been my purpose to make this History a mere record of biographical facts and isolated studies of individual poets, I might have been able to perform what I promised. But to accomplish the task that I have proposed to myself - namely, to trace through our poetry the growth of the national imagination, and to estimate the place occupied by each poet in a continuous movement of art - steady concentration of thought is required; and here circumstances have been against me. For to say nothing of my official duties, my election in 1895 to the Chair of Poetry at Oxford, which I could not have foreseen when making my first calculations, turned the thoughts of my leisure hours in a different direction, and it was not until the close of 1900 that I was able to resume my interrupted work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the English Poets, Vol. 35: With Prefaces, Biographical and Critical The Italic fchool, to its great diihonour, was more fertile in impiety, and produced a greater number of thefe irreligious philofophers. The mafters, who fue ceeded their famous founder Pythagoras, foon degene rated from his noble and pious principles, and not only corrupted the purity of his doetrine, but became down right apofiates, renouncing the belief of a God, and fubverting the foundations of religion. Leucippus, Democritus, Diagoras, and Protagoras, were jufily reckoned in this rank who aiferted, that the world was made by the cafual combination of atoms, without any ailiifance or dire&ion of a Divine Mind. They taught their followers this doc'trine, fupported it with argu ments, and f0 were Atheifis on pretended principles of reafon. But among all the ancient obdurate Atheif'ts, and inveterate enemies of religion, no one feems more fincere, or more implacable, than Epicurus.
