As. An inspiration to the living, however, history has a noble use. It is an incentive to high thoughts and great efforts toward well-doing. This is especially true of that class of history called biography. The lives of the great and good in all ages may be studied with profit when faithfully recorded. Hence it is the purpose of the present work to tell something of four Bishops who have served God and His Church in the Diocese of North Carolina. Ere we enter upon a narrative of their ministerial work, however, it may be well to consider the authority by which they exercised the duties of their high and sacred Office. Scriptural authority for the existence of the Office of Bishop was formerly conceded by all Christians; and hence we find on that subject few, if any, arguments among the writings of the pre-reformation period. The early theologians thought it use less to defend a doctrine which no one in a Christian land had ever questioned. In later times, however, the validity of the office of Bishop, as a distinct order in the sacred ministry, has been called into question by some denominations of Christians on the alleged grounds that the terms Bishop and Presbyter (or priest) were synonymous in the days Of the Apostles; and that. Book excerpt: While slavery and secession divided the Union during the American Civil War, they also severed the Northern and Southern dioceses of the Protestant Episcopal Church. In Challenges on the Emmaus Road, T. Felder Dorn focuses on the way Northern and Southern Episcopal bishops confronted and responded to the issues and events of their turbulent times. Prior to the Civil War, Southern bishops were industrious in evangelizing among enslaved African Americans, but at the same time they supported the legal and social aspects of the "peculiar institution." Southern and Northern bishops parted company over the institution of slavery, not over the place of blacks in the Episcopal Church. As Southern states left the Union, Southern dioceses separated from the Episcopal Church in the United States. The book's title was inspired by the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35 in which the resurrected Jesus Christ walked unrecognized with his disciples and discussed the events of his own crucifixion and disappearance from his tomb. Dorn perceives that scriptural episode as a metaphor for the responses of Episcopal bishops to the events of the Civil War era. Dorn carefully summarizes the debates within the church and in secular society surrounding the important topics of the era. In doing so, he lays the groundwork for his own interpretations of church history and also provides authentic data for other church scholars to investigate such topics as faith and doctrine, evangelism, and the administrative history of one of the most important institutions in America. Dorn devotes the final chapters to the postwar reunification of the Episcopal Church and Southern bishops' involvement in establishing the Commission on Freedmen to offer help with the educational and spiritual needs of the recently emancipated slaves.

It was first a "Classical and Theological School" (1856-1864) and then, following the Civil War, a Theological Training School and Associate Mission (1868-1900); in 1887 it split into two departments, a Theological Training School/Associate Mission and Ravenscroft High School for Boys (1887-1901). The purview of this book is from the early days of Asheville (1820s) to the building of Joseph Osborne's mansion in the 1840s (which would eventually house the school), through the years of the school's operation, and thence to the mid-20th century when the campus buildings were sold and repurposed. The book concludes with the efforts by historic preservationists in the late 1970s to save the few remaining buildings. The book includes biographical notes on notable alumni and histories of the churches established by the Ravenscroft Associate Mission and Training School.
