Book excerpt: Francis Drake was among the most successful explorers and naval officers of England in the Elizabethan era, successfully circumnavigating the globe and emerging victorious against the Spanish Armada. This biography discusses the most notable accomplishments of Francis Drake, and the role he assumed on voyages around the world. Although the numerous successes he enjoyed on his daring expeditions gained him plaudits in his native England, for the Spanish he was considered a ruthless and menacing pirate for his coastal raids upon settlements. Between 1577 and 1580 Drake succeeded in circumnavigating the world on a single voyage, an achievement which symbolized the growing naval prowess of his nation. A lengthy, blow-by-blow account of the battle with the Spanish Armada spans some three chapters of this text. Feared for its sheer numbers and tonnage, Spain's enormous fleet proved to be unwieldy in battle: novel tactics, such as England's use of ships set aflame and driven toward the enemy's tightly-packed vessels, drove the Armada off. However, as this biography notes, the victory was also thanks to the levelheadedness of Drake and his fellow commanders.
Download or read book English Seamen written by Robert Southey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Seamen: Howard, Clifford, Hawkins, Drake Cavendish Writing to his friend Mrs. Hodson, on the 20th January, 1830, Southey tells her, "I have engaged to compose a volume of Naval History in biographical form for the Cabinet Cyclopœdia, not for love but for lucre, though it will be done lovingly when in hand". The volume grew into volumes. In 1838 he had still to write that he was "getting through the admirals". Next year his strength broke down under the strain of incessant writing, and what was more fatal still, of reading continually through the walks which he was, with some difficulty, persuaded to take for the good of his health. The admirals remained a fragment. The whole work was to have included an introductory sketch of the Naval History of England down to the reign of Elizabeth. From that point, in the words of Southey's Preface, "it may be best continued in a biographical form; because there are then materials for such biography, whereby we are enabled to understand how much depended upon the character of individual commanders". The introduction filled the whole of one volume, and overflowed much the greater part of a second. The biographies had extended into a fifth volume when the failure of Southey's intellect stopped his share of the work, at the end of the life of Sir William Monson. Book excerpt: How well do you know the life of one of Britain’s great maritime heroes? Discover the truth behind a man who remains a legendary figure of history more than four hundred years after his death. Sir Francis Drake’s career is one of the most colourful on record. The most daring of the corsairs who raided the West Indies and Spanish Main, he led the English into the Pacific, and cirumnavigated the world to bring home the Golden Hind laden with Spanish treasure. His attacks on Spanish cities and ships transformed his private war into a struggle for surivival between Protestant England and Catholic Spain, in which he became Elizabeth I's most prominent admiral and marked the emergence of England as major maritime nation. ‘Excellent...It deserves to become the standard Drake life. His scholarship is impeccable’ Frank McLynn, Sunday Telegraph

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively and engaging new biography, Harry Kelsey shatters the familiar image of Sir Francis Drake. The Drake of legend was a pious, brave, and just seaman who initiated the move to make England a great naval power. Kelsey paints a far more interesting picture of Drake as an amoral privateer who lined his pockets with Spanish booty. 98 illustrations.
