Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives Girls Who Became Famous All of us have aspirations. We build air-castles, and are probably the happier for the building. However, the sooner we learn that life is not a play-day, but a thing of earnest activity, the better for us and for those associated with us. "Energy," says Goethe, "will do anything that can be done in this world"; and Jean Ingelow truly says, that "Work is heaven's hest." If we cannot, like George Eliot, write Adam Bede. we can, like Elizabeth Fry, visit the poor and the prisoner. If we cannot, like Rosa Bonheur, paint a "Horse Fair," and receive ten thousand dollars, we can, like Mrs. Stowe and Miss Alcott, do some kind of work to lighten the burdens of parents. If poor, with Mary Lyon's persistency and noble purpose, we can accomplish almost anything. If rich, like Baroness Burdett-Coutts, we can bless the world in thousands of ways, and are untrue to God and ourselves if we fail to do it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Group of Famous Women Stories of Their Lives So difficult has it been for teachers to find brief, readable biographies of distinguished women to use in connection with their lessons in history and civics that they will wel come this interesting collection. It should help to make the girls in our American schools proud of their woman hood and it Should give them a strong desire to be worthy of belonging to the same class as this group of noble workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Famous Women IN this little book I am going to tell you about some of the women who have been famous in the past. There are perhaps many names more famous than those I have chosen, but it was not always the best women who were the most talked about. In the past it was seldom that any woman, who was not a royal lady or some great aristocrat, became known to the world. In the early days of Christianity, many women suffered bravely for their faith, and later in the convents there were studious nuns who became known for their learning. In the account of St. Hilda you will read of one of the most famous of these. But most women were busy in keeping their houses, and had to do many things which no woman would dream of doing now. Cloth and linen had to be woven at home, simple medicines and ointments were made by the great ladies, who had often to act as doctors as well as nurses. Only few women had any book learning, and it was long before it was thought desirable for a woman to learn to writef When good schools were started for boys, few people thought it desirable to do anything for the education of girls. It was not till the nineteenth century that a change began, and that people as a rule began to think that, as girls had minds as well as boys, it was as well to give them the chance of learning. When you read about Mrs. Somerville, you will see how great was the change in her lifetime. No one troubled to teach her when she was a Child, but before her death the first colleges for women were founded at Cambridge. Joan of Kent is an example of the aimless life led by a great lady in the Middle Ages who was kindly and beloved, but did not know how to make her life of use to others. Margaret Beaumont was also a great lady and might have spent her days in pleasure, but the experiences of her life made her serious, and she used her life and her money in the service of others. Since their day, there have been many great ladies who have been like one or other of these two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Often, how ever, we are not willing to pay the price that he or She paid. To very few people does suc cess come easily. The small minority to whom it does seem to come in that way can only remain successful through careful, painstaking work. The women whose stories are within this book have not obtained the praise of the world easily. As girls, some of them were wealthy, some of them were very poor; butthey all had Obstacles to overcome. Each one had her own way to make. NO amount of money, nor an especially fine environment, could ever be the means of making anyone successful. Success comes not from without, but from within. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great American Girls There was a time when men were timid and girls were bold, - oh long, long ago - when apples grew on cherry trees and grapes on rose bushes. At that time the Sky was green and the grass was blue and men and women were rich and happy and told only untrue stories because they were so true. That was a Day of Dreams in a Dream-world, and one of the loveliest ladies in it cannot be called by name because she had no name, but was only a Story Teller. She knew much about many gallant girls in many countries and in all ages, some Of whose hands she had only clasped in dreams, but of whose lives she could speak, and others of whom She could tell the truly untrue tales which She felt to be true. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys and Girls Who Became Famous T was a fair, bright day of early summer in the year 1424, and the pleasant land of Lorraine lay green and fresh under blue skies and golden sunlight. In a meadow near the little village of Domremy a group of country girls were minding their fathers' sheep. In that quiet place the Sheep needed very little watching except when the cruel war that was rending France brought bands of rough soldiers to plun der the country-side. Then the church bell rang with quick, loud strokes, and the terrified children drove the sheep and pigs into the courtyard of the old disused castle that stood in a bend of the river, while the housewives gathered up their few treasures and followed. But on this day all was peaceful; the bells were silent except when they rang softly to mark the hour of prayer. The girls wandered over the meadow picking handfuls of lovely summer flowers; then they sat down on a bank where the meadow-sweet grew tall behind them, and the one who had the most skilful fingers wove the flowers into a garland.
