Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2004. Inculturation - the creative and dynamic relationship between the Christian message and culture or cultures - is of interest to many churches throughout the world, particularly since the Second Vatican Council made it part of the Roman Catholic agenda. This book looks at the question of the inculturation of Christian worship, particularly in the Eucharist. Looking at the relationship of worship and culture requires insights from both theology and anthropology; Tovey develops the tools to interconnect perspectives into an interdisciplinary exploration of different models of inculturation. Inculturation of Christian Worship is both interdisciplinary and ecumenical in approach. Case studies are drawn from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, African Independent Churches, The Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. While there is a focus on Africa for particular examples, the issues are discussed in a world wide context.

What does the process of inculturation teach about liturgy? Bishop McDonald, as editor, has assembled a broad list of contributors who address the issues of liturgical inculturation from theological, scriptural, musical, spiritual, and pastoral perspectives in the context of the Native American community. The discussions are of value to the wider church as it looks forward to a new era.

Book excerpt: The Church of Ceylon, in Sri Lanka, is an extra provincial Anglican church whose two dioceses are locally run but with oversight from the Archbishop of Canterbury. Christians, and in them Anglicans, are a small group in a predominantly Buddhist and Hindu country. There is a well know history of violence and hostility between various groups in the country, including the recent bombing of churches. This context leads to an existential need to engage in inter-faith dialogue and contextualization. Are Christians essentially drawn out of their culture and become foreigner in Sri Lanka? In the Church of Ceylon there has been a long tradition of inculturation in dress, architecture, music, and liturgical text. This study tries to bring this story to light. While questions of inculturation and contextualization are of importance throughout the Christian church, the story of the Church of Ceylon is not well known. It deserves to be known better and is an example to other parts of the Anglican Communion. While each context is different some of the work in Sri Lanka will be of help in other places where there are significant Buddhist communities. The book is authored by several Sri Lankan experts in liturgy, and an Englishman, who has worked as editor. Details are given in the book of the various authors.

This second volume in an important new series on worldwide Anglicanism draws on global contributions and examples to address the subject of liturgical formation: how liturgy forms Christians for participation in God’s work in the world, as well as the formation of Christians for worship and of those who lead worship. Voices from the UK, Africa, the US, Canada, and the Philippines consider key aspects of liturgical formation in this essential new volume: • connecting the liturgy with local contexts • learning about God and ourselves through worship • applying the liturgy to doing justice • developing the role of music in liturgical formation • training those who lead liturgical celebration...and more

Book excerpt: This much needed study defines and explains the very many changes in liturgy and worship that have swept Christian churches in the twentieth century. Students of liturgy and church history have hitherto had to search many different sources and tradition in order to gain an understanding of the revolution in worship that has occurred in the church throughout the world. In this work the authors highlight the interdependence of such developments in all the major churches - Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Protestant, and Pentecostal - and in places as far apart as Africa, Europe, India, and North America. The result is a fascinating and wide-ranging study of a subject that touches the lives of all Christians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Sunday around the world, Christians offer money and in-kind gifts to the church, traditionally known as alms. This act produces questions about what it means to offer God a gift when God has offered humanity the greatest gift in Jesus Christ, or the balance of favour or gratitude in the giving of these gifts. These very questions, and more, have had a significant influence on the liturgical theology, particularly in the offertory, within Anglicanism. In Of Thine Own Have We Given, Shawn O. Strout provides a comprehensive analysis of the offertory rites, including in his analysis other churches within the Anglican Communion, beyond the Church of England. Ordered historically, the book encompasses the sixteenth century through to current times, scrutinising the offertory and oblationary changes throughout their religious and historical contexts. Strout argues that the development of oblation in the offertory was neither arbitrary nor episodic, but rather the result of sustained theological tension. Using liturgical theology's tools of historical, textual, and contextual analyses, the book examines why these developments occurred and their importance for the church today.
