Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Poems in a Mother's Life T is through the earnest solicitation of friends that these poems are given to the public. They were written in odd moods and moments, afnid the duties and cares of the household: sometimes sitting by the baby's cradle, oftener amid the children's prattle in'the nursery, and some of them in the still hours after the day's duties were over and the little ones asleep. T hen the consciousness of duties imperfectly performed, and other responsibilities of a mother's life, pressed heavily; and the song that was sung was the overflowing of the tired soul. Some of the songs strayed into print, and have been' widely circulated; and letters have come to us from mothers whom we have never seen, expressing the comfort and sympathy they have derived from them. T rusting that these poems may be a bond of unity between the hearts of many mothers who have had the same experience, the author submits them with tenderest. Book excerpt: The hilarious #1 New York Times bestseller: Erma Bombeck’s take on marriage and family life is “fun from cover to cover” (Hartford Courant). Ever since she was a child, Er ma Bombeck has been an expert worrier, and married life has only honed that skill. She gets anxious about running out of ball bearings; about snakes sneaking in through the pipes; about making meaningful conversation on New Year’s Eve. Married life, she realizes, is an unpredictable saga even when you know exactly how loud your husband snores every night—and she wouldn’t have it any other way. In this crisp collection of essays, Bombeck shows off the irresistible style that made her one of America’s favorite humorists for more than three decades. When she sharpens her wit, no family member is sacred and no self-help fad is safe. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erma Bombeck including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

It will not be necessary for me to make any comment on the book, as it speaks for itself. However, I will say a few words of myself. After passing Sixty-one years of life (forty-three in California), I discovered a little poetical talent that had been idly lurking in the chambers of my brain all those years. It was a delightful discovery to me, as I have been an awful invalid for the last thirteen years, widowed early in life and Since my invalidism father and mother have died, which has left me more lonely. But since Christmas, 1902, the muse has been with me, and I am delightfully happy. I consider my muse or the spirit of poetry as a gift from Heaven, and a great comfort to me in my almost helpless condition, and so wonderful coming thus late in life. The woman is old, and the muse is so young, But euphony often comes quick to the tongue; That ambitious babe is climbing the stair, With a measure of health she is sure to get there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child Life: A Collection of Poems Having had occasion, some time since, to look over several volumes of selected verse intended for juvenile readers, and noticing in nearly all of them much that seemed lacking in literary merit or adaptation, it occurred to the compiler of this volume that, taking advantage of the merits as well as deficiencies of existing publications in this department, a selection might be made combining simplicity with a certain degree of literary excellence, without on the one hand descending to silliness, or, on the other rising above the average comprehension of childhood. How far the present volume has made this thought a reality it is not for him to decide, lie can only say that it is the result of a patient examination of the accessible juvenile literature of our own and other countries. Our English tongue is peculiarly rich in the lore of home and fireside; and the editor has availed himself of selections from the folk-songs and ballads of continental Europe, Where a doubt existed in regard to any particular poem he has not hesitated to take counsel of those whose judgment seemed to him reliable; and, in more than one instance, he has deferred to the instinctive and natural criticisms of childhood. It is but just to acknowledge his obligations to kind friends whose valuable suggestions have materially aided him; and, in an especial manner, his indebtedness to Lucy Larcom, so well known in connexion with "Our Young Folks,"who has given him the benefit of her cultivated taste and very thorough acquaintance with whatever is valuable in the poetical literature of Child-Life. Doubtless all readers will miss some favorite pieces which the necessity of giving as great a variety as possible to Lite compilation compelled him to pass over. He trusts, however, that a very large proportion of all that is permanently valuable will be found in these pages. He hopes and believes that no well-grounded exceptions can be taken to the character of the selections in a moral and religious point of view, lie has endeavored, avoiding everything like cant and sectarianism, to find expression for the reverence, love, and grateful trust, so natural and beautiful in those whom the Divine Teacher held up as examples to His disciples: "Of such is the kingdom of Heaven." The deep significance of His language is confirmed by the spiritual experience of all ages "The paths that lead us to God's throne Are worn by children's feet." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sherley: Book of Poems, Choice and Rare Miss Pegram, who was born and reared on a little farm, Fairy Haven, which is her present home, near the village of Elkin, in Surry County, North Carolina. Her father and mother died when she was quite young, leaving two little sisters in her care, and while she had another sister and four brothers, they were away from home and thus all the responsibilities of the home and her younger sisters devolved upon her, and her life has been one of self-sacrifice and perfect devotion to those who are near and dear to her, and the sick and the poor ever find a true friend and helper in her. Having thus spent her life in the country, and deprived of a liberal education, yet she is just such a woman as God intended that woman should be - true, noble and good - always doing her duty and knowing but little of the luxuries and some times needing the very necessities of life, yet she has ever been hopeful that through the cloud God's sun would sometime cast its warmest rays upon her and those she loves, and believing that it is through His mercies that she has been permitted to write these poems as a means of support for herself and sisters, she sends them forth with the wish that they may be a source of enjoyment and real good to many others.
