As a puppy, he surprises all the vets by surviving a life-threatening disease, and goes on to enjoy a long, happy and healthy life. Several years later we meet Spike, then Jake - both Staffordshire Bull Terriers, but totally different in every way. Spike is the bruiser, while Jake is the social butterfly. This story is about how they came to live with us, their little quirks and the canine capers they got up to along the way. These two wonderful little guys filled our hearts, and our home, with joy and happiness, and completely changed our views about Staffies. Fully Staffed is a heartwarming story filled with tears of laughter and sadness, and sure to be enjoyed by dog lovers everywhere.

Book excerpt: Pain is the most frustrating condition a physiotherapist encounters. This is the first yearbook of the Physiotherapy Pain Association for Chartered Physiotherapists. It considers two challenging aspects of pain in physiotherapy practice and provides insights and approaches to management that can be applied by all clinicians. Part 1 critically reviews pathology, pain mechanisms and current therapies and offers a biopsychosocial approach to assessment, prevention, and management of pain following whiplash injury. It assists the reader to understand and work with people who have developed chronic pain. Part 2 considers the relationship between fear and anxiety and activity and exercise behaviour; it describes an approach to back pain rehabilitation that incorporates an understanding of the key elements of fear-avoidance. In particular, it shows how the language that clinicians use may assist patients to develop positive attitudes that foster coping mechanisms. The Physiotherapy Pain Association Yearbooks are written by clinicians for clinicians. Each volume reviews the literature and presents best practice in a lively and understandable text. All clinicians will benefit from the straightforward advice.

Book excerpt: A debut novel about an American woman and an Indian woman who are about to dramatically change each other's lives-along with the lives of those around them. While vacationing in India, Kiria Langdon, the opinionated and driven CEO of a major company, meets Santoshi, a former slave who now works as a cleaning lady and lives in a shelter for homeless women in Chennai. Appalled by the conditions in the shelter, Kiria becomes obsessed with the idea of building decent housing for poor working women in India. Santoshi reluctantly agrees to help, even though she thinks Kiria's ideas are too crazy to succeed. Embarking on a rich journey of personal discovery, both women will learn invaluable lessons about themselves as they forge a powerful bond of sisterhood across the barriers of language and culture-a bond that makes anything possible.

Book excerpt: In the years since the initial discovery that blood from diabetic patients contains increased amounts of a posttranslationally gluco sylated form of hemoglobin (hemoglobin Ale)' an impressive number of studies have clarified and expanded the use of glycohemoglobin levels to assess disease status. Many other structural proteins have been shown to undergo similar changes, including proteins from tissues most commonly affected in diabetes (e.g., lens, aorta, peripheral nerve, basement membrane). Thus, the nonenzymatic glycosylation of hemoglobin emerges as an invaluable model for the pathogenesis of certain chronic diabetes complications. In addition to reviewing a wealth of investigative possibilities in the area of these chronic complications-including eye, kidney, nerve, and vascular disease-Dr. Cohen indicates how enhanced nonenzymatic glycosylation in uncontrolled diabetes underscores the pressing need for maintenance of long-term euglycemia. Dr. Cohen is an endocrinologist and diabetes specialist whose research activities have largely focused on the chemistry and metabo lism of the basement membrane in diabetes. This superb monograph on nonenzymatic glycosylation clearly shows the major trends of her past and present research and clinical activities. This book is beautifully written and a pleasure to read. It provides great insight into the mechanisms of the pathogenesis of the oom- vii viii Foreword cations of diabetes and should be of immense value not only to basic and clinical investigators, but also to internists, diabetologists, and endocrinologists in clinical practice.
