The state has unique geological features, such as the Ringing Rocks, which resonate like a bell when struck. If you're considering moving to Pennsylvania, there are many interesting facts about the state's history. Before European settlement, Pennsylvania was home to several American Indian nations, including the Delaware, Susquehannock, and Iroquois subgroups. The Tuscarora Nation, which spoke an Iroquoian language, also took up temporary residence in the state's central region from ca. 1715-55. The Dutch and English also claimed the region. But the Europeans didn't settle there for very long. The state was home to the first public zoo in the country. In 1784, Philadelphia became the country's capital city. In 1787, the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia. The state is home to the first automobile service station. In 1958, the State College Area High School became the first in the United States to teach drivers' education. The state was also home to the only American president born without the Atlantic Ocean. In 1799, the general assembly approved the first state flag bearing the coat of arms. The state has diverse topography, with two distinct climate zones. The state's western region experiences a cold and wet winter, while the drier interior areas experience warm and humid summers. Pennsylvania is home to five hundred and fifty Fortune 500 companies, including Hershey Company, the world's largest chocolate maker. It is also home to the University of Pennsylvania and Walmart. Additionally, the state has numerous other historical and modern institutions of higher learning.
