The story features Amy Dorrit, youngest child of her family, born and raised in the Marshalsea prison for debtors in London. Arthur Clennam encounters her after returning home from a 20-year absence, ready to begin his life anew. The novel satirises the shortcomings of both government and society, including the institution of debtors' prisons, where debtors were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The prison in this case is the Marshalsea, where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned. Dickens is also critical of the lack of a social safety net, the treatment and safety of industrial workers, as well the bureaucracy of the British Treasury, in the form of his fictional "Circumlocution Office". In addition he satirises the stratification of society that results from the British class system.

And will they ever escape the shadow of debtors' prison?

Book excerpt: An epic tale of two families in Victorian England and their shifting fortunes by one of the world’s greatest novelists. For decades, William Dorrit has been confined to Marshalsea, a debtor’s prison, which he cannot leave until he pays what he owes—meanwhile preventing him from getting a job in order to do so. His daughter Amy, born in Marshalsea, is now old enough to provide some help by earning money as a seamstress, and is free to come and go from the prison as she pleases. It is during one of her journeys to the outside world that she meets Arthur Clennam. Amy sews for Arthur’s mother, a rigid, emotionally distant woman who is also confined, in this case to a wheelchair. Arthur knows his mother is hiding a dark secret. But while he tries in vain to unearth it, something else is revealed: a large inheritance to which none other than William Dorrit is entitled. Thus begins a sprawling and beguiling novel of wealth and poverty, suspense and adventure, at once a satirical commentary about the British economic class system and bureaucratic absurdity, an engrossing mystery, and a tribute to the power of love.

The story of William Dorrit, imprisoned for debt in Marshalsea Prison, and his daughter and helpmate, Amy, or Little Dorrit, the novel charts the progress of the Dorrit family from poverty to riches. In his Introduction, David Gates argues that "intensity of imagination is the gift from which Dickens's other great attributes derive: his eye and ear, his near-universal empathy, his ability to entertain both a sense of the ridiculous and a sense of ultimate significance."

The novel attacks the injustices of the contemporary English legal system, particularly the institution of debtors' prison. Amy Dorrit, referred to as Little Dorrit, is born in and lives much of her life at the Marshalsea prison, where her father is imprisoned for debt. She and her siblings earn meager wages at jobs outside the prison walls, returning nightly to Marshalsea. Little Dorrit works as a seamstress for Mrs. Clennam, whose son Arthur takes an interest in the Dorrit family and eventually helps free Mr. Dorrit from prison. Arthur becomes a debtor himself and falls in love with Little Dorrit, but because their financial circumstances are now reversed, he does not ask her to marry him. In the end, Arthur&rsquo's mother, a miserly, mean-spirited woman, is forced to reveal that Arthur is not really her son and that she had been keeping money from him and the Dorrit's for many years. This circumstance leaves Little Dorrit and Arthur free to marry.

Mr Dorrit's satisfaction in remembering that it had not been necessary for him to announce himself to Clennam and Co., or to make an allusion to his having had any knowledge of the intrusive person of that name, had been damped over-night, while it was still fresh, by a debate that arose within him whether or no he should take the Marshalsea in his way back, and look at the old gate. He had decided not to do so; and had astonished the coachman by being very fierce with him for proposing to go over London Bridge and recross the river by Waterloo Bridge—a course which would have taken him almost within sight of his old quarters. Still, for all that, the question had raised a conflict in his breast; and, for some odd reason or no reason, he was vaguely dissatisfied. Even at the Merdle dinner-table next day, he was so out of sorts about it that he continued at intervals to turn it over and over, in a manner frightfully inconsistent with the good society surrounding him. It made him hot to think what the Chief Butler's opinion of him would have been, if that illustrious personage could have plumbed with that heavy eye of his the stream of his meditations.
