Book excerpt: Traditionally one of the Big Five of English football, Everton haven't enjoyed too much success in recent years but they are currently undergoing revival under the management of David Moyes and Bill Kenwright, the club's owner. Older than Liverpool, Everton have nearly as rich a history. Nine time winners of the English League title and five time winners of the FA Cup, they've sent out some of the greatest characters in English football on to the pitch at Goodison. From Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton and Alex Scott through Alan Ball, Bob Latchford and Howard Kendall to Gary Lineker, Duncan Ferguson and Wayne Rooney, few clubs can boast as many people with so much to say for themselves. Everton have a proud tradition and a very loyal support, and this book aims to capture the flavour of both.

Book excerpt: The editors of this volume contend that the current paradigm of standardizing Higher Education through an outcomes-dominated approach can constrain the educational process, where teachers may feel pressured to resort to risk-aversive methods that satisfy the learning-outcomes and assessment agenda. As a result, the ability of teachers and learners to inform, critique and develop their understanding of subjects together may be being lost. This book contains a variety of alternative approaches teachers have used to develop ways of 'humanizing' and deepening the learning process, through drawing on the creative arts and humanities - including cinema, literature, dance, drama and visual art - in a range of disciplines, it is argued by the editors that these 'arts-based inquiry' approaches have opened up possibilities for transformative learning as concerned with whole person development through opportunities to connect the-intuitive, emotional, relational and creative with the analytical and logical ways of knowing.

Book excerpt: This book challenges the notion that Black boys are resistant to education and incapable of achieving academically. Charting the educational progress of Black boys after they leave secondary school for the further education sector reveals how they take control of their educational careers and do well in the different environment. That so many Black boys start so well in primary school yet fail in secondary school is well documented. Making Education Work explores the educational trajectories of young Black men once they are in college and examines the institutional cultures of schools and colleges and the taught curricula of both sectors. Using phenomenological inquiry and student narratives, the book examines the key issues that shape the education of Black men after 16. Part One provides a contextual overview of their academic and social positioning, comparing the different ways in which the secondary and FE sectors accommodate Black learners. Part Two considers how the colleges' curriculum and cultural organization work to support their education. Part Three discusses how these students take control of their own educational destinies and describes the sophisticated network of personal and institutional support mechanisms which foster their education. The final section poses challenges to both sectors and suggests structural changes that will enhance the educational experience of Black boys and men. The book is for all teachers, trainers and educators interested in making a difference to the academic success of Black men and boys in college.
