Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Duisburg-Essen, language: English, abstract: The question that arises is how and why literature survives and has still its unique weight in the 21st century. This work is structured in several parts discussing what influence literature has on pupils in the EFL classroom. This seminar paper begins by giving a basic overview of the use of literature and why literature remains so successful. This is followed by the criteria of why certain literature is chosen and the challenges that may occur when teaching literature. After that, it will be discussed which influence literature has on the reading and writing skills of pupils in the EFL classroom. The young adult novel “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas will serve as an example, which will firstly be presented briefly in its outline and its fundamental themes. Later on, this novel will be analysed regarding the impact it has on pupils in the EFL classroom and to what extent this example might or might not help them to understand America’s society concerning recent themes as racism, police violence or identity. The aim of this term paper is to develop an appropriate answer to the question why literature is still so prominent and popular nowadays. The other important aspect and the aim this paper lays its focus on is how literature is used to reconstruct social values and norms or to understand a foreign society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Paderborn, language: English, abstract: Literature is one of the most important features of the English-as-Foreign-Language-classroom (EFL). It can be taught through different methods and genres. In the course of the seminar we got to know some of these methods which help to design interesting and creative lessons. Since there was the introduction of a certain standard of education in 2003, having the function of improving the culture of learning in secondary schools, it becomes obvious that literary texts are an essential part of the education plan. Education is not seen as retrievable knowledge anymore. It is looked at in its entirety. Therefore, the school should teach pupils to be independent und to develop their own personality. Of course, this also means thinking over the old teaching methods and pay attention to interdisciplinary factors. This aspect is especially important as English - apart from German - can be considered the most important subject concerning the fields of creativity and communication. Additionally, the acquirement of a foreign language leads to intercultural competence, identity formation, change of perspective and tolerance. Thus, it is also particularly literature that pays attention to these goals. In this term paper I will focus on the teaching of novels and their impact on language teaching. For this reason I will firstly answer the questions why literature is important in EFL-classrooms and examine which kind of texts are appropriate for teaching. Afterwards, I will talk briefly about the reception of novels with the help of pre-, while and post-reading phases. Finally, all these theoretical aspects will be part of the last chapter, where the young adult novel “Gracey” by James Moloney will serve as an example. There will be a lesson outline to demonstrate how the previous points could be put into practice and to display which competences are most acquired and improved.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: Teaching Literature, language: English, abstract: Few texts have been taught and dealt with more in school than William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954). It has been part of the unofficial `school-canon' for more than three decades now and therefore it is useful to examine the suitability of this text for the EFL-classroom. This will be done by introducing the criteria for selecting texts given in Engelbert Thaler's Teaching English Literature, adding some elements from Ansgar Nünning's and Carola Surkamp's Englische Literatur Unterrichten. Grundlagen und Methoden and applying both to Lord of the Flies. First, a short summary of the plot will be given before the text will be analyzed with reference to its appropriateness for the EFL-classroom. This analysis will take place in four steps: First, the formal aspects will be taken into account, and then the thematic aspects will be discussed. Thirdly, the aspects related to reception will be illuminated. At the end a conclusion will be drawn whether or not for me Lord of the Flies is a suitable text for the EFL-classroom. In the course of the paper there will be given some hints as to how a certain aspect could be investigated further in the EFL-classroom. These hints are by no means a complete list and several aspects could be added to it. The decision which aspects should be included and which should be left out is up to the teacher who has to decide with regard to the amount of time he wants to spend on Lord of the Flies and with regard to the preconditions in his class

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the work of six years. The gap between literature and language is to some extent removed. Each of the two will serve each other. The book’s value lies in its focus on literary stylistics. Katie is right when she says “most stylistics is not simply to describe the formal features of texts for their own sake, but in order to show their functional significance for the interpretation of the text; or in order to relate literary effects to linguistic ‘causes’ where these are felt to be relevant.” In recent years a special focus has been on learning English as a second language and pedagogy of English Language in EFL/ESL classrooms. To learn any language easily, it is usually through its literature and culture. So, English Language is not an exception. This book contains several critical essays on the pedagogy of English Language to EFL/ ESL. There is a tendency by stylisticians of literature to analyse and explain the part of the writer and the style of the manuscript in its literariness like editing the manuscript.
