It sprang, oddly enough, out of a challenge to discover a literary history of Glasgow, and in a weak moment I took up the gauntlet. At first my researches were not inspiriting, but as I persevered the subject broadened, and one eminent name after another came into view. I haunted the libraries, finding clues to the missing authors in biographies, reminiscences, dusty records, and still more dusty newspaper files, and the material ultimately increased to such dimensions that I trembled lest, like poor Philoxene Boyer, who set himself the tremendous task of overtaking everything that had been written about Shakespeare, I might never get beyond the reading. However, the end came when I had read over a thousand books, and sacrificed the leisure of four busy years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Glasgow: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time Some considerable time has now elapsed since the publication of any work claiming to be a record of the rise and progress of Glasgow; and that circumstance, in conjunction With the fact that Within the past few years much has transpired to throw not a little additional light upon important matters hitherto but imperfectly understood, has weighed With the Author in the preparation of this History of Glasgow. He considered that the historical material that had accumulated during the present century, and the augmented information now obtainable, would enable him to place before the public much that would be interesting in relation to Glasgow, but Which had not previously appeared in popular form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guinea Stamp: A Tale of Modern Glasgow The house was a plain and primitive cottage in the narrow street of a little Lincolnshire village - a village which was a relic of the old days before the drainage system was introduced, transforming the fens into a fertile garden, which seems to bloom and blossom summer and winter through. Its old houses reminded one of a Dutch picture, which the quaint bridges across the waterways served to enhance. There are many such in the fen country, dear to the artist's soul. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Square, Glasgow: And the Lives of Those Whom Its Statues Commemorate Some years ago he contributed a series of articles to the Evening T t'wer, Meditations in George Square, and so many expressed an interest in them, that he was encouraged to extend these in the few leisure hours which he has amid other duties. They might not now have seen the light but for the fact that there was the press of Messrs. Aird and Coghill in the east-end Exhibition, in which he had a part. This induced him to put the Sketches into print during the period of the Exhibition. It is hoped that, among other good results, the book will prove a suitable memorial of an under taking so successful, in which so many of his neighbours and fellow-citizens were interested. He wishes here to express the regret he shares with many that the beautiful statue of the late Dr. Norman Macleod is not also in this Square along with those of our Other great men. The old motto of the city was Let Glasgow Flourish by the Preaching of the Word and it would have been only right that whilst there are within it representatives of commerce, war, statesmanship, science, literature and travel, there should also be the statue of one who represented so well the Church and the country. Book excerpt: A mere forty miles apart, these cities have enjoyed a scratchy rivalry since wistful Edinburgh lost parliamentary sovereignty and defiant Glasgow came into its industrial promise.
