Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Essays Of himself he says, it does not lie in my nature, but I am subject to its influence 5 by which Goethe probably meant modestly to disclaim having any personal fascination of this kind over other men, but to indicate, what we know from other conversations he really held to be true, that apparently arbitrary and quite inexplicable impulses had Often exercised the most decisive and frequently fortunate influence on his own career. But it is quite clear that Goethe did possess in no common degree this capacity for, in a certain sense, fascinating men by his presence, as well as by his writings. If Byron had more of it as a man, Goethe succeeded in imparting far more of it to his works, and neither his life nor works can be properly judged without reference to its influence. It is something quite distinct from mere beauty, power, or general merit, either of personal character or Of literary creation. It is a power which goes out from the individual man, and which can imprint itself only on such writings as carry with them the stamp of individual character; and not always even on these, if, as for example in the case of Byron's earlier works, the play Of character is a good deal merged in some exaggerated mood of sentiment. It is not intensity: numbers of writers have surpassed Goethe in the intensity both Of literary and personal characteristics. Schiller was a man of far keener and intenser, though narrower nature, and yet he could not help going into utter captivity to the calm and somewhat limply-constituted mind of his Weimar friend. It is not even in itself independence or strength Of will for though Goethe had this in a remarkable degree, many others, as probably Schiller. The text here printed follows Ben Jonson's copy, now in the British Museum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical, Historical, and Miscellaneous Essays and Poems, Vol. 2 WE cannot transcribe this title page without strong feel ings of regret. The editing of these volumes was the last of the useful and modest services rendered to literature by a nobleman of amiable manners, of untarnished public and private character, and of cultivated mind. On this, as on other occasions, Lord Dover performed his part diligently, judiciously, and without the slightest ostentation. He had two merits which are rarely found together in a commentator. He was content to be merely a commentator, to keep in the background, and to leave the foreground to the author whom he had undertaken to illustrate. Yet, though willing to be an attendant, he was by no means a slave; nor did be con sider it as part of his duty to see no faults in the writer to whom he faithfully and assiduously rendered the humblest literary offices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Round Table, Vol. 2: A Collection of Essays on Literature, Men, and Manners The general principle of the difference between the two heads is this - The forehead of the Greek is square and upright, and, as it were, overhangs the rest of the face, except the nose, which is a continuation of it almost in an even line. In the Negro or African, the tip of the nose is the' most projecting part of the face; and from that point the features retreat back, both upwards towards the forehead, and downwards to the chin. This last form is an approximation to the shape of the head of the animal, as the former bears the strong est stamp of humanity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical, Historical, and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 2 of 6: With a Memoir and Index No attempt has been made to remodel any of the pieces which are contained in this volume. Even the criticism on Milton, which was written when the author was fresh from college, and which contains scarcely a paragraph such as his matured judgment approves, still remains overloaded with gaudy and ungraceful ornament. The blemishes which have been removed were, for the most part, blemishes caused by unavoidable haste. The author has sometimes, like other contributors to periodical works, been under the necessity of writing at a distance from all books and from all advisers; of trusting to his memory for facts, dates, and quotations; and of sending manuscripts to the post without reading them over. What he has composed thus rapidly has often been as rapidly 'printed. His object has been that every Essay should now appear as it probably would have appeared when 'it was first published, if he had then been allowed an additional day or two to revise the proof-sheets, with the assistance of a good library.
