Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful book offers poems and literary pieces for Sundays and principal feasts throughout the liturgical year. Each selection relates to an aspect of the Scripture readings for the Eucharist in the Revised Common Lectionary, the Roman Catholic lectionary, and the Book of Common Prayer. Drawn from many centuries and many countries-including Britain, Ireland, North America, Africa, and Australia, these readings bridging literature and liturgy can prompt private prayer or public worship through imaginative engagement. A short note before each passage connects with an idea, image, or story found in one of the biblical readings or the seasonal theme. From Robert Herrick to Brendan Kennelly, from Christina Rossetti to Emily Dickinson, from Dante to Monica Furlong, the poets, novelists, and playwrights gathered here bring an added dimension that graces the life of the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • An accessible and distinctive anthology of texts to support preaching and enhance individual devotion • Consulting editors include former Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold, Cynthia Kitteridge, Mark Oakley (Canon Chancellor, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London) • Volume 1 covers Advent to Ascension, Volume 2 Pentecost to end of Church Year The great themes of faith are also the great themes of literature and the arts. As we come to terms with God, hope, faith, tragedy, guilt, fear, and love, so the poets, writers, musicians, and artists pick up the same themes, and their understanding can enrich and deepen our own. Words That Listen brings these two worlds together. For each gospel, Markham and Hawkins offer four connecting resource suggestions—e.g., a poem, extract from a novel, a film/television/sporting illustration, and/or a humorous story—to illuminate, make connections, and spark new ways of looking at familiar stories. The suggestions for each Sunday include a brief summary and explanation of the extracts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can an understanding of the poetics of the Gospels, together with a reading of poetry inspired by them, make the homily an art form as compelling as a poetry performance? In Preaching the Poetry of the Gospels, Elizabeth Michael Boyle, O.P., offers a preaching guide to the Sunday Lectionary using the insights of poets to enliven and elicit more powerful homilies. Preaching the Poetry of the Gospels demonstrates that not only the Fourth Gospel but also the Synoptics can be read with special understanding when they are interpreted as narrative poetry. For each Sunday, from the first Sunday in Advent through Trinity Sunday, the author offers a poet's reflection on the literary devices in the liturgical texts, and a gathering of poems about the gospel event. Chapters are "Incarnation: Advent to Epiphany, " "Redemption: Ash Wednesday through Holy Week, " "Resurrection: The Sundays of Easter, " "Transformation: Ascension to Trinity Sunday, " and "Reclaiming the Poetry of Ordinary Time."

Its message engages Christian belief and action in the present day. While informed by the best in current biblical studies, its commentary on the Scripture passages of the Revised Common Lectionary focuses on the questions of Christian life in the world that church members bring to worship. Each entry is co-written by a theologian and homiletician and seeks to answer the questions, ""What does this passage say about the gospel and how does it speak to my e.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Companion to the Lectionary: Being a Commentary on the Proper Lessons for the Sundays and Holy Days With Hezekiah there was a change of policy. He was one of the best of the kings, the only one who came up to the model of David. The King of Assyria destroyed the kingdom of Israel in the fourth year of Hezekiah's reign, but Hezekiah, trusting in the lord God of Israel, had the courage to break away from the tyranny of Assyria, and recovered his supremacy over the Philistines. To punish him the King of Assyria invaded his land, and we have an account of this invasion full of interest in the Lessons for the 1sth Sunday after Trinity. They will be considered at length in their place, meanwhile we need only remind the reader that this invasion was destroyed by an awful visitation. The angel of the Lord went forth in the night into the camp of the Assyrians, and slew a hundred fourscore and five thousand. This great event, and also the recovery of Heze kiah from grievous sickness, are recorded in the same words both in the Book of Kings and in the Book of Isaiah. And here the public life of Isaiah ends. There is no event recorded afterwards in which he is mentioned as taking part 1.
