Her cousins, Billy and James, have found theirs in sports and music, but Ally has yet to discover something that will make people cheer just for her. At her best friend's suggestion, Ally tries ballet. When that doesn't turn out the way she hopes, she signs up to sing in the school talent show. Thanks to support from James, Ally's performance goes well, and she thinks she has found her thing at last. But when James gets into an accident, Ally's whole world is turned upside down. As she tries to be there for her cousin, Ally wrestles with why God allows bad things to happen and whether she should keep doing her thing at all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quintessential American family is pulled apart by war and the rapidly changing tides of society in Jack Kerouac’s captivating first novel Published seven years before his iconic On the Road, Jack Kerouac’s debut novel follows the experiences of one family as they navigate the seismic cultural shifts following World War II. Inspired by Kerouac’s own New England youth, the eight Martin children enjoy an idyllic upbringing in a small Massachusetts mill-town. Middle son Peter, a budding intellectual and promising athlete, most strongly feels the lure of the future. When war breaks out, the siblings’ lives are interrupted by military service; their parents must sell their house after the family business goes bankrupt; and Peter, eager to see the world, voyages overseas as a Merchant Marine. After returning home, Peter is drawn to the kinetic energy of New York City and the progressive, bohemian ideas springing from its denizen young poets, writers, and artists. His new friends are fictionalized versions of Kerouac’s contemporaries: Allen Ginsberg (as Leon Levinsky), Lucien Carr (as Kenneth Wood), and William Burroughs (as Will Dennison), and other members of the Beat Generation. Seen by Peter’s parents as hoodlums and junkies, the Beats challenge conventional American ideas of everything from authority and religion to marriage and domestic life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treasure chest of exceptional stories by one of Canadas classic authorsall now available in one volume. Ernest Buckler, best known as the author of the Canadian classic, The Mountain and the Valley, never achieved the lasting fame he deserved. His first story was published in Esquire, a significant American literary magazine known for publishing leading writers such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Sinclair Lewis. Over the years, nearly forty more of Buckler’s short stories were published in several popular magazines, including Maclean’s where his story “The Quarrel” won first prize for fiction. In Thanks for Listening: Stories and Short Fictions by Ernest Buckler, Marta Dvořák gathers together many of those stories as well as some previously unpublished pieces. At times she has chosen to include the fuller, original versions, and has reinstated some of the lost passages that were cut from stories to fit popular magazine requirements. Ernest Buckler’s writing is rooted in the magic of the ordinary. He celebrates the land and its community, and sensuously recreates a paradise — almost a Garden of Eden. Buckler’s American editors were right in believing that no one evoked the lost world of North Americas agrarian past better than Ernest Buckler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The created beings called angels, as outlined in the King James Version of the Holy Bible, have amazing abilities. Not being bound to time or space, they are well qualified for the missions assigned them. The angels, such as Angel 942, with their specific history and talents, often combine actions to rescue the Boss young humans. A tragedy that splits a family apart was not Plan A, but there had been the minus angels to contend with. No matter. The Boss angels knew what would happen and that it could be incorporated into successful Plan B. Young Leticia Morgan went one way and her brothers another, but that was not the end of the story within this historical fiction account. There was the event with horses, a locomotive and the unsafe trestle, and well, a lot happens before and after this incident, but its all in the book. There are numerous accounts of humans being moved in a direction that was not necessarily in their plans. Some are in the Holy Bible, and others go un-noticed, but some happen like the one in this book all with angelic help and direction that is not necessarily recognized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Edward Thomas was killed at the Battle of Arras in 1917 his poems were largely unpublished. But in the years since his death, his work has come to be cherished for its rare, sustained vision of the natural world and as 'a mirror of England' (Walter de la Mare). This edition, drawn from Thomas's manuscripts and typescripts as well as from his published works, offers an accessible introduction to this most resonant - and relevant - of poets. 'In his lifetime, he was known and loved by a very, loving few. Now, since his death, he is known and loved by very many, and yearly this is more so. There is in his poems and unassumingly profound sense of permanence. A war came and ditched him, but his poems stay with no other wounds than those which caused them.' Dylan Thomas 'A very fine poet. And a poet all in his own right. The accent is absolutely his own.' Robert Frost 'The one hundred and forty poems he wrote in the last two years of his life are a miracle. I can think of no body of work in English that is more mysterious.' Michael Longley

Book excerpt: A lavish collector’s edition of the complete poems of eminent Japanese master of the haiku, Matsuo Bashō. Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694) is arguably the greatest figure in the history of Japanese literature and the master of the haiku. Bashō: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō offers in English a full picture of the haiku of Bashō, 980 poems in all. In Fitzsimons’s beautiful rendering, Bashō is much more than a philosopher of the natural world and the leading exponent of a refined Japanese sensibility. He is also a poet of queer love and eroticism; of the city as well as the country, the indoors and the outdoors, travel and staying put; of lonesomeness as well as the desire to be alone. Bashō: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō reveals how this work speaks to our concerns today as much as it captures a Japan emerging from the Middle Ages. For dedicated scholars and those coming upon Bashō for the first time, this beautiful collector’s edition of Fitzsimons’s elegant award-winning translation, with the original Japanese, allows readers to enjoy these works in all their glory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack Kerouac was an American novelist, poet and leader of the Beat movement. His iconic masterpiece ‘On the Road’ exacted a broad cultural influence, capturing the spirit of its time as no other work of the 20th century had done since ‘The Great Gatsby’. Kerouac’s insistence upon ‘First thought, best thought’ and his refusal to revise was controversial. He deemed revision as a form of literary lying, imposing a form farther away from the truth of the moment. His novels reveal a quest for pure, unadulterated language—the truth of the heart unobstructed by the lying of revision. His technique demonstrates an unusual writing style, neither haphazard nor sloppy, but systematic in the most-individualised sense.
