Part 1 discusses the mission of the CCLOW, the action-based research project during which the 12 literacy programs were conducted/studied, and the book's intended uses. Part 2 examines selected "woman-positive" actions/accomplishments of the 12 programs. Among the actions described are the following: giving women opportunities to talk to and help one another; visiting women in the community; developing a policy against sexual harassment; starting a women's committee; having women talk/write about their lives; making classes more feminist; developing resource booklets; and considering having the role of women in union-based literacy and coeducational literacy programs. Discussed in part 3 are the following findings of the exploratory study: several factors (violence, poverty, isolation, sex bias/discrimination) make literacy more difficult for women; literacy work is difficult but can be satisfying; and programs could be made more positive for women by starting woman-positive activities, ensuring that learning materials are realistic, and involving learners in decisions. Book excerpt: In 1500, as many as 99 out of 100 English women may have been illiterate, and girls of all social backgrounds were the objects of purposeful efforts to restrict their access to full literacy. Three centuries later, more than half of all English and Anglo-American women could read, and the female reader was emerging as a cultural ideal and a market force. While scholars have written extensively about women's reading in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and about women's writing in the early modern period, they have not attended sufficiently to the critical transformation that took place as female readers and their reading assumed significant cultural and economic power. Reading Women brings into conversation the latest scholarship by early modernists and early Americanists on the role of gender in the production and consumption of texts during this expansion of female readership. Drawing together historians and literary scholars, the essays share a concern with local specificity and material culture. Removing women from the historically inaccurate frame of exclusively solitary, silent reading, the authors collectively return their subjects to the activities that so often coincided with reading: shopping, sewing, talking, writing, performing, and collecting. With chapters on samplers, storytelling, testimony, and translation, the volume expands notions of reading and literacy, and it insists upon a rich and varied narrative that crosses disciplinary boundaries and national borders.

The chapter has been reorganized and new passages are included within 67 passages in almost 30 different topics. Chapter four, Word practice covers academic, scientific, social and TOEFL, Genel Dil and ECL vocabulary. Various exercises and tests are given. Most confused and misused words are covered as well. Chapter five is the testing section which includes practice tests such as 3 English Proficiency Practice Tests with listening sections, 4 vocabulary and reading comprehension based English Screening Tests and 1 Proficiency Practice Test for general English Proficiency. All tests cover 800 questions based on listening, reading, structure and vocabulary related to both technical and social subjects. The book covers various exercises such as 403 comprehensive exercises in the grammar chapter with a complete test of GATE-Grammar Achievement Test in English. 254 open end and multiple choice exercises are in listening comprehension. Reading Comprehension chapter covers 746 comprehensive exercises to improve learners’ reading comprehension. In Word Practice chapter, 198 exercises are given to practice various academic vocabularies which learners may encounter while practicing language for various exams.

In recent years, educators have been developing innovative curriculum to address such issues as trauma and violence (e.g., Take on the Challenge), work-readiness (e.g. Ready for Work), or women's issues in general (Making Connection). New Directions-- Empowering Women through Literacy: Voices from Experience is the first comprehensive collection of writing from the field by everyday educators who experience the joys and challenges, creativity and barriers to acknowledge or integrate innovative solutions to support women's learning needs in adult basic education and literacy settings. Mirroring the power of community-based and grassroots organizations, this volume has had a remarkable history. It has emerged from five years of work by WE LEARN (Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network) to address the needs of literacy educators and students alike through the organization. Book excerpt: Winner of the MLA's Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and culture (1999) For Anglos, the pulsing beats of salsa, merengue, and bolero are a compelling expression of Latino/a culture, but few outsiders comprehend the music's implications in larger social terms. Frances R. Aparicio places this music in context by combining the approaches of musicology and sociology with literary, cultural, Latino, and women's studies. She offers a detailed genealogy of Afro-Caribbean music in Puerto Rico, comparing it to selected Puerto Rican literary texts, then looks both at how Latinos/as in the US have used salsa to reaffirm their cultural identities and how Anglos have eroticized and depoliticized it in their adaptations. Aparicio's detailed examination of lyrics shows how these songs articulate issues of gender, desire, and conflict, and her interviews with Latinas/os reveal how they listen to salsa and the meanings they find in it. What results is a comprehensive view "that deploys both musical and literary texts as equally significant cultural voices in exploring larger questions about the power of discourse, gender relations, intercultural desire, race, ethnicity, and class."
