Book excerpt: In this volume 268 species of the Larentinae are covered. Many of the genera have caused serious problems in identification, but based on the larger number of specimens illustrated on the 25 colour plates, the species can now be identified much more easily. In additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, differential characters are pointed out with arrows. As in the previously published volumes 1,2 and 4, maps with the European distribution are given with dots for verified specimens. There are photographs of male and female genitalia of all species and this volume also contains a systematic catalogue of the European species including those of the neighbouring regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and the Middle East. This is the first volume including genetic information from DNA barcoding which proved to be a useful, additional tool in identification, taxonomy and species delimitation.

Book excerpt: In The Geometrid Moths of Europe volume 2 on Sterrhinae, a number of difficult genera such as Cyclophora, Scopula and Idaea are covered. Especially Idaea with more than 100 species occuring in Europe, has caused a lot of problems to identify, but based on the many specimens illustrated on the 24 colour plates, the species of this genus can be identified much easier now. Apart from its largest species, the genus Idaea is illustrated in 1.5 times natural size. The remaining Sterrhinae are in natural size on the colour plates. On additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, their differential characters are pointed out with arrows. Three new species and three new subspecies are described. A map with the European distribution is given, and with dots for verified specimens. Finally there are line drawings of male and female genitalia of all species and also this volume contains a systematic catalogue of the European species and including those of the neighbouring regions such as North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey, and the Middle East. Originally published with imprint Apollo (ISBN 9788788757378) in 2004.

Book excerpt: The series Microlepidoptera of Europe is intended to be a tool for identifying the European micro-moths. Each volume treats a systematic unit comprising about 100-300 species. This will usually mean a family or subfamily, but it can also be a single large genus, or a group of smaller families. Small and systematically unrelated groups may also be collected in one volume. The geographical area covered will be Europe, west of the former U.S.S.R., and include the Baltic countries. Authors may also include the adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region. Each volume will illustrate the adults of all species in full color, either by color photographs or watercolors. Sexual dimorphism and extensive polymorphism will also be illustrated. All species, except the largest, will be shown enlarged. The series has had very fine reviews in European entomological journals and is already regarded as a standard work of the 21st century.

In the Systematic Section, the meanings of over 4000 names are given. The nomenclature is that of Kloet & Hincks (1972) with more recent amendments. The specific names (each preceded by the Bradley & Fletcher Log Book number) are explained, together with the names of the genera, families and suborders to which they belong, giving both Latin and Greek roots. Appendixes include People commemorated in the names of Lepidoptera; Geographical Names and Unresolved Names. References and Indexes complete the work.

All the Eupithecia species are illustrated in 1.5 times natural size on the colour plates. A total of 151 species are dealt with in the volume of which 133 are Eupitheciini. One new species is described and a number of species are recorded from Europe for the first time. Volume 4 sets new standards in the study of the European Eupitheciini and Perizomini. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lepidoptera are without doubt the best known insect order in today’s Europe. Nevertheless there is still a great lack of knowledge in some groups, such as the Geometridae. The northern and central European fauna is relatively well known, but the distribution and bionomics of a number of species are poorly known. This problem is much more marked in southern Europe where no books on Geometridae have been published for nearly a century. Data on the bionomics are frequently unavailable which makes it difficult to assess environmental threats to the geometrid species. Information on distribution is still grossly incomplete and many records have been based on misidentifications. These problems are mainly caused by the lack of comprehensive identification literature. The geographical area covered in this series ranges from North Cape to Gibraltar and Malta, and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ural Mountains. Each volume will illustrate the adults of all species, and if possible also subspecies, in photographic colour plates of the highest quality. Sexual dimorphism as well as polymorphism will be illustrated. Most species will be shown at natural size, but some larger groups of small species such as the genera Idaea and Eupithecia will be shown enlarged.

A short summary of the characters of the Procridinae, comments on possible phylogenetic relationships, a complete check-list of species and all known synonyms, an identification key with genitalia drawings of all species, a systematic catalogue with type localities and depositories of types, data on the distribution, and annotated list of all known larval foodplants, description of new biologies and a detailed bibliography are provided. Moreover, illustrations of wing venation, morphology of antennae and legs, larval morphology, so far unpublished photos of larvae and their foodplants and colour paintings of all mentioned species are included.

Book excerpt: This outstanding work is a manual that enables one to identify pupae, or empty pupal skins, of about two thirds (some 2,600 species) of the Central European Lepidoptera. The text part of about 560 pages comprises a short introduction, identification keys, and species-for species accounts including succinct descriptions of pupal morphology as well as information about habitats, life-style and food plants. Lepidoptera Pupae of Central Europe should be useful for anyone with a primary interest in Central European Lepidoptera. It will also be indispensable for population ecologists studying predators and parasites of Lepidoptera, for soil biologists (since so many Lepidoptera pupate in/on the soil), and for applied entomologists in need of identifying lepidopteran pests without rearing the adults. All families are well covered except for the Nepticulidae and Coleophoridae, for which much basic research on pupal stucture still remains to be done (and whose immatures are usually identifiable from mine architecture/case structure anyway) and a few of the smallest families. The print edition is available as a set of two volumes (9788788757477).

Book excerpt: Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. The World Catalogue of Insects series is an initiative compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. Each volume in the series contains standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is optional, e.g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliographical information; pest status; vector status; etc. This volume five focuses on Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). (Series: World Catalogue of Insects)
