Book Synopsis Missionary Politics in Contemporary Europe by : José Pedro Zúquete
Download or read book Missionary Politics in Contemporary Europe written by José Pedro Zúquete and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Western Europe is widely considered to be the most secularized region of the world, José Pedro Zúquete asserts that, in certain cases, intense religion has manifested itself outside the church through political channels. The sacralization of politics is commonly studied in terms of movements and regimes of the past. Offering an innovative political analysis, Zuquette focuses on contemporary movements, developing the term “missionary politics.” The author focuses on Umberto Bossi’s Northern League in Italy and Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front in France, assessing the literature, rhetoric, imagery, and patterns of charismatic control of these movements. Drawing upon interviews, extensive fieldwork, and abundant primary sources, Zúquete identifies the ways in which these political movements provide members with a sense that the nation is sacred and that its people have been divinely chosen.

Book Synopsis La connaissance de l'Islam dans l'Occident médiéval by : Marie-Thérèse d'Alverny
Download or read book La connaissance de l'Islam dans l'Occident médiéval written by Marie-Thérèse d'Alverny and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the second in the series of Marie-Thérèse d’Alverny’s selected articles to be published by Variorum, gathers the majority of her studies on the understanding of Islam in the West from the early Middle Ages until the mid-13th century; some related works will be included in a further selection. In the 12th century, as she shows, a serious effort was for the first time made to learn something of the reality behind the fabulous and scurrilous stories about Muhammad and Islam. A collection of translations from Arabic, including the Koran, was commissioned in 1140 by Peter the Venerable of Cluny, and d’Alverny found the manuscript in which his secretary wrote these out. This discovery led her to explore other translations into Latin of the Koran and other Islamic texts, to identify the work of the translators Hermann of Carinthia, Robert of Ketton and Mark of Toledo, and to depict the milieu in which this work was possible.

Book Synopsis Is Critique Secular? by : Talal Asad
Download or read book Is Critique Secular? written by Talal Asad and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume interrogates settled ways of thinking about the seemingly interminable conflict between religious and secular values in our world today. What are the assumptions and resources internal to secular conceptions of critique that help or hinder our understanding of one of the most pressing conflicts of our times? Taking as their point of departure the question of whether critique belongs exclusively to forms of liberal democracy that define themselves in opposition to religion, these authors consider the case of the “Danish cartoon controversy” of 2005. They offer accounts of reading, understanding, and critique for offering a way to rethink conventional oppositions between free speech and religious belief, judgment and violence, reason and prejudice, rationality and embodied life. The book, first published in 2009, has been updated for the present edition with a new Preface by the authors.
