Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1974, Marshall Hodgson’s The Venture of Islam was a watershed moment in the study of Islam. By locating the history of Islamic societies in a global perspective, Hodgson challenged the orientalist paradigms that had stunted the development of Islamic studies and provided an alternative approach to world history. Edited by Edmund Burke III and Robert Mankin, Islam and World History explores the complexity of Hodgson’s thought, the daring of his ideas, and the global context of his world historical insights into, among other themes, Islam and world history, gender in Islam, and the problem of Muslim universality. In our post-9/11 world, Hodgson’s historical vision and moral engagement have never been more relevant. A towering achievement, Islam and World History will prove to be the definitive statement on Hodgson’s relevance in the twenty-first century and will introduce his influential work to a new generation of readers.

Download or read book The House of Islam written by Ed Husain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ed Husain has become one of the most vital Muslim voices in the world. The House of Islam could very well be his magnum opus.” -Reza Aslan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Zealot “This should be compulsory reading.” -Peter Frankopan, author of the international bestseller The Silk Roads Today, Islam is to many in the West an alien force, with Muslims held in suspicion. Failure to grasp the inner workings of religion and geopolitics has haunted American foreign policy for decades and has been decisive in the new administration's controversial orders. The intricacies and shadings must be understood by the West not only to build a stronger, more harmonious relationship between the two cultures, but also for greater accuracy in predictions as to how current crises, such as the growth of ISIS, will develop and from where the next might emerge. The House of Islam addresses key questions and points of disconnection. What are the roots of the conflict between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims that is engulfing Pakistan and the Middle East? Does the Koran encourage the killing of infidels? The book thoughtfully explores the events and issues that have come from and contributed to the broadening gulf between Islam and the West, from the United States' overthrow of Iran's first democratically elected leader to the emergence of ISIS, from the declaration of a fatwa on Salman Rushdie to the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo. Authoritative and engaging, Ed Husain leads us clearly and carefully through the nuances of Islam and its people, taking us back to basics to contend that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor our enemy, but our peaceable allies.

Book Synopsis Rethinking World History by : Marshall G. S. Hodgson
Download or read book Rethinking World History written by Marshall G. S. Hodgson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-05-28 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the history of the modern world the history of Europe writ large? Or is it possible to situate the history of modernity as a world historical process apart from its origins in Western Europe? In this posthumous collection of essays, Marshall G. S. Hodgson challenges adherents of both Eurocentrism and multiculturalism to rethink the place of Europe in world history. He argues that the line that connects Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to modern times is an optical illusion, and that a global and Asia-centred history can better locate the European experience in the shared histories of humanity. Hodgson then shifts the historical focus and in a parallel move seeks to locate the history of Islamic civilisation in a world historical framework. In so doing he concludes that there is but one history - global history - and that all partial or privileged accounts must necessarily be resituated in a world historical context. The book also includes an introduction by the editor, Edmund Burke, contextualising Hodgson's work in world history and Islamic history.

Book Synopsis The Different aspects of Islamic culture by : Ali, Abdulrahim
Download or read book The Different aspects of Islamic culture written by Ali, Abdulrahim and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of volumes on the manifold facets of Islamic culture is intended to acquaint a very wide public with the theological bases of its faith; the status of the individual and of society in the Islamic world; its expansion since the Revelation; its cultural manifestations in literature and the arts; and finally, Islam today between loyalty to its past and the new challenges of modernity. The last 100 years of Islamic history are examined in the final volume, although the approach is thematic rather than historical. The period considered has seen European colonialism in most of the Islamic world, and Islam has played a major role in the initiation and organization of resistance movements. We survey the groupings and forms of co-operation that have arisen since liberation from colonialism and investigate the political necessity and the moral stand that underlie the unity of the Islamic peoples. Social and economic progress is reviewed and space is devoted to such topics as the ongoing problem of Palestine, moves towards educational reform, and the status of women in Islam. As the Islamic world cannot be imagined in isolation, this volume examines the attitude of contemporary Islam towards other religions and cultures, and considers efforts aimed at achieving mutual understanding and coexistence in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries.

Book Synopsis Islam and Its Challenges in the Globalised World by : Ahmad Akil bin Muda
Download or read book Islam and Its Challenges in the Globalised World written by Ahmad Akil bin Muda and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning, Islam faces many challenges from its foes, that is, the disbelievers'atheism, Jews and Christians, secularism, liberalism, pluralism, etc.'who want to extinguish Islam and its foundation from this world. Since the fall of the Islamic empire in the fifteenth century, Muslim countries pathetically came under the dominance of Western powers in almost every aspect of life. The United States of America and other powers foreign policies generally have hidden agenda to weaken the Muslim countries so that they can keep on dominating the Muslim world. They give support to the secularist, liberalist, and pluralist groups in the Muslim countries to go against the Islamic traditionalists and fundamentalists. Although there are more than a billion Muslims in the world, they are weak and have become marginalized. Gone is the power of the Muslims of the past. Therefore, the contemporary Muslims have no choice but to wake up to face the challenge if they are genuine Muslims because they are the best ummah ever created by Allah. During the height of Islamic empire, Islam stayed strong and kept on spreading its wing throughout the world because of charismatic and credibility some of its leaders. Islam is a universal religion that brought enlightenment to human race. Nevertheless, Muslim nations in the modern era of globalized world are disobedient lot unlike the Muslims of the past; thus they become weak. Globalization is the creation of the Western imperialists as a tool to control world trade and economy of other nations. Small and underdeveloped nations are often unfairly treated. The polarization and bloody borders between the Christians West and the Muslims are now become more transparent than ever before. The wounds inflicted by the Americans and the West in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and others are still bleeding and bloody. The usage of the words such as Islamophobia and the Muslims as terrorist frequently propagated throughout the world against Islam, thereby affecting the feeling of friendly and moderate Muslims in general. The cruelties inflicted on many of the innocent Muslims directly or indirectly give a green light for some hardcore Muslims to retaliate in a more radical way, including suicide bombing. The difference perception of faith, moral character, social, ethic, economy, politics, law, etc., in Islam with other religions are wide apart. Islam is a religion of Oneness of God (Islamic Monotheism) whilst the others are not. Islam taught the Muslims to live side by side in co-existence and in peace with the others provided there is a mutual respect with one another. Islam is a moderate religion. The whole universe and its contents absolutely belong only to Allah. Human race are His servants to take good care of the earth. Muslim ummah in the modern world miserably failed in their responsibilities in this world because most of them are lack of faith in Allah. They have deserted al-Quran and al-Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in their way of life. Nevertheless, ultimately near the end of the world the Muslims will win as promised by Allah although disbelievers do not believe it.
