Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lady Eustace—more familiarly known as Lizzie—is very beautiful, very clever, and very rich. On closer inspection, she turns out also to be a “nasty, low, scheming, ill-conducted, dishonest little wretch.” Her calculated marriage to a wealthy but sickly young baronet brought her the wealth she desired, including a spectacular diamond necklace which she wore in the days before her husband’s demise. Upon his death, the lawyer for the estate is determined to recover it as a family heirloom. The young widow is equally determined to keep it as her own. But just as Lizzie sought a life of ease by marrying money, so too there are those who see in Lady Eustace their opportunity to acquire riches along with the beautiful widow herself. Given the relentless, even fierce, legal forces she faces regarding the diamonds, Lizzie is also alert to the benefit she would enjoy from having a husband to support her. But which is it to be? The tedious Lord Fawn, who would bring a title? Her cousin and confidant, Frank Greystock, who is a member of Parliament but saddled with debt? Or the debonair but dubious Lord George de Bruce Carruthers? Or perhaps none of them! Lizzie’s life of lies and calculation has echoes and mirrors in the novel’s subplots. She falls in with an unsavory and scheming set which includes a desperately ill-suited couple being driven towards a potentially disastrous marriage. Meanwhile, the love life of her childhood friend, the plain, poor, and pure Lucy Morris, seems to be the antithesis to Lizzie’s own. Anthony Trollope felt real ambivalence about the growing interest in mystery novels, whose popularity was burgeoning as he sat down to write The Eustace Diamonds. Wilkie Collins’s The Moonstone had just been published to huge success, giving birth to the detective novel genre. Trollope would have none of it, and kept no secrets from his readers. That The Eustace Diamonds maintains a sense of drama and intrigue in spite of Trollope’s forthright narration is a testament to his skill as a storyteller. There are also signs of Trollope plotting a future course for his Palliser series, of which The Eustace Diamonds is the third. Political life is not absent, but it is wholly subservient to the events that swirl around Lizzie and her companions. As the novel closes, Trollope winks at his readers, informing us that we haven’t seen the last of Lizzie Eustace yet. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals of high chemical and mechanical perfection are required for research in electronic devices. The purpose of the research reported here was to produce diamonds for use in the fabrication of semiconducting devices. This was one portion of a laboratory-wide program investigating the utilization of diamond as a high temperature semiconductor. Diamond synthesis is explained in terms of crystallization from a super-saturated liquid. The major driving force is thermodynamic. The primary condition for synthesis is a stable diamond-liquid equilibrium in which the liquid is composed of carbon and certain metal solvents. Thermodynamic expressions are developed for describing the pertinent portions of the nickel-, cobalt-, manganese-, and iron-carbon binary systems. Temperature-composition diagrams at high pressures are drawn to show stability relationships and the allowed limits for synthesis. The theoretical model is verified by an extensive ultrah-high pressure-temperature experimental investigation. Theoretical and empirical results are employed in predicting conditions for producing high quality single crystals. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eustace Diamonds revolves around Lizzie Greystock, a fortune-hunter who ensnares the sickly, dissipated Sir Florian Eustace and is soon left a very wealthy widow and mother. While clever and beautiful, Lizzie has several character flaws; the greatest of these is an almost pathological delight in lying, even when it cannot benefit her. Before he dies, the disillusioned Sir Florian discovers all this, but does not think to change the generous terms of his will. The diamonds of the title are a necklace, a family heirloom that Sir Florian gave to Lizzie to wear. Though they belong to her husband's estate (and thus eventually will be the property of her son), Lizzie refuses to relinquish them. She lies about the terms under which they were given to her, leaving their ownership unclear. The indignant Eustace family lawyer, Mr. Camperdown, strives to retrieve the necklace, putting the Eustaces in an awkward position. On the one hand, the diamonds are valuable and Lizzie may not have a legal claim to them, but on the other, they do not want to antagonize the mother of the heir to the family estate.

Book excerpt: Forget crying into your beer. When calamity strikes there's a perfect cocktail to ease your woes. During their bartending years, Leanne Shear and Tracey Toomey were often witness to all kinds of personal crises. And while others may take refuge with their therapist or on the racquetball court, Leanne and Tracey concluded that the quickest way to beat the blues is with a delicious drink (or two). That hot guy from last week still hasn't called? Try a Pomegranate Martini—bold, tasty, but not so lethal that you'll be tempted to drunk dial him. Gain a few pounds? Indulge in a (nearly) guiltless Sugar-Free Mojito. Credit card bill contains a few nasty surprises? A decadent Bourbon Bee Sting will leave you feeling like a million dollars. As dependable as a good friend and guaranteed not to utter a single "I told you so," Cocktail Therapy proves that when life hands you lemons, the best thing to do is make a rum-soaked Tropical Lemonade.

Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Carbon: Organometallic Chemistry is a specialist's selection of certain chapters in Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry comprising five volumes. This book contains corrections and added prefatory material and individual indices. This volume deals with carbon (Chapter 13) and describes organic chemistry of the metallic elements (Chapter 14). Carbon is unique in its ability to form strong chemical bonds with itself or other elements. Graphite and diamonds are some elementary forms of carbon. Chapter 14 discusses the basis for a qualitative, comparative description of the organic chemistry of metals and any inorganic chemistry found common in them. The book uses the covalent model in describing both bondings made in most organometallic compounds and inorganic derivatives. The text also discusses the atoms in molecules, particularly in a molecular ion, as having both ligands X and a central atom M. A table then shows the classification of some common ligands, grouping them according to the number of valence electrons that make up their bonding. The text then explains the general trends in the chemistry of the main group elements of the Periodic Table that contain ns and np orbitals in their valence shells. The book also discusses some atomic properties, their consequences, and the occurrence of unpaired electrons in organo transition metal complexes. This book will be valuable for students and professors dealing with general chemistry, gemologists, molecular scientists, and researchers.

On our way, we meet Michelangelo, Henri Toulouse Lautrec, and Goddess Saraswati to guide us through the story. A rich art dealer, Adwait narrates these stories to a reporter Karuna. Book excerpt: "Live to Death" The idea of this book title was quite spontaneous as I find it difficult to find that perfect anything. However, the title does makes sense with my beliefs and a lot of what lies in this book. The idea is to simply live life to the fullest, from the beginning to the end, to live life to the death of it, and to truly live, not only survive. To find meaning, and purpose is my dream. To give my mind to people, just like me. Main Themes - To find love for all stages of life, and events in life, even when they are not the brightest. To live life to the fullest, from the beginning to the end. Relation - It's life. We all live it. No matter your age, direction, class, beliefs, you are living, so it's applicable to all those that are alive, have existed, or will exist. The Main Plot/Point - To hopefully inspire a positive light, even in dark times, there is always beauty. Main Question - There are an infinite amount of questions you could ask yourself from reading this. I suppose I would hope for you to ask yourself questions about yourself from reading this. What is my life? Am I living? Am I alive? Have I died? In, "Live to Death" lies the poetry that I've written in the past 3 years of my life. All of this poetry comes from the reality that I've experienced, rather it be through my very own eyes, or in my mind. This is my reality. I hope you can find yourself falling into my reality and seeing through my eyes and into my mind.
