Book excerpt: On November 6 and 7, 1987, lipid and lipoprotein researchers from all over Europe convened in Munich on the occasion of the second European Workshop on Lipid Metabolism (EWLM). This informal gathering was devoted to two main topics, and recent research results were presented and discussed during a poster session. Recent developments in the physiology and pathophysiology of lipoprotein sub fractions were discussed on the first day of the meeting. In recent years, new analytical tools have been created for analyzing lipoprotein subfractions, particularly the apolipoprotein component. With the, introduction of immunological and elec trophoretic methods it has become clear that the heterogeneity of the plasma lipopro tein system is even greater than had been assumed only a decade or so ago. Despite this, it is apparent from the contributions to this volume that new methods for differentiating lipoprotein subfractions will increase our understanding of lipoprotein metabolism, especially of the triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and the high density lipoproteins. The complex functions of the various plasma apolipoproteins and their association with the lipoprotein lipid in single or complex lipoprotein particles give rise to a complex and dynamic metabolic system that changes constantly during the day. While it has for some time been possible to delineate fairly accurately the atherogenic potential of low-density lipoproteins, which are comparatively simple lipoprotein particles, the new methods of lipoprotein subfraction analysis will be needed to select and differentiate amongst the potentially atherogenic triglyceride rich particles, especially the chylomicron and very low density lipoprotein remnants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In mammalian blood plasma there exist some 6 major lipoprotein classes. Under physiological conditions lipoproteins are certainly beneficial as they transport nutrients and steroids to numerous organs for further metabolism. On the other hand, under pathophysiological conditions most lipoprotein classes promote atherogenesis except of HDL that are considered to be anti-atherogenic. Lipoprotein research is a wide field comprising basic science, analytical methods and clinical investigations. Thus this issue does not raise the claim to give a comprehensive picture of the current knowledge, but rather focuses on specific questions related to animal models in lipoprotein research as well as features of the most atherogenic lipoprotein, Lp(a).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evidence that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for human development and most helpful to achieve good health throughout life is clearly documented by Dr. Joyce Nettleton in her new book Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Health. Omega 3 fatty acids are produced by the plants of the land and sea. The tissues of the body require the omega-3 fatty acids for their proper functioning just as they also need the omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is probable in man's evolutionary development that there has always been the proper balance between these two groups of essential fatty acids, but in the modern era with the provision of inexpensive vegetable oils it is possible that the pendulum for increased dietary omega-6 fatty acids in the form of linoleic acid has swung too far and the intake ofomega-3 fatty acids has actualIy declined. In particular, the 22 carbon omega 3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid, which has six double bonds, is important in the membranes of brain cells, heart muscle cells, the rods and cones of the retina and spermatozoa. Docosahexaenoic acid is found only in foods such as fish and other sea life, having been synthesized by the phytoplankton of the waters. An outright deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids has led to a number of distur bances in animals and human infants such as impaired vision, abnormalities of the electroretinogram, of the eye and various behavioral aberrations.

Book excerpt: Studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet and molecular studies included in this volume indicate that human beings evolved on a diet that was balanced in the essential fatty acids (EFA). In fact, the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA was 1/1 whereas present day diets in both developed and developing countries have a much higher ratio, between 5/1 and 50/1. Additional studies show that a high ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA is detrimental to health and may lead to the development of chronic diseases. Improving the dietary ratio by decreasing the omega-6 fatty acids and increasing the omega-3 fatty acids is essential for brain function and for the management of cardiovascular disease, arthritis and cancer. A ratio of 4/1 or less leads to lower dosage and to the reduction of adverse effects of drugs. This volume should be of interest to a large and varied audience of researchers in academia, industry, and government; cardiologists, geneticists, immunologists, neuroscientists, and cancer specialists; as well as nutritionists, dietitians, food scientists, agriculturists, economists and regulators.
