Book excerpt: Lion, Tiger, and Bear, oh my! In Locust Grove, Georgia, an American black bear named Baloo, a lion named Leo, and a Bengal tiger named Shere Kahn all live happily together. The three animals were rescued over twelve years ago and brought to live at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary. The trainers there tried to separate the trio for fear that fights would break out. The animals did start acting out—but only until they were reunited in the same pen. This true story of unlikely friendship is filled with photographs supplied directly from Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the underbelly of foreign aid - one country's assistance to another - from three levels, some of which are not totally on the level. You've got your international policy level, your between-the clouds-and ground practice level, and your personal emotional level. Policy may appear unreal. It is. Practice may appear rather confused. It is. Individual emotions are, well, a complicating factor. The story might appear anthropological. Even anthropomorphic [meaning animals with human traits], or possibly atavistic [you might say giving humans beastly traits]. So be it. Metaphors are metaphors and facts are facts. And this book is based on more of the latter than the former. The locations are where they are, but not always clearly specified. The humor is rife. Don't let it detract from the facts. The sadness is lamentable but integral. On all levels. Beasties aside, this is non-fiction, for the most part. The very most part. These things happened, happen for the most part. They are happening still with no sign of declension, grammatically or actually. The premise of this book is: Things ain't always what they seem. The conclusion is: Things ain't always what they seem. So? Like the author, keep on looking.

Book excerpt: Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals is a comprehensive resource that covers the pathology of wildlife and zoo species, including a wide scope of animals, disease types and geographic regions. It is the definitive book for students, biologists, scientists, physicians, veterinary clinicians and pathologists working with non-domestic species in a variety of settings. General chapters include information on performing necropsies, proper techniques to meet the specialized needs of forensic cases, laboratory diagnostics, and an introduction into basic principles of comparative clinical pathology. The taxon-based chapters provide information about disease in related groups of animals and include descriptions of gross and histologic lesions, pathogenesis and diagnostics. For each group of animals, notable, unique gross and microscopic anatomical features are provided to further assist the reader in deciding whether differences from the domestic animal paradigm are "normal." Additional online content, which includes text, images, and whole scanned glass slides of selected conditions, expands the published material resulting in a comprehensive approach to the topic. 2019 PROSE Awards - Winner: Category: Textbook/Biological and Life Sciences: Association of American Publishers Presents a single resource for performing necropsies on a variety of taxa, including terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates Describes notable, unique gross and microscopic anatomical variations among species/taxa to assist in understanding normal features, in particular those that can be mistaken as being abnormal Provides consistent organization of chapters with descriptions of unique anatomic features, common non-infectious and infectious diseases following brief overviews of the taxonomic group Contains full-color, high quality illustrations of diseases Links to a large online library of scanned slides related to topics in the book that illustrate important histologic findings

Book excerpt: All about Ferrets and Rats : A Complete History of Ferrets, Rats, and Rat Extermination from Personal Experiences and Study. Also a Practical Hand-Book on the Ferret. Our dictionaries say that "ferret" as a verb active means to search out carefully. This is certainly an important function of the animal, but, as it belongs to the Musteline or flesh-eating weasel family, it has also inherited these animals' boldness and savageness, though tempered and exercised in a very useful direction, i. e., of killing off the most bothersome and numerous of our vermin for us. It is rather a well-known family,[Pg 8] the one to which the ferret belongs, including such animals as the sable, which furnishes the highly-prized fur, the skunk, with its not as greatly valued perfume, the ermine, the color of which is likened to the driven snow and whose dress forms the badge of royalty, the weasel, from which artists obtain their finest brushes, the marten, the badger, and the otter. The shape of these animals, the characteristics being strongly marked in the ferret, is long, slender, and serpentine (snake-like and winding), their teeth are very sharp, the muzzle and legs short. Their average food is rats, rabbits, and birds. Members of this class are found in all climates and parts of the earth. It is necessary to state, primarily, that there is no such thing as a wild ferret; it is domesticated in the same degree as a cat or a dog. The wild animal from which the ferret is bred is the weasel, just as the dog is originally of wolf extraction, and the cat of the same class as the tiger or lion. The ferret is also interbred with the different species of the musteline tribe, such as the mink, marten, polecat, and fitch. These are nevertheless all weasels in the same way that terriers, black and tans, Newfoundlands, and poodles all belong to the family of dogs. The ferret's origin has been traced by some to Spain, by others again to the northwestern part of Africa, and by still different writers as far away from us as Egypt, but it was first used authentically for ratting and rabbiting in Great Britain, where it is most highly prized, its merits understood, and where almost every one is as familiar with it as he is with the nature of his house cat. The public here in America is yet but indifferently acquainted with the ferret. At an exhibition of ferrets made by the writer at Madison Square Garden there was about one out of every fifteen persons that knew the name of the animal at all, and the ferrets were alternately designated as skunks, weasels, guinea-pigs, raccoons, monkeys, woodchucks, kittens, puppies, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, rats (an animal for which they are commonly mistaken), hares, martens, otters, small kangaroos, muskrats, beavers, seals, and, ridiculous as it may seem, small bears. The American race of ferrets has been bred to a high degree of intelligence, as the proper medium of wildness in the hunt and docility to its keeper has been obtained principally through the efforts of the present writer. This, however, has only been brought about after a great deal of close study and experiment in cross breeding, until now the American animal is greatly preferable to its more sluggish and vicious English brother.

Book excerpt: Researchers are still identifying micro-organisms that cause new diseases in humans. A basic factor in the emergence of these diseases is the role played by animals, which act as a reservoir for certain viruses. In favourable conditions, such viruses can cross the species barrier and infect humans. The book takes a close look at two families of virus: orthomyxoviridae and paramyxoviridae, which have infected many species of vertebrates and are responsible for zoonosis. The two main parts of the book describe how the viruses operate, how they spread and the risk factors for humans. In addition to a specific and detailed study of these two micro-organisms, the book highlights the fascinating history of such diseases, their emergence, development and disappearance. They have occurred throughout human history, underscoring the role of the environment and the way it changes, often as a result of human intervention. Sponsored by the Mérieux Foundation and written by leading international specialists, this book provides first-class information about these new viruses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging personal account of one of America's most contested wildlife conservation campaigns has as its central character the black-footed ferret. Once feared extinct, and still one of North America's rarest mammals, the black-footed ferret exemplifies the ecological, social, and political challenges of conservation in the West, including the risks involved with intensive captive breeding and reintroduction to natural habitat. David Jachowski draws on more than a decade of experience working to save the ferret. His unique perspective and informative anecdotes reveal the scientific and human aspects of conservation as well as the immense dedication required to protect a species on the edge of extinction. By telling one story of conservation biology in practiceÑits routine work, triumphs, challenges, and inevitable conflictsÑthis book gives readers a greater understanding of the conservation ethic that emerged on the Great Plains as part of one of the most remarkable recovery efforts in the history of the Endangered Species Act.
